I have been cleaning out some storage bins, trying to find places to put my stash now that my mom is coming to visit and I opened up one bin and look what I found!
My husband says that he thinks his grandma made this. It is sew entirely by hand! I don't know where or who this quilt is from, but it is made out of men's wool trouser material Don't know where this one came from either, it is just the top but all the birds are hand embrodiery |
Wow, what a find and how lucky that you cleaned out bins....one never knows...

What a neat reward for cleaning! I love the Sunbonnet Sue. Reminds me of one I had when I was about 7. No idea what happened to it. :(
|
What a neat find! I have old quilts made by DH's grandmother/mother probably during the depression/war era.
I just wish they would of tagged them so I would know exactly when they were made....and of course, they too are all handmade. cherish them! |
You hit the jackpot!

What lucky find.. I've been cleaning out closets the past 2 weeks and all I've found is junk, I keep wondering why I kept it. Am getting rid of lots of and will probably need it next week.

Great find!! Cool reward for doing some hard work! Maybe you Mom knows about the last two.

That men's wool pants and jackets quilt looks like the one I slept under all those years ago in cold, snowy West Virginia. It sure did keep me warm. I can remember cuddling up under it and 2 flannel sheets and maybe another quilt under it, then watching the snow land on the tree branches outside my window. Not too well insulated, I remember the curtains waving in the wind even though the window was closed and that little lock on it was snugged down tightly.
Really takes me back... |
They're all absolutely gorgeous! I love love love the sunbonnet sue!
|
Maybe your MOM will know something about the quilts you found. Such a nice find.
|
Oh what treasures. They will be wonderful completed and will become very useful family heirlooms. Kudos for cleaning that storage area (smile). Thank you for sharing.

Well I just gotta ask ... who is the owner of the totes? Did you move them from mom's to look through them? You say your husband thinks the Sue one belonged to his grandmother. So was that one mixed in with the others? I'm just curious. I have some questions about some quilt squares that I found in my parents' basement after they both had passed. But I believe all quilting was done by my mom's mom as she made quilts for all of us kids. No matter where they're from it's always nice to find them!! Especially for those of us who REALLY appreciate them.

Wow! Great finds!! :)
|
Isn't it funny the treasures we re-discover when we clean!
|
Lucky find
|
What a treasure. Threads of Time in Danville Il. has an old quilt hanging in one of their rooms that's the same embroidered birds as the third one but it's set with yellows. Chances are they're all from Grandma since they all look like the same era.
|
What a great find! Love the Sunbonnet Sue's.
|
 Must have been a treasure chest instead of a storage bin! Lovely quilts.
|
They are all awesome.
|
How VERY SPECIAL. I envy you. I am SO sentiment; and love finding and having 'the past' (and not just my family's....I love thinking of that someone having used or created this 'something') as part of my future!!!!! NICE find. Enjoy!

The second quilt from men's trousers takes me back to my childhood.
Grandma made four of these from Grandpa's old dress trousers for the beds at the summer cottage way back in the '40s. When clearing out the cottage after Dad passed on in 2008 (I had to put the cottage up for sale - couldn't afford to keep it) I found Raccoon critters had gotten into the cottage and decided to shred & chew up the quilts to make their own beds. It was so heartbreaking to see them that way - none of them could be salvaged. I had such fond memories of cuddling up in them when I went to sleep on chilly nights. Seeing yours really make me yearn to have one of Grandma's      |
What an adorable SBS!!!! I love her!
|
Wow, nice find.
