Cheap FMQ set up

I've been through a lot of setups for FMQ, I even had an Inspira frame with a Pfaff Grand Quilter but it simply took up too much room. Then I found a tutorial on You Tube called "How to Build a Cheap Sewing and Quilting Table".

I tweaked it a bit, I wanted to have the bobbin facing me so I purchased a Brother PQ1500, it has the bobbin on the side and a larger throat area. I purchased construction foam board that was the same thickness as the height of the base of my machine. When I lay the vinyl overlay down, I do tape the vinyl areas around the bed of the machine down to keep them from lifting. I have used the set up on 2 different size tables with no problem and when I'm done, I am able to store the board and vinyl until I need them again ( a hint on the vinyl, be sure and save the tissue and use it when rolling up the vinyl for storage to prevent the vinyl from sticking to itself it you are in even a slightly humid area).

The materials to make this cost less than $75. Also, Schmetz now has high speed needles available in 90/14 that you can use on your domestic machine.

Good going young lady. I've considered trying something like this. Was it tricky to get a cut-out shape? Any hints .... yours certainly looks nice and tight. Enjoy and happy FMQing.

Great DIY! I also really like the quilt in your last picture.

Nothing like "DIY" to get want you want.

I never saw insulation used on a table top, only in design walls. If it works for you, that is terrific.

I put my machine on top of the foam board and traced around it with a sharpie. I did the same with the vinyl. It wasn't difficult at all.
