Adding to a quilt to enlarge
1 Attachment(s)
Here are a couple of pictures (I hope) showing the added on section which is the length of the quilt by about 14 inches. You can see the binding of the original sized quilt about 14 inches up.

Nice job! love it!
Beautiful quilt and I really like the job you did on it.
Nice soft colors. Calla
Beautiful. Would not be able to tell if you didn't tell us. It looks like you planned it that way. You are very creative.
I'm unclear why the binding was left on. Was it easier leaving it on? How did you attach the new layers?
I attached the new part by laying it under the original quilt and stitching the top and batting (of the new part) in the ditch of the original binding. Then folded a hem in the backing and finished that by hand. Since it has been several years ago that I did this I can't remember just exacty what I did. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.
To answer Balloonatic's question...I saw no reason to take the original binding off...this just seemed the easiest way to add the new part. Besides that it gives it a nice look as well as giving me something to grab on to when I make the bed! (Actually, since retiring my DH makes the bed!!!) |
thanks for showing that an added on quilt can look very natural
Very creative! One would never know it was added to. Nice job. tfs
I had to do the same thing to one of mine a while back. You quilt turned out beautiful.
So beautiful, and very nice.
Wonderful job! Could barely find it. Pretty genius!!!
You did an excellent job of making that bigger. No one would know if you didn't tell them. Perfect!
Now I can add to few quilts that were used on smaller beds that I no longer have.If I can add to them and match fabric I can use them on my queen size bed..Something so easy but yet never thought of ,thanks .....
Thank you for the pictures. You did a great job.
Would never have known it if you hadn't said something. Great job!
Just Beautiful! Love how the feathers look with the wider spine! Great job!
Wonderful work!!
Great solution! Have always wondered if that could be done and I think you did a great job. Thanks for sharing.
You ARE very clever. It looks beautiful and very impressive indeed. Thanks for sharing.
That is so impressive. I never would have thought of it, but will remember it in case I have a need in the future.
Would you mind posting a picture of the back though? I'm having a hard time understanding how it would look on the back. Thanks and nice work! |
Yours is a beautiful quilt and I would never have guessed that you made it larger. If I ever need to enlarge, I will try you make it as seamless as yours. Thanks for sharing.
Great choice on the addition.

Nilla, this is a picture of the back. The beige is the original backing and the blue is the backing on the extension. If I remember correctly I was thinking I had blind stitched the new backing by hand but I just went and looked again and it was stitched with the same seam as the addition was stitched on with. I just remember it went really well and wasn't that difficult. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out if you add to a quilt.

Wow, I am thoroughly impressed. That's a new idea for me. I have a dresden plate quilt that I love....except for the borders. I tried to jazz it up when I should have stayed with a simple design. I basted it (I didn't have a long arm at the time), then decided I was not going to be happy with the border, so I just folded it up and put it away. I might be able to just unbaste the border and a bit of the inner fabric, then add on a new simpler border.
I don't have any quilt right now that I would need to use your idea on, but with the way I change my mind, it will eventually happen I'm sure. I'm a visual person so thanks for showing pictures! |
Wow. Beautiful job and beautiful quilt. What a neat idea to leave binding. Makes it look like another type of "prairie point"
It works.... Great job
It turned out beautifully... what a way to "save" and use an already pretty quilt.
love your quilt and the add on is perfect

Very clever...great looking quilt!
You did a great job.
Fascinating, but I want to ask about the fabric. Did you happen to have a bunch left over from the original quilt?
