I put one of my jelly roll quilts on the machine last night and started quilting it. Because I am thinking of doing cross-hatching on another quilt I decided to practice on a top that is simple first. I am just using a small normal rotary ruler to quide the long arm but I will get one that is made for long arming.
I have a diamond cross-hatch stencil that I will probably use on the other quilt. It's kind of fun to do. |
looks like you're really getting the hang of it!
Pam that is looking great! I love the cross hatched look and the little flower motif in the 4Ps is a lovely touch.
Very Nice.. I like it!
Pam, it is looking really good.
That's really pretty Pam. I like the crosses on the whites and flowers on the 4 patches.
Thank you. I thought it went with the lattice look of the jelly rolls with the flowers on the lattice.
The first row isn't as good, of course, until I can more accurate guage with my eye where to put the guide. The quilt top I am working on now that is a vintage look is where I want the cross hatch in the center applique block. That is a very classic design for applique and I want to stay with the vintage look. |
Looks great.
oh ! cross hatching is my favorite!!! you are doing a lovely job!
Looking great!
It's looking great Pam. I'm envious of long arm quilter's, but I'll do what I can with my Viking Designer I USB until I can afford a long arm......maybe about 2020 if I save my pennies.
Thanks all. I know it's not the greatest and after this one is done I will get some practice fabric on the frame and practice, practice, practice.
I want to get some of my "better" quilts done and I'm not going to touch them myself until I am comfortable with it. |
Looks like your getting quite good at the ruler work. You may want to look into DeLoa's curved rulers. I understand they are very good for curved crosshatching. My machine doesn't have the correct foot for ruler work, so I haven't tried them. I need to go buy that foot.
Lookin great!!!
Pam what is that quilt pattern? I love it...I love simple patterns that show off the fabrics.
Margie |
That cross hatching looks fantastic! I think you are a natural!
This is my first time trying ruler work. Need to learn how to better judge the distance from the ruler for the foot.
The pattern is from the book Jelly Roll Quilts. I used a Nature's Chorus jelly roll and one of Moda Sugar. Very simple to sew two strips together, nest them with another two strips, then cut into 2 1/2" sections and sew them into the 4-patch blocks. Then it's just strips between them and I used all of the green strips for the sashing blocks. It is a pretty and simple pattern. I think it only took 3 days to make since there is little cutting to be done. |
Looking good. Love your pattern and colors.
Your work looks very nice. I haven't used my long arm yet on a quilt, so this might sound like a stupid question. Do you have to tie off each time you go to a new block to do your cross hatch?
No, I'm not tying off. When I have to I go across stitch in the ditch at the green squares, which is every other one I think.
I am probably not the best person to ask, I've never done this before and that could be totally wrong to do. |
love the quilt and your quilting!
Very nice quilt and great job on the quilting!
Ooo, that looks GREAT!!
How did you get into the middle of your four patch to do your flower? I studied your photo but couldn't see how you did it. Did you come across a middle seam......Beautiful work...I am going to be brave and try this.
I come in at one of the corners, whichever one I come to when doing the cross hatch.
I come in at the corner, curve to the middle and the curve back out to the next corner, curve back to the middle, then to the third corner, back to the middle, then back to the corner that I came in on and back out of the square. It's basically 4 half circles inside the square then out again. |
Thanks for sharing. It is turning out lovely.
Glad you let us know the fabric. I have been looking at all the Moda line and can't make up my mind. |

Pam, beautiful quilt, love the colors. I think you are doing fantastic on the quilting, very crisp looking! :D
Very nice job on th quilting. That is a very pretty quilt
Your quilting looks great!!
Beautiful quilt |
You have made a rather ordinary quilt look stunning. Wonderful work.
beautiful quilt and great quilting. It makes me think of spring and I am very ready for it.
Pam, that looks wonderful! I think you are certainly getting the "hang" of that ruler. I don't have a LA or even know much about them, but it appears that you will be doing your "good" quilts in no time at all.
You are really getting close to being professional Pam. It looks professional! You do good work. I love to look at your quilts. I was wondering the same thing about did you have to break your thread each time. You did very good. See, we couldn't even tell, and especially having to use a regular ruler. Good Job!
very nice
That is going to be gorgeous!!
Practice is helping and I think each row is getting better. I ordered a cross hatching ruler for long arm, the extension table for the machine, and other items. Maybe with the right tools I can do a better job.
Put cross hatch in the search above and couldn't find anything. Can you explain how you do that....It is so neat looking.
Here's a video at Long Arm University.
http://www.longarmuniversity.com/Boo...g_tutorial.htm I am just using a regular ruler (I ordered that one) and using the ruler to make straight lines from corner to corner, from corner to seam, corner to corner, etc. Do it one way then come back and do it the other way. Just have to remember to place the ruler 1/4" away from the corner that you want to hit because of the width of the foot. |
