I'd go with a ligher color - not sure WHAT lighter color - but it would really make the blocks stand out if you sash them.....hmmmm???

Zephyr 04-20-2011 05:03 AM

I'd use some sort of rosey color as sashing. Really pretty blocks.

Phyl 04-20-2011 05:59 AM

Look at the way you have put the blocks together. There is WHITE between! It looks beautiful. You might do that, thin white between, and then border it with a black and white binding. Stunning!!! Why not show off the individul blocks as you have??????? You might even put four tassles on the corners to complete a victorian look.

Ziva 04-20-2011 06:44 AM

Green or gold or perhaps a lavendar.

Prayerquilter 04-20-2011 06:47 AM

Beautiful blocks, yes go with the sashing. It will bring out each block.

babyboomerquilter 04-20-2011 06:51 AM

I think green would make the fans pop.

The way you have them laid out, it looks to me as though the fans/blocks have not been assembled/completed yet. Am I correct?

Therefore, my suggestion would be to not decide til you are to that point. In the meantime, see how it comes together and audition the variables til you need to make the decision.

My first thought was to go for no sashing and let the fans float on the fabric.

Then as I read the comments, I started to think of the darkest rose or green to keep the sashing subtle. You want the fans to pop and not lose them with an overpowering sashing.

As has oft been said here ... remember it's your quilt and there's no rules! Do what pleases you!!

catray 04-20-2011 07:27 AM

I would line the blocks with a border of black and then continue with a color of your choice. The black will be seen because of the seams making that distance so that the color will not make such a large inpact. Yet the color will be seen as am accent to the entire project.

buckeyed 04-20-2011 07:30 AM

I really think the lighter green would really make those wonderful blocks stand out! I think anything brighter would detract from the blocks..Looks wonderful can't wait to see it done!

glorybound 04-20-2011 07:50 AM

A fine stripe, in a metalic fabric, on the diagonal as sashing, would showcase the fans. Hope you post it when it's done. Happy Quilting!

ts1stluv 04-20-2011 07:51 AM

 I love it ! I would without doubt frame each block that way it looks like each block is in a picture frame and I would say to try different colors till you found one that looks very nice with each block . Good luck from a newbie.

Definitely would use sashing to make them stand out individually.

Your blocks are beautiful.

Second this!

Pat75 04-20-2011 08:44 AM

I would use the darkest tone of green available in the green in your blocks and I would use a vibrant gold for corner stones.I would keep the width of the sashing at one in. finished widith .

Jammin' Jane 04-20-2011 08:53 AM

I think it would really look pretty with pink sashing and then black binding! Please show us when you're done!

quilter2theend 04-20-2011 09:29 AM

What about a deep cherry red between the blocks? Think it might make the fans really stand out. Just a thought.

spartan quilter 04-20-2011 09:34 AM

With so many votes for green and gold, have you thought about doing an attic window frame on these squares? It always makes the blocks pop. Just another option to play with.

macygma 04-20-2011 09:39 AM

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN ATTIC WINDOW?

I thought of pink also.

First color I saw was pink...I also liked the comment of using a narrow border of the fabric in the fans.

Here is a link to explain how to do it. Also, if you type in 'attic window' in the search, you will see how it makes blocks pop. Good luck. Lots of pictures.

chichimamma 04-20-2011 10:28 AM

I think pink-just the right shade-not too pale and not too bright, or maybe a periwinkle or lavendar.

nana20010 04-20-2011 10:38 AM

i think a very small green the green would add just enough with out taking away from the fans

macygma 04-20-2011 10:41 AM

thanks to all for ideas, thoughts, etc. I am off to look for: greens, fan tassels and something for the binding. Not quite sur eon thatg part, either

NanaKathy55 04-20-2011 11:01 AM

Very different..but beautiful...

I agree - what came to my mind other than a green would be a color from the Fairy Frost line ...

I think pink would look nice as the sashing.

penski 04-20-2011 12:33 PM

i think the color of green that is in your block would look good

or if that is pink in the block that might work

trolleystation 04-20-2011 01:23 PM

I like the idea of gold sashing.

gal288 04-20-2011 01:25 PM

Beautiful blocks, but if you don't sash it will appear as 1 large piece of fabric and the blocks will be lost.

Green that is in the fabric would look great!

donnacollierbess 04-20-2011 01:31 PM

Have you considered using a rose color baetween them. That would be my vote.

DBrooks 04-20-2011 01:39 PM

I agree. I'd go with green or gold sashing to set off the blocks. Your blocks are beautiful.

pawebdoctor 04-20-2011 02:34 PM

Sashing yes!
Both green and gold would definitely work... however, the look that each would give would be different... gold = elegance, green = bright.
Either way it will be beautiful!!!

koko 04-20-2011 03:06 PM

I think I would audition some different colors that are in the fans and see what looks best to you

MadQuilter 04-20-2011 03:08 PM

It calls "pink" in my head. Hard to say on the green because the other tones in the fans don't show up well in the pic.

rather B stitchin 04-20-2011 03:42 PM

have you tried lilac? from the photos every fan seems to have a touch of lilac. Try it out and see

aronel 04-20-2011 03:44 PM

I think gold in between would set off the blocks perfectly.

VernaL 04-20-2011 04:14 PM

You will probably think I am crazy, but I think black sashing might be good. The blocks are so beautiful and I wonder if a colored sashing might take away from the block centers. Just sewing the blocks together w/o sashing might look too plain. Again, sort of crazy. Come to think of it, I did a quilt with a black background that had your colors in the block centers and I used black sashing. I really liked it.
