How big are the blocks and how many do you have to do. They are really pretty

there are 26 blocks. from the book they are 7", but some have enlarged them so that the blocks are bigger.

QuiltswithConvicts 03-27-2011 08:18 PM

My blocks are 7" square & there will be a total of 36. These 16 form the center unit. They will have a very narrow inner border around them. Then there are 20 more that surround them with another border then a bigger appliques border. The quilt finishes at about 60" square.

We are doing this as a cyber sew. I am hosting it, so I have done the center blocks.

The official start date is June 5, but a few of us have JTG (Jumped the Gun). Anyone is welcome to join us. My signature has the link.

Thanks for looking & for all the compliments.

Here is mine, hand needleturned, but 10 in square, so my quilt will end up about 84in square

Again, I made my middle first, then basted it to the black

That's only because I made 8 blocks at this sitting. I tend to work in an assembly-line fashion. Do the same thing for all the blocks at one time. Like I have all the fusible drawn & cut out for all 36 blocks. I did fabric selection for all 16 center blocks at the same time.

Now I am drawing the design on the outer 20 blocks. I had put that off until I got my light box.

The next thing I'm doing is sewing the 16 blocks together into the center unit & then I have to decide what I'm going to do about that little inner border. Haven't given it any thought as I wanted to see what the blocks would look lke before making any deciesions.

I like the way you do your applique first Lesley before attaching to the background

QuiltnNan 03-28-2011 07:40 AM

nice work.

The other way would be to sew on the coloured background first, then cut away the black, then do the central part - more than one way of skinning the proverbial cat

Butterflyspain 03-28-2011 08:14 AM

I am doing it the other way, and its working well, so will stick to what I know (g)

connie d 03-28-2011 06:35 PM

I love it.

I have a light box and can completely understand how helpful it will be to you in this project.

You ladies are doing a fabulous job on these blocks, they are all soooooooo beautiful!

sandpat 04-02-2011 06:18 AM

Both are beautiful! I think I may try your method on this one Lesley...that is...when I get there!

JudyG 04-15-2011 04:31 PM

I really like your background on this one Elle (not the black, the bit in the middle), good choice

Butterflyspain 04-16-2011 01:40 AM

Thanks Lesley, doesn´t seem to pop as much as the others, but I like it.

sandpat 04-16-2011 05:13 AM

I think it will be nice to have a place for your eyes to rest occasionally :D:

Ok I’m so excited to post the photos of my first block. I love it! It’s hard to tell but my background fabric is dark brown. And I’m using cranberry colored embroidery floss. I found the deep “v” the most challenging part. I also did my embroidery without a hoop because I was afraid of hurting the needle turn and I had to be very careful not to pull too much. Well let me know what you all think.

Lisa, I think your block is beautiful. I love the polka dots on the center background fabric. And your fussycutting of the center leaves is very, very nice.

Butterflyspain 04-16-2011 08:59 AM

Great minds think alike, Lesley. Now if I could just get my fingers to do the fantastic work that yours do, I'd be in good shape.

Jingle 04-16-2011 03:13 PM

All are very pretty, you all have a good eye for color.

sandpat 04-16-2011 04:30 PM

Lisa, I love your block! The polka dots on the lily pad make it look like you've covered it with some type of lace or crochet....really cool effect! It looks fantastic and I can't wait to see some of your other blocks coming together. I think your color combo will be so different and great looking!

Butterflyspain 04-16-2011 11:33 PM

What Patti said, although I have already said how great it is, but Patti nailed it.
She is my identical twin sister ya no (grin)
