That is absolutely beautiful. I love it. I have the book, but haven't done anything with it. I guess because I don't care too much for black backgrounds. But yours is gorgeous.

jillnjo 10-01-2012 01:51 PM

I'm wondering, too, what method you decided to use for the applique? I can't tell you how beautiful those blocks are! I so want to do applique, but I have some arthritis in my left thumb and it hinders me, especially when I feel clumsy at it anyway. I keep telling myself that if I felt comfortable with a method, I would do fine with a little pain!

Thanks everyone for your kind words :o
I had a quick look for the video and of course I couldn't find it  What I do is trace the design on to freezer paper, then iron my traced copy to another piece of freezer paper so that I have 2 layers. I then cut out all my pieces and iron them on to the wrong side of my fabric ( I use batiks so there is not really a wrong side LOL). I then cut out my pieces leaving around 1/4" all round (usually a little smaller), then using a small paint brush dipped in a starch and water solution, I put the starch on my seam allowance, with a mini iron I iron my seam allowance down using the freezer paper as my guide. As the fabric is wet, it goes aound curves really well, I clip my inside curves so they sit better. I then peel off my freezer paper and stitch down using silk thread.
I have to go out today, but I will have another look for that video when I get back.

Gorgeous! Is it hard to applique on the black background, opposed to white ?

Quilter 65 10-01-2012 07:44 PM

Your workmanship is exquisite. Love the pattern, the colors, all of it. I would still be on the first block. Can't wait to see the finished project. Beautiful, beautiful.

I've never appliqued on white so I don't know LOL. I used the Clover coloured tracing paper to put the design on the black fabric and then applique my pieces down. Is white easier?

piepatch 10-02-2012 01:55 AM

TrenbeathRanch 10-02-2012 04:38 AM

Beautiful work! My compliments on your color selection and skills. Turned edge applique is time consuming, and to do it well requires patience and conviction...you are executing the technique flawlessly. Well done!

callen 10-02-2012 04:43 AM

WOW, they are absolutely stunning. If the rest you have to do are as good as these, you are going to have one very beautiful quilt !! What a feast for the eyes.

patsynel 10-02-2012 04:55 AM

Your blocks are spectacular.

ccthomas 10-02-2012 04:57 AM

Thanks for sharing your tips and beautiful appliqued quilt blocks. I was so discouraged when my first attempt at applique was not a good experience. Left hand stitching to a right-hand instruction did not work and I just immediately stopped in frustration. You are an inspiration to find a better approach that will work for me.

MamaHen 10-02-2012 05:05 AM

There aren't enough beautiful words to describe your blocks. Just awsome!

Cat18 10-02-2012 05:12 AM
