Blooming 9 Patch
3 Attachment(s)
This is a blooming 9 patch, from the book Tradition with a Twist by Blanche Young. I only altered the pattern by making it bigger, so my quilt is 103.5x114.5. The top was amazingly quick to make, but quilting it was another matter. I started quilting swirls with black thread, did about 24" of the quilting across the entire quilt top (about 103"x24") and didn't like either the design or the thread color. I then took it off the frame and used the seam ripper extensively over a span of several days. Then I decided on a silvery grey thread and quilted feathers looping around all over the quilt. The quilting doesn't show much on such busy fabrics, but the silvery grey looks much better than the black. I pieced the back from leftovers.

Well done! I think you were smart to change threads.
I love your quilt! It is on my bucket list and you have given me renewed determination to get one started.
You've done a lovely job with the color gradation - I'm really impressed!
gorgeous! I'm trying to think of a pattern for a quilt for my nephew and his wife. I want it to be black and red. This might be just the thing!
I just remembered - want to warn everyone - if you use the directions in the book, you should be aware that the yardage requirements seem to be based on fabrics that have 44" usable width. I did my usual spreadsheet before starting, using a 40" usable fabric width, and found that the estimates in the book (for yardage and number of strips of each size) were often inadequate. You should plan on needing more fabric, and cutting more strips.

Gorgeous quilt. I can't imagine it being an easy quilt to piece, you did a great job on it.
Awesome quilt!!
very nice ... I know they are a lot of work
Your quilt is beautiful, love the fabrics and colors. I bought that book and the fabrics to make one, then I moved, and now I can not find my book. I usually keep books, patterns, fabrics together, so can't imagine where it could be. I keep my sewing room organized, so it's not lost in there. Hope I did not loan it out!

Amazing--it looks very complicated, rather than "easy"!! Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful quilt and quilting.
Love it. Your fabric selections were spot on for this pattern. I can't seem to pull the just the right ones for this pattern.
Beautiful quilt. I love the way the borders each transition so smoothly into each other instead of the typical straight line/color change method.
What an awesome quilt!
Dunster, your quilt is fantastic. Your choice of colors and fabric patterns works wonderfully. I also am very inspired by this quilt. Thanks for posting.
