I put one of my jelly roll quilts on the machine last night and started quilting it. Because I am thinking of doing cross-hatching on another quilt I decided to practice on a top that is simple first. I am just using a small normal rotary ruler to quide the long arm but I will get one that is made for long arming.

I have a diamond cross-hatch stencil that I will probably use on the other quilt. It's kind of fun to do.

kathy 03-03-2010 07:26 AM

looks like you're really getting the hang of it!

k3n 03-03-2010 07:26 AM

Pam that is looking great! I love the cross hatched look and the little flower motif in the 4Ps is a lovely touch.

justme 03-03-2010 07:26 AM

Very Nice.. I like it!

shaverg 03-03-2010 07:36 AM

Pam, it is looking really good.

bj 03-03-2010 07:38 AM

That's really pretty Pam. I like the crosses on the whites and flowers on the 4 patches.

pittsburgpam 03-03-2010 07:39 AM

Thank you. I thought it went with the lattice look of the jelly rolls with the flowers on the lattice.

The first row isn't as good, of course, until I can more accurate guage with my eye where to put the guide. The quilt top I am working on now that is a vintage look is where I want the cross hatch in the center applique block. That is a very classic design for applique and I want to stay with the vintage look.

LoisN 03-03-2010 07:40 AM

Looks great.

alaskasunshine 03-03-2010 07:59 AM

oh ! cross hatching is my favorite!!! you are doing a lovely job!

katier825 03-03-2010 09:50 AM

Looking great!

Sheila Elaine 03-03-2010 10:02 AM

It's looking great Pam. I'm envious of long arm quilter's, but I'll do what I can with my Viking Designer I USB until I can afford a long arm......maybe about 2020 if I save my pennies.

pittsburgpam 03-03-2010 10:37 AM

Thanks all. I know it's not the greatest and after this one is done I will get some practice fabric on the frame and practice, practice, practice.

I want to get some of my "better" quilts done and I'm not going to touch them myself until I am comfortable with it.

mytwopals 03-03-2010 12:04 PM

Looks like your getting quite good at the ruler work. You may want to look into DeLoa's curved rulers. I understand they are very good for curved crosshatching. My machine doesn't have the correct foot for ruler work, so I haven't tried them. I need to go buy that foot.

Jim's Gem 03-03-2010 12:17 PM

Lookin great!!!

Margie 03-03-2010 12:26 PM

Pam what is that quilt pattern? I love it...I love simple patterns that show off the fabrics.

That cross hatching looks fantastic! I think you are a natural!

pittsburgpam 03-03-2010 01:02 PM

This is my first time trying ruler work. Need to learn how to better judge the distance from the ruler for the foot.

The pattern is from the book Jelly Roll Quilts. I used a Nature's Chorus jelly roll and one of Moda Sugar. Very simple to sew two strips together, nest them with another two strips, then cut into 2 1/2" sections and sew them into the 4-patch blocks. Then it's just strips between them and I used all of the green strips for the sashing blocks.

It is a pretty and simple pattern. I think it only took 3 days to make since there is little cutting to be done.

STEMSAM 03-03-2010 01:36 PM

Looking good. Love your pattern and colors.

Rexene 03-03-2010 01:43 PM

Your work looks very nice. I haven't used my long arm yet on a quilt, so this might sound like a stupid question. Do you have to tie off each time you go to a new block to do your cross hatch?

pittsburgpam 03-03-2010 02:07 PM

No, I'm not tying off. When I have to I go across stitch in the ditch at the green squares, which is every other one I think.

I am probably not the best person to ask, I've never done this before and that could be totally wrong to do.

blahel 03-03-2010 03:25 PM

love the quilt and your quilting!

dkabasketlady 03-03-2010 04:29 PM

Very nice quilt and great job on the quilting!

sewnsewer2 03-03-2010 04:36 PM

Ooo, that looks GREAT!!

MarjaMT 03-03-2010 04:39 PM

How did you get into the middle of your four patch to do your flower? I studied your photo but couldn't see how you did it. Did you come across a middle seam......Beautiful work...I am going to be brave and try this.

pittsburgpam 03-03-2010 04:58 PM

I come in at one of the corners, whichever one I come to when doing the cross hatch.

I come in at the corner, curve to the middle and the curve back out to the next corner, curve back to the middle, then to the third corner, back to the middle, then back to the corner that I came in on and back out of the square.

It's basically 4 half circles inside the square then out again.

wvdek 03-03-2010 04:59 PM

Thanks for sharing. It is turning out lovely.

Glad you let us know the fabric. I have been looking at all the Moda line and can't make up my mind.

Thank you for the info......You are good because I couldn't see that....Wondered about that and looked and just didn't see it.

Pam, beautiful quilt, love the colors. I think you are doing fantastic on the quilting, very crisp looking! :D

MamaBear61 03-04-2010 05:16 AM

Very nice job on th quilting. That is a very pretty quilt

Justquilting 03-04-2010 05:39 AM

Your quilting looks great!!

Beautiful quilt

mimee4 03-04-2010 06:18 AM

You have made a rather ordinary quilt look stunning. Wonderful work.

jacee kay 03-04-2010 06:26 AM

beautiful quilt and great quilting. It makes me think of spring and I am very ready for it.

sandpat 03-04-2010 06:26 AM

Pam, that looks wonderful! I think you are certainly getting the "hang" of that ruler. I don't have a LA or even know much about them, but it appears that you will be doing your "good" quilts in no time at all.

hpylady 03-04-2010 06:31 AM

You are really getting close to being professional Pam. It looks professional! You do good work. I love to look at your quilts. I was wondering the same thing about did you have to break your thread each time. You did very good. See, we couldn't even tell, and especially having to use a regular ruler. Good Job!

jewelps 03-04-2010 07:09 AM

very nice

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 03-04-2010 07:32 AM

That is going to be gorgeous!!

pittsburgpam 03-04-2010 07:35 AM

Practice is helping and I think each row is getting better. I ordered a cross hatching ruler for long arm, the extension table for the machine, and other items. Maybe with the right tools I can do a better job.

MarjaMT 03-04-2010 07:42 AM

Put cross hatch in the search above and couldn't find anything. Can you explain how you do that....It is so neat looking.

pittsburgpam 03-04-2010 07:52 AM

Here's a video at Long Arm University.
http://www.longarmuniversity.com/Boo...g_tutorial.htm

I am just using a regular ruler (I ordered that one) and using the ruler to make straight lines from corner to corner, from corner to seam, corner to corner, etc. Do it one way then come back and do it the other way.

Just have to remember to place the ruler 1/4" away from the corner that you want to hit because of the width of the foot.
