Trying to organize some fabric and this is what I have accomplished so far. I feel much better about it and now ready to tackle the mountains of flannel. I like the looks of it much better than the plastic tubs. Now to fill them up again

i am greenn with envy in the process of sorting stash but long way to go---GOOD JOB

Momma_K 01-14-2011 12:44 AM

Great job! I have loads of fabric in totes also, would love to get some shelving but has to wait until I move to a larger place! If you seen my apartment you'd say "Oh My Lord!!" Oh it's nice and cute but boy I'm moving my ownself out I ave so much stuff...most of it is fabrics and sewing machines, tables and so on!

KANDU 01-14-2011 02:21 AM

Those plastic bins are the pits...... ( and all my trunks too. ) Would do more if I could SEE without digging.... Am in the same boat as Momma K - no shelving yet - & Freecycle rarely has any ( - or they get snatched immediately! )

Chele 01-14-2011 02:35 AM

Looks so pretty! It's your own fabric shop!

Yeah, I check out FreeCycle too and rarely anything I need or can use. I have to wait for the first Saturday of the month and go to the GoodWill. Everything is half price, and thats if they have anything one can use. I do go for the bd sheets and flannels, use those for lite lining instead of batting...perfect for when you need just a little something. :-D

Dito on this. Have fun stash shopping :)

ConnieF 01-14-2011 03:13 AM

Looks good.
I have all my fqs in plastic totes but they fit perfect the way I fold them and I put in color familys and they are clear so I can see what I am getting into. I have a shelf 2 x's that size but have all my fabs folded and laying in flat and I use a ruler to get out what I want. Just slip above the one you want out.
I need to put more fab on shelfs and trims and ribbond etc in the totes so I can see what all I have....

I love this idea, but do you have to worry about the fabric fading. (from light)(let face it, some of my stash has been here for years).

Mitch's mom 01-14-2011 03:28 AM

I so wish I could do this but unfortunately my husband still smokes. I keep all my fabric and any project I'm working on in a plastic tote.
Your stash looks wonderful!

chickadeee55 01-14-2011 03:30 AM

Mitch's mom, love your quilt in the your pic.

plainpat 01-14-2011 04:07 AM

I like the pumpkins on your avatar.Did you sew or crochet them?

lovingmama 01-14-2011 06:31 AM

Great job organizing, like your stash!

paintedquilt 01-14-2011 07:31 AM

don't you just love it when things come together :D

oma66 01-14-2011 07:56 AM

Trena, that looks wonderful. Where did you get the cardboard (or whatever you used) to wrap the fabric around? You did a great job. Now I want to do it as it will afford me some space that I really need. Thanks for sharing.

annieshane 01-14-2011 08:00 AM

OMA 66 I went to the dollor tree and picked up the large poster boards for $1.00 each. Then cut them into 6 pieces, some people use larger cuts and only get 4-totally up to you. They are certainly not as nice as the plastic sign core boards, but so much cheaper. Works for me because I can put 3-5 yards of fabric on each piece.

annieshane 01-14-2011 08:03 AM

Great job, it is hard to believe all those tubs are in that shelving unit. If you are concerned about fading, can always put up fabric curtain on tension curtain rod that can be easily removed and reinstalled. I was amazed at the amount of fabrics that can be stored when wrapped and stood on end like yours. I am not sure the tubs are the best use of space. It is wonderful to be able to look at all the fabrics and see what works together. I found that once in the tubs, was out of sight and out of mind.

OKLAHOMA PEACH 01-14-2011 08:09 AM

Looks great, I'm packing to move, just loaded 2 32 gal tubs with fabric and books and have more to go. Have found plenty of tubs at walmart this month, for putting away Christmas. Things will be in storage for 3 to 6 mos, so everything I want to keep safe is going into tubs.

Stitchnripper 01-14-2011 08:15 AM

gorgeous setup. Enjoy.

wolph33 01-14-2011 08:20 AM

looks great now fill em up again

TrenaM 01-14-2011 09:38 AM

I go to Joanns and pick up their empty cardboard bolts that they throw away. Then cut them down into 4 pieces with kitchen scissors that I get at the Dollar Tree. Then I cut some of them down even more for the smaller pieces but not yet fat quarter size.

slvrseven 01-14-2011 09:42 AM

Great job.

Jim's Gem 01-14-2011 10:42 AM

Looks great!!!

The plastic tubs may not look so nice, but if you have a water leak, like I did on Wednesday, the plastic tubs would be a life saver!! Am I going to move all my fabrics into tubs again, no! But I would have been better off.

This is a really good idea!!

sewnsewer2 01-14-2011 06:22 PM

That looks so neat, wanna come and organize mine?

gellybean402 01-14-2011 06:32 PM

I am so envious! mine is stored in totes and a shelving unit with fabric file drawers. I don't have room for anything taller. Yours looks great!

quiltedlamb07 01-14-2011 06:36 PM

awesomeness

Lakeview Quilting 01-14-2011 07:35 PM

Your stash looks great, well organized!

I'm also interested in those pumpkins on your avatar -- whether they are crocheted or fabric and is it possible to get your pattern? They are so colorful!

bluadept 01-15-2011 06:29 AM

I can't believe you got all that fabric from the tubs into the shelving unit and still have room for more. There is a change for me then as I have 2 wall units with books in them right now. If I move the cookbook into the kitchen that would free up 1 whole unit and get some of the fabric bins out of the rest of my house. I have 12 plus of the large flip lid bins and I don't have to worry about flooding as my sewing room is not in the basement.

IndyQuilter 01-15-2011 06:40 AM

So nice and neat. I fear my fabric stash has grown too large to be able to wrap the pieces around a board and store them that way, not to mention the time it would take to do it and the cost. I think it is a good thing for new quilters or those with a small stash so it doesn't get ahead of you.

tomilu 01-15-2011 06:41 AM

I am totally envious.

hikingquilter 01-15-2011 06:50 AM

Good job! I like to have to have my fabric out on view, too, for inspiration. I get the cardboard bolts from the LQS and Jo Ann (they are happy to give them away) and cut them in half to fit on the shelves.

cowgirl 01-15-2011 07:31 AM

I just spent a whole week doing that to my fabric. Still not done but it makes it so much easier to see and it keeps it from getting so wrinkled. I love it too. (Plus I got to play with my fabric!)

craftymatt2 01-15-2011 07:52 AM

Very nice job

Dianne1 01-15-2011 09:11 AM

If ya'll ever come back home please visit my stash.

What a great idea to use a ruler to help in getting fabric out of a stack...thanks

javin22 01-15-2011 10:14 AM

Oh, I think that is wonderful. I should start pestering my hubby to make me shelves. I have to wrestle with tubs that are way too heavy.

SandyMac 01-15-2011 11:07 AM

Me too.
