A friend taught me this years ago and I did some for aprons. Sometimes I used graph paper and made up my own patterns. She did a lot of it--but never a whole quilt. Yours is beautiful! I've been needing a new "traveling project." I have a lot of gingham check fabric on hand, so you have given me an idea for my new traveling project. I also take my traveling projects with me when I go to dr. appts. with those drs. who are always way behind schedule. I cannot stand to sit idle long.

I did some googling for chicken stratch, too, and discovered a lady who sells chicken scratch quilts on line--from $150 (baby quilt) to $1000 (king-sized).

Forgot to add: we used cotton crochet thread (heavy like twine) instead of embroidery thread--much cheaper that way.

The friend told me that her mother saved the twine she unraveled from the feed and flour sacks back in the old days to do her chicken scratch with.

Used to make Chicken Scratch pillows about 30 years ago.
But never made a quilt.
I didn't know anyone did this anymore.
Still have a leaflet some where may have to dig it up. :lol:

I do chicken scratch. I have enough blocks right now to put two different ones together. Will post pics later. I am grieving right now waiting and hoping I will receive a pattern by mail. I met a really nice gal at a quilt show in another town. We talked about chicken scratch blocks. She said she had a snowman pattern. I squealed with delight as I am a snowman collector. She took my name and info and said she'd be traveling for a couple more weeks, but would mail it to me when she got back. She gave me her name and mailing address too. I waited over two months . . . wrote and reminded her and sent a stamped self-addressed envelope. Haven't heard a word . . . and am beginning to think that I won't. It's been over another month now. Oh well, didn't mean to ramble on with my tale of woe! Your top is really, really beautiful!

I did one in Green for a bassinette cover.It is so cute it has pictures and sush...baby asleep!!! on it.

I remember chicken scratch from years ago and we did aprons using this technique. Never thought of using it for a quilt. Another great idea!!! Thanks for sharing!

I learned to do Chicken Scratch when I was in high school. ( i am 62 now. I don't remember how to do it. Wish I did! There have been several times over the years that I wished I could remember how to do it.
