These are the fabrics I chose for my Chop and Sew. This is my first attempt at fabric selection involving anything more than two fabrics and I'd love some feedback. I haven't actually cut the starting squares yet--I think I'm having a case of cold feet...

Maybe replace the blue with a deep brown,purple/lilac - like the color in the stripe, light gold or a tan? Other than that - I love it, especially the paisley and the stripe.

DoxieMom 07-11-2010 04:58 AM

Thank you! The "blue" is actually darker and more of a purple than it appears in the photo, so I think I'm on the right track. I appreciate the feedback!

I don't know what a Chop and Sew is, but the fabrics are a wonderful choice. If you have always just picked out just 2 fabrics, it looks like you have steped out of your box. I try to get some of our guild members to do the same thing.
Congratulations on your brave choices.

Conniequilts 07-11-2010 05:34 AM

warm up your feet and start chopping. I think those are great.

CarrieAnne 07-11-2010 05:36 AM

I can't wait - its fun to see how it works in the end. I don't know what a chop and sew is. I will try to look it up. Good luck and keep us posted.

gollytwo 07-11-2010 07:16 AM

if you replace the blue you need to put another bright in, preferable not in a colour already there

littlehud 07-11-2010 07:59 AM

I wouldn't change a thing. You did a great job picking those fabrics. So pretty.

mollymct 07-11-2010 08:10 AM

I think your fabrics look great! Go for it! I also don't know what chop and sew is?! But go for it! Lol.

greencat 07-11-2010 09:24 AM

pab58 07-11-2010 01:01 PM

Linda B 07-11-2010 02:11 PM

So, what is a "chop and sew?"

annieshane 07-11-2010 02:15 PM

Great choices of fabrics. I would have recommened a purple in lieu of blue, so glad to hear the blue is actually purple. The colors are beautiful. Anything you do will be so happy with all these colors.

My worst fear as a new quilter was fabric selection. Looks as if you are getting over that as well.

Do post photos of your project as it evolves so we can all learn.

Ditter43 07-11-2010 03:25 PM

Such exciting fabrics....start chopping...we want to see what you are going to make!!!

reach for the stars 2 07-11-2010 04:04 PM

Here is a tutorial on the chop and sew.

I have always heard it called stack and whack.

Lori L 07-11-2010 04:34 PM

Just went a downloaded the chop n sew directions, thanks for the information. This will definately be going into my "to do list". Wow....is that list getting long!

DoxieMom 07-11-2010 04:37 PM

That's the one I've been using! I've done 3 cuts so far and everything looks good. I think I'm going to cut and seam one more time. I started with 10 inch blocks and they look like they've almost come together. I really appreciate all the feedback and encouragement from everyone! I'll post pictures after the next cut and seam.

I like your colors. What is chop and sew.

loishe 07-12-2010 03:35 AM

Love your fabric!! The colors are beautiful. hope you post picture when it done.

lizzy 07-12-2010 04:24 AM

I agree with changing the blue. It really jumps out admist the other beautiful choices you have. Maybe some other color in your striped fabric that is not quite so bright. Otherwise, your other fabrics all look great. :-)

anicra 07-12-2010 04:58 AM

Start chopping. Your colors are great.

Yarn or Fabric 07-12-2010 05:39 AM

That blue really pops out - I know you said it is more of a purple in real life but it seems sooo much brighter than the others.

I'm also going to do a chop and sew - but have to finish up the other projects that are in line... and backing up... but I want to make one so badly! Maybe for August's quilting group I'll do it to show off to the others...

jayelee 07-12-2010 05:42 AM

Those colors are great I think you will like that blue when you finally get it together I have found that most of the time the color That seems little to bright is the one that brings it all together

craftydiana 07-12-2010 06:07 AM

I don't know what a Chop and Sew is, but the fabrics are wonderful. Keep us posted on your progress.

lillybeck 07-12-2010 07:40 AM

I personally would eschange the blue for a purple but if you like it then go for it. I always do the things my way and people are shocked with the way they turn out. Great colors

DoxieMom 07-12-2010 08:10 AM

The blue didn't come out well in the photo--it's actually a purple and darker than the color value in the photo. I'm about 3/4 down with the blocks. Will post picture when completed.

dixiechunk 07-12-2010 10:51 AM

I would have changed either 3 or 6 because there isn't much contrast between the two. BTW, I liked the blue/purple one.

Ladymurphy - thanks for the link, I am a visual person and it really helped.
DoxieMom, just go for it. You will have a great quilt. Don't forget a few photos along the way.

wendiq 07-12-2010 11:46 AM

OOOOOOOOOOOH! Those are yummy. I do agree that maybe the blue is too bold, but I don't know your pattern???????

Here are some pictures of my progress. I think I'm going to do it one more time about 1/3 of the way down from the top and ~ left to right.
