Back From Romania-Look At This Sewing Machine!

2 Attachment(s)
I just returned from a 2 week photography trip vacation through the countryside of Romania. At one of our village stops, I saw this local woman sewing on her treadle sewing machine, making slippers from hand-spun wool yarn, woven into heavy cloth which her husband had boiled and beaten with heavy wooden posts to soften it up. I think she said the machine was a Pfaff, but not sure, my Romanian wasn't that good. Recognize it?

I am captured by her kind eyes and sweet smile!

QuiltnNan 10-26-2014 05:12 AM

it says pfaff on the side of the iron treadle works

#1piecemaker 10-26-2014 05:13 AM

That is what it says on the side of the machine. I didn't know they made Pfaff machines that long ago. Those shoes looking interesting. Did you get a pair?

No, I didn't, but thought about it. They were really heavy wool, and I go barefoot around the house year-round here, so thought I would never wear them.

Interesting! If my neighbors saw me outside with my treadle they would have me taken away! Sometimes I think the simple ways are the best was! Don't get me wrong...I love my electricity and computers but look how pleasant and relaxed she looks! And wouldn't those slippers be great to have??

LOVE the photo! Interesting that she has the thread feeding up to the machine from off the ground.

Beautiful! She expresses herself well in those gorgeous eyes and sweet smile. Note also she has the latest of tools. Those scissors have been about a long long time. And the knife??? Wonder how she would respond to all the tools we have available to us. Regardless, the slippers are wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

2manyhobbies 10-27-2014 03:14 AM

Those slippers look so cozy!

twinkie 10-27-2014 03:19 AM

It does say Pfaff on the side of the base but I haven't seen one. I believe the "work" table is something that was made as an addition to the machine. How sweet.

Sharoni 10-27-2014 03:34 AM

You would have pleased her and been a good ambassador if you had purchased a pair of her slippers, or anything else she had made, in exchange for taking her picture. Barter is a way of life there. Their colorful items reflect a love of life.

ranbro 10-27-2014 03:35 AM

Such a nice smile and I would love to have a pair of those slippers.

Oh I did buy a hat and a couple of other items from her, as did others in my small group. She was happy when we left! I also carry and give a small gift or money to everyone I photograph, depending upon the circumstances, and ALWAYS ask permission before photographing anyone directly.

Moonglow 10-27-2014 03:57 AM
