Border advice on this Irish Sunbonnet Sue Please?

6 Attachment(s)
Hello All. I picked this quilt back up this week after a few months away from it. I have it ready to complete the handwork on the border when I'm away from my machine next week. But, I need some opinions, advice, suggestions, whatever on a final outside border. Currently the quilt is 87" x 87". The irish chain is a mix of reproduction and vintage fabrics. The Sue blocks are vintage with some currenty embroidery added by me to finish them off. This will be a family heirloom as the sue where from my husband's grandmother's collection. So, here are a few ideas, but I am not limited to these. What do you think? Any advice or opinions appreciated. Here's the quilt......

Here's a partial pieced border. Should I continue with it?

A solid border? doesn't have to be yellow.

A printed border...doesn't have to be purple?

Or, no further border at all, other than binding?

Thanks everybody.

I think the pieced border should be the one. Maybe put a small border of the light green between and after. Just a thought.

I love the pieced border. It will be a beautiful quilt

crafty pat 03-23-2012 10:37 AM

I also like the pieced border for your beautiful quilt.

Jammin' Jane 03-23-2012 10:42 AM

I really like the pieced border! :)

lmc8 03-23-2012 10:44 AM

How about a thin border of the yellow, followed by the pieced border, followed by binding in another solid color other than green or yellow yet pulled from the sue blocks?

Quiltngolfer 03-23-2012 10:48 AM

I like the pieced border best.

I like this suggestion, I think the pieced border right next to the Sue's detracts from them, but by breaking it up with the solid, it will spotlight both the beautiful Sues and your beautiful border.

Pieced border...it's a labor intensive one I know but perfect with everything else. :)

ann clare 03-23-2012 11:06 AM

Pieced border is beautiful.

mighty 03-23-2012 11:09 AM

I think the pieced border looks beautiful!

RonieM 03-23-2012 11:13 AM

I like the pieced border. It really makes the quilt.

That is one beautiful Sunbonnet Sue quilt!!! She is my favorite of all. I also like the pieced with a plain fabric. I also like the Irish chain. Make for an awsome quilt!!!

DogHouseMom 03-23-2012 11:22 AM

Georgeous quilt!! And I'm not ordiniarily a fan of SBS. But I love this one!!

I agree with these loadies also...that is so likely made.

i would go wtih a darker boarder so that your eye goes to the middle, and would not take away from the wonderful Sue's. I like the pieced as the 2nd option, bu think it may be "busy", if you know what I mean.

nunnyJo 03-23-2012 11:25 AM

Do the piced as it compliments the quilt, so soft and bautiful

I agree with MawMaw. You have done a beautiful job :) :)

By the time you get the beautiful pieced border on against the white, it gives your eyes a place to rest, then you go to the border and you don't need anything else. your eyes will go back to the girls which is the focus. Just a binding in the same value as the pieced border. by the way, the quilt is really gorgeous!

alikat110 03-23-2012 12:08 PM

I like the pieced border

nativetexan 03-23-2012 12:29 PM

oh the pieced one please. it is wonderful!!!!

Pamela Alsbury 03-23-2012 12:54 PM

Love the pieced border..

Grandma Jane 03-23-2012 01:08 PM

I really like the pink print for the border. I think the pieced border distracts from the main design of the quilt. I don't think the yellow blends as nicely as the pink print.

I agree, it will be even more beautiful!

I'm liking the pieced border mega much. Is the lavender print going to be the binding?

Sweet quilt! It should definately become an heirloom.

best,
d

Option 1, love it!

DITTO!

Quilterfay 03-23-2012 01:41 PM

I like the idea of a small border then the pieced and then another color. Beautiful.

QuiltNama 03-23-2012 01:47 PM

Love your pieced border

joysewer 03-23-2012 02:22 PM

MawMawB & I agree(and you've already got part of the piecing done!) Beautiful quilt!

Treasureit 03-23-2012 02:40 PM

I like the pieced border, but if you don't want to do all that work - I think the lavender one is nice too.

luce321 03-23-2012 02:41 PM

I like the pieced border with a thin border of yellow before and after. Please make sure to post a pic when completed.

I do love this quilt. The whole thing has been labor intensive. But, it's worth it. I auditioned some fabrics based on the recommendations and chose a few of my favorites to post. Is this what you all had in mind?

Oh, and I don't have any more of that green. I have a yellow green print, lots of yellow print, lots of purple print, and enough of the pink/yellow on cream floral to do a narrow border all around. Of course, it wouldn't hurt my feelings to have to purchase some more reproduction yardage if I need another color.....

teacupldh 03-23-2012 03:03 PM

The pieced border by itself would be perfect.

Lori S 03-23-2012 03:07 PM

Such a beautiful Quilt .. I vote very strongly for the pieced border... Do we get to vote more than once!?? He He !

granmalovesyou 03-23-2012 03:50 PM

I like the pieced border

sassy granny 03-23-2012 04:01 PM

The pieced border sewed next to the white border would be very pretty. I would bind that with a small pink floral or make a scrappy binding with different fabrics used in the quilt blocks. It is beautiful anyway you finish it.
