Kay -- no pattern. I "inherited" 13 sues from my husband's grandmother's estate because neither of her daughters wanted to make something with them but thankfully didn't toss them. I've had them about 10 years myself before figuring out what to do with them. I finished the embroidery on them and added a hand to one. The embroidery patterns I used came mostly from clip art and I did them in such a way as my embroidery would be indistingishable to most eyes as being completed by a different person. Then I had to decide on a setting and trim them to size since they weren't the same size or square. I chose the irish chain setting--it fit the size I had to trim to for the most part, the number of blocks I had, and I love that pattern. By making it controlled scrappy (notice the color arrangement around each sue?) I was able to incorporate all 13 sues well and use the 2.5" squares of vintage fabric I had. I then came up with the border and drew the vine and flowers. The butterflies I used on the border did come from a book. I have a tendency to "build" quilts as I go along. This is probably my favorite quilt so far. I am planning to have this professionally quilted (hopefully this summer).

Beautiful quilt!!! I am not going to vote on border as I am not good at such things!

SunlitenSmiles 03-25-2012 03:01 AM

pieced border but no straight stopper border because it would detract from the beautiful scroll green and thinking the binding should be the same as the background of the pieced border for the same reason. will there be some embroidery details on the butterflys? This is really an outstanding quilt IMHO and hope you post more WIP photos.

Sassylass 03-25-2012 03:03 AM

I too like the pieced border....your quilt is beautiful too!!!

margaret53 03-25-2012 03:37 AM

That is a beautiful quilt! It is a great idea to do the SS with an Irish chain! I vote for a small pale green border and then the pieced border.

I agree with Vicki,,,the pieced border is beautiful but I think the Sues need to be in the spotlight and not share it.

Bonbonary 03-25-2012 03:55 AM

I think the pieced boarder has the most interesting look.

Debd 03-25-2012 04:24 AM

Pieced! Captures those beautiful blocks!

kuntryquilter 03-25-2012 04:30 AM

I think the pieced border.

labtechkty 03-25-2012 04:34 AM

I agree..I think you need to add a strip to separate Sue and then use the pieced border...Quilt is going to be beautiful..

callen 03-25-2012 05:03 AM

IMHO, I like the pieced border best.

glorcour 03-25-2012 05:04 AM

Depending on the size you want you could go without the added border or with the pieced border, but I would not add a narrow strip of any colour. I like the continuous scrappy look. Great quilt!

LoriMcc 03-25-2012 05:11 AM

Pieced border all they way! Very nice quilt!

tildiemae 03-25-2012 05:16 AM

Such a pretty quilt! I would 'frame' the quilt with a small strip of a solid color...green...as someone else has suggested and then add the pieced border. I think that would really finish off your beautiful quilt!

mame13 03-25-2012 05:17 AM

I like the pieced border best....

irquilter 03-25-2012 05:38 AM

I love your use of the irish chain for the setting of the sues, one of the nicest sun bonnet sue quilts I have seen very nice, I like the pieced border without adding any other inner or outer borders. Such a beautiful quilt already I can't wait to see it finished!

jaciqltznok 03-25-2012 06:07 AM

I think the pieced border will be over kill...you have a ton of movement on there now...it needs a quiet spot...or NO border! I actually thought the purple print was stunning and was just right amount of color & activity to calm down the quilt. IF you go with a solid border, move the butterflies out to overlap into the border. they are just too much where they are now!

ItsJustMe 03-25-2012 06:14 AM

How beautiful! I'd do the pieced border.

KyKaren1949 03-25-2012 06:39 AM

I like the pieced border the best.

solstice3 03-25-2012 06:45 AM

lovely combination of patterns and colors

Pamela Jo 03-25-2012 06:46 AM

The piece border is the one, but I do think the green would be the divider color. Beautiful work

wildyard 03-25-2012 07:00 AM

It's the pieced border in my opinion also. I would bind in the green. I think it's lovely! What a family treasure you are completing!

SuzyQ2 03-25-2012 07:08 AM

Hands down...the pieced border!

quilter68 03-25-2012 07:23 AM

Good Morning,
This is a BEAUTIFUL quilt. Just darling. IMHO, the edge looks best with the triple scrappy or no border.

Now I will look at everyone else's opinion.

i vote for inner border of tiny print then pieced or solid border with praire points of prints

sengell 03-25-2012 07:50 AM

Just the pieced boarder. What a lovely quilt.

I also agree with this idea, I love the pieced border, but the added solids will make it look fantastic.

joeyoz 03-25-2012 08:30 AM

I love the pieced border. Not sure about that butterfly with all the circles though.

Greenheron 03-25-2012 08:38 AM

Your first presentation, the pieced border, balances the composition and frames it beautifully. This is the 'coolest' SBS....

northern lass 03-25-2012 09:07 AM

The pieced border looks gorgeous and will finish it off beautifully.

karenpatrick 03-25-2012 09:08 AM

The pieced border is best, IMHO. Don't like the yellow border at all.

jmabby 03-25-2012 09:17 AM

I love the pieced border.

Gerbie 03-25-2012 10:04 AM

I like the pink border personally, I do like the pieced border, but I think it distracts from the rest of the quilt. Especially
since there are so many small blocks in the rest of the quilt. Just a thought!

scraphq 03-25-2012 10:25 AM

Beautiful quilt. The pieced border would be my choice.

helenquilt 03-25-2012 10:30 AM

Diffently the pieced border, also suggest a small border between the original and the pieced one.

JanieH 03-25-2012 11:02 AM

My favorite is the pieced border also.

ktmo815 03-25-2012 11:07 AM

pieced gets my vote - beautiful quilt

maryellen2u 03-25-2012 11:24 AM

Here's another pieced border vote. Your quilt is lovely! Can you remove the bright red and blue butterfly? It stands out too much because the color is to vibrant while to other colors are more pastel. It is such a gorgeous quilt with such talented piecing and hard work. BRAVO!

I love this idea, and by the way hat is one beautiful quilt!

DonnaQuilts 03-25-2012 12:53 PM

I agree on the 1 1/2" yellow border followed by the pieced border and bound in a solid pastel from the quilt pallet.
