Thank you so much for sharing it with us...just beautiful. The button drawer was great, but the thing that really got me was the scissors. So worn, and beautiful, it made me wonder just how many things were made with them, and the hundreds of times your grandmother's loving hands held them.

What a treasure! Loved seeing all the opened drawers. You are one lucky lady to have this.

ndgirl 03-04-2011 11:06 AM

Precious memories!!

grandmaquilts 03-04-2011 11:09 AM

That is really something to treasure. You have a bit of your grandparents and vintage sewing material. I have several old items that I purchased at various antique shows and stores, but not the emotional attachment that you have. Plus, I spent a small fortune buying these things. I love them though

Crafty Chick 03-04-2011 11:32 AM

What a wonderful gift you have been blessed with-sewing items to treasure and your memories too!

I have a table of about the same vintage. The top lifts back and it has spaces with the old sock thread. and a gold painted insert with dished out spots for snaps, buttons, , etc. Then two drawers with lots of goodies. My Mom had it and when she passed away I got it. I have added some items but not taken any thing out of it at all. The finish is crackled and I have been trying to decide what to do about it. It has inlaid veneer on it. Not sure how thick it is. Jan

What a treasure, lucky you! Think of all the memoires you have.

jbronston 03-04-2011 08:08 PM

What a nice sewing box. As we complain about our messy sewing rooms, think about how much a woman accomplished with so little just a couple of generations ago. And she KNEW where her scissors were every time she needed them!

What a chest of treasures with so many golden memories.

1900's sounds like that was sooo long ago. Yikes! lovely spool box though.

Maurene 03-05-2011 09:33 AM

It looks like something your grandfather might have made just for her. Do you know the history of it? My granddaddy madd all sorts of things like that for my grandmother including a drop-leaf sewing table for her to make my father's layette on. His sister inherited it and then it came to me as the only one interested in sewing - I made my 2 sons' layettes and some quilts using it - then one of the sons 'adopted' it - I actually hope to get it back at some point when I have a bigger place - nobody's using it for sewing or quilting, and that is it's destiny!!

Cherish your moms treasures.

kt53sews 03-06-2011 08:02 PM

You might want to take out the scissors and place a little sewing machine oil on the screws and such to help slow down on the rusting going on. Don't want it to spread.

Thanks for reminding me, kt53sews - I had thought about that (it has been in storage for three years) but had forgotten to do so!!

I bought a small sewing table at an auction several years ago. It came from England and it was just like someone had left it with thread, needles, pins, emery, buttons and other odds and ends in it. A pincushion in the lid. I couldn't discard anything. I use it to set my VCR on. My daughter has put it on her list of things she wants.

auntiehenno 03-09-2011 11:49 PM
