This pillow was made by coloring a plain white square with crayons, placing a paper towel over it, and ironing it. Then I embroidered around it with the blanket stitch and embroidery floss. When I quilted the block, I quilted the background densely, but not the duck. It gives it an appliqued look. The duck pattern and pillow instructions are from the book "Beautiful Big Dogs".

The second photo shows how they look as traditional hand applique.

Those are both wonderful. I don't know which I like best.

Very nice, you have really good choices in color and your work is beautiful

They are both very nice! As for the "crayons" - you do mean Paintstiks right? Not Crayola kind... (just wanting to clarify).

Explosive blessings, abundance and inspiration to you all!

Beautiful pillow and throw. Love both and love the fabric and pieced blocks that you put with it. Great job.

misseva 02-09-2011 12:45 PM

Love the pix. I use crayons too. Did an Overall Sam that I traced with permanent markers and then used crayons to color - heat set. Can be washed. We even did that for some curtains in a Sunday school class room years & years ago.

katlady 02-09-2011 12:45 PM

Very neat pillow & wall hanging.

WisWis 02-09-2011 12:48 PM

gramquilter2 02-09-2011 04:23 PM

Love your pillow, I have seen the Crayola crayons used on a quilt before and have always wanted to try it. Yours is beautiful, love the colors and the border you used on the outside of the duck.

Maggiemay 02-09-2011 04:37 PM

What a neat technique & I was going to ask if it was washable but someone up a few remarks answered it. I like how you can control the shading. Very nice.

MamaBear61 02-09-2011 04:54 PM

Beautiful, I love the colours.

misseva 02-09-2011 05:19 PM

By the way - any 'ole crayons will do. You don't have to buy the Crayola Crayons made for fabric painting. I just used my grandkids crayons. So save yourself the expense. Just be sure to put a piece of paper (I use typing paper) over your colored items and heat set with hot iron. I have a book of embroidery patterns that calls for 'tinting' your flowers, etc. with crayons after you finish your needle work. I did this on some pillow cases and a sheet that I use for summer. Don't remember how many years ago I did them but they're still good.

stichinluvr 02-09-2011 05:26 PM

What a great idea. I've colored on fabric before but never thought to finish it off like this. thanks.

JEM65 02-09-2011 05:32 PM

Very unusual - I really like the set! Thanks for sharing!

jme 02-09-2011 05:36 PM

JoyjoyMarie 02-10-2011 05:45 AM

What cool projects, and they came out so very attractive. I once did a crayon type project, but it was so long ago I had forgotten it. Love the way you made it look like applique. Thanks for sharing!!

scaroca 02-10-2011 06:16 AM

I have thought about doing a crayon quilt but wasn's sure how it would turn out. Now I know. I would love it. Yours is beautiful.

ssgramma 02-10-2011 06:22 AM

They are both so pretty! I think I'll have to color something for GD - she always sends me artwork LOL

SandyMac 02-10-2011 06:49 AM

Those are just beautiful.

reach for the stars 2 02-10-2011 06:51 AM

Both are beautiful

dunster 02-10-2011 07:16 AM

I really, really like your pillow and quilt. I keep going back to look at them. The setting for the applique in the quilt is really wonderful.

You should have your GD do the coloring, then you make the quilt. :-)

Kitsapquilter 02-10-2011 08:43 AM

What a fun idea. Gives me the idea for a baby quilt! Thanks for sharing with us.

debs 02-10-2011 09:12 AM

Shame on you, I was going to put a pillow outline design on here for sale as I really didn't want to stitch it & the applique would be to detailed, but now I'm going to crayon color it & make a pillow for me or as a gift for someone. Its a pretty round design with butterflies & flowers great for spring if I can just find the time! Thanks so much for posting you piece.
