I like the pieced border, but I would put a narrow row of the yellow first to break it up from the main quilt.

I love the quilt. I like the pieced, scrappy border, but I would also use narrow solid borders inside and outside of that. Probably medium blue

I like it the way that you did it.

I really like the pieced border. The yellow alone is overpowering (IMHOP) although a narrower strip of yellow would work.
Except for the pale green, it looks like most of the fabrics are small patterns/calico. . .
I love the combination of squares and Sunbonnet Sue.

I agree with MawMawB. I love the pieced border

The pieced border continues the flow of the Irish chain so I like that one better

The pieced border is so beautiful.

Jane Quilter 03-31-2017 03:29 PM

wow...its beautiful. I wish I had that many 30's fabrics! I love the pieced boarder. Can't wait to see it finished.

Guess you probably already decided, however I liked the pieced border the best.

I also like the pieced border but would eliminate the vine section and just use a narrow white - without the butterflies.
Beautiful quilt and it will be stunning no matter how you decide to finish it.

I also like the pieced border. I think the yellow overpowers the delicate prints. I think I would consider that pink or lavender print for the binding as opposed to a solid.

Prairie points for sure.

Print border or no further border other than binding. IMHO, I I like the last picture best....only binding.

It looks like the OP hasn't been on QB since 2014. It sure looks like she combined a Triple Irish Chain with the Sunbonnet Sue in the center.

Border Advice

Lovely quilt; wonderful fabrics. I like the pieced border very much, but I think that to tie the mostly pastel quilt and white borders together, your vine border could be enhanced by a black (or black and white print as in your Sues) fabric vine finishing with a solid black binding frame. I, too would remove the butterflies as somewhat distracting.

March/April 2005 issue # 102 of "Quiltmaker" magazine features a really pretty Irish Chain Sunbonnet (pp 56-60) designed by Carol Goin.

Karamarie 06-06-2021 04:55 AM

I also like the pieced border adding a thin soli color between the quilt and border.

goldsberry921 06-06-2021 02:48 PM

It's absolutely stunning!!

Hi Kelpers77--I think I have successfully uploaded a picture of Carol Goin's "My Irish Grandma Sue" quilt published in Quiltmaker magazine March/April 2005, Issue # 102, pp 56-60. You can still find copies of that issue on the web but I do not believe the pattern is available any longer from the Quiltmaker web site. It's a really pretty Sun Bonnet Sue pattern--one of the nicest I have found. Pinterest has some closeup shots of the beautiful quilting on Carol's quilt.

Another vote for the pieced border. It just seems to "flow" better. Love the applique pieces in the border.

SallyS 06-22-2021 07:24 AM

The pieced border! It belongs. A second choice is lavender. Yellow is my favorite color, but doesn't look right with Sue.
