Controlled scrappy
1 Attachment(s)
Just finished this controlled scrappy quilt. I purchase fat quarter bundles to make quilts, but trying to cut fabrics to bring myself to make an uncontrolled scrappy like Bonnie Hunters quilts. Anyone else find it difficult to let go and sew totally scrappy?

That is a really cute pattern and quilt. At first it was hard for me to do scrappy but the more you do, the easier it is.

Very pretty. Good job with the colors! I really don't do scrappy. I like matchy.
Gorgeous quilt! Even though I haven't made a lot of quilts, I am in the process of a scrappy jacob's ladder. The only part controlled about it is the dark and light triangles to make the pattern. Maybe this is a result of my mom making mostly scrappy quilts.
I like "Matchy" too. Your quilt is beautiful.
This turned out beautifully. I like it a lot. That turquoise really makes the whole thing pop.
Great quilt! I think the only way I could go totally scrappy would be if someone invented glasses that convert all the scraps to black and white. That way I could piece by value instead of colour.
I love scrappy but I tend to love other people's scrappy more than my own!
So what's wrong with a controlled scrappy?? It is beautiful and the pattern would have disappeared if you had made it totally scrappy. I think you did a great job!
Love the pattern .. Love the fabrics! A very cheerful and colorful quilt! Great job done on your scrappy. Thanks for sharing.
I love your scrappy quilt! And controlled is ok with me. :)
Gorgeous quilt. Now take the scraps and add to other scraps.........

Yes, I agree. This is beautiful and I don't like "searching for the pattern" in a totally scrappy quilt--unless, of course, it is a 1 patch with just a bunch of squares. To the OP--It's beautiful! And yes, it has been a bit more difficult than I thought to make the scrappy--and letting go and working with value is something I'm working on. Also, Bonnie's tend to be very "controlled scrappies". Just read through her patterns--often she is working with lights/darks and/or blues or greens or oranges or reds or yellows, etc. There is usually quite a pattern there-- |
This is really pretty, I'm a bit too much of a control freak for scrappy, I like things to match or contrast and I would need to have a controlled scrappy like this, with an even balance of colours and fabrics.
i don't do totally uncontrolled, but separate into darks and lights. if i catch one fabric the same next to another, it will be set aside for later. your quilt is great

Lovely quilt.
Early in my time as a quilter I was watching a program suggesting that one grab a random piece from a paper bag for each placement. My DH, who was wandering through at that time exclaimed that it was a stupid idea and shows a lack of trust in one's own color selecting ability. We both love scrappy quilts but random is not the name of our game. We frequently confer on layouts, getting very pleasing results. IMHO, random ends up being splotchy. |
Absolutely! My scrappiest are all planned and very much controlled! Yours is gorgeous!
I love scrappy! The scrappier the better as far as I am concerned. Nothing matching matching for me!
I am in the group for controlled scrappy. Your quilt is beautiful. love all the colors.
Really great job!
I love your color choices.
I really like your quilt and I need to make a baby quilt for g/daughter. Can you give me the pattern name for this one. Love those colors too. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful! I am just starting doing scrappy--it is hard to let go of a themed pattern! The 15 minutes of play method helps.
Such a happy little quilt! I really like it. I tend more toward matchy, but am forcing myself to make a beach/outside quilt totally scrappy from each piece of fabric that I have used elsewhere. The key, i think, is not to judge it while it's still small. Keep going, give it contrast, enjoy the memory that each scrap brings, pat yourself on the back for your thrift, and stick with it . That's my advice to myself.
I am with you, I like controlled scrappy. Love your quilt.
I can't seem to do the 'pull it out of the bag' scrappy either!! My scraps just don't seem to play that well together for my taste. Love your quilt!!
Oh gee whiz... This is a dreamy quilt and I love it. Are you going to put another border on it?
Controlled scrappy, and even then I wonder. Yours is beautiful, love the pattern.
Very pretty. Really like your colors.
I make lots of scrappys and I love your controlled scrappy.
