Curse Of The Tablecloth
2 Attachment(s)
There is no denying it ! Christmas is coming, and there is NOTHING we can do about it, except start early ! As anyone who has EVER given home made for Christmas knows, we start making things MONTHS in advance so that we can get it all done ! I am no different, though I do have a tendency to put the final stitches in at least one give on Christmas Eve LOL. So here are a few things I am working on for this years Holiday Season ! Some of you may remember the double sided tablecloth that I made for my Grandmother last year when I swore to myself that I was NEVER, EVER, EEEEVER going to make another one, because of all the trouble I had with so many seams on both sides , thread issues, tension issues ect. Welllllll…. My wonderful Aunt, decided that she HAD to have one. It is all I have heard about since last thanksgiving ! Sooooo being the awesome niece that I am, decided to make her one. Well, let me tell ya ! This time, was the last time ! If my cousin wants one, she can have her mothers ( my aunt’s ) when she is dead, because that is the only way she will get one ! This beast tested my patience to the extreme ! Her table is 4 feet x 8 feet ( a sheet of plywood with molding on the edges ) and I accounted for a 5 inch drop all the way around. The fall side pieced together easy peasy ! No issues to be seen ! It looks fantastic ! So then I start piecing the Christmas side. And all heck came down upon my sewing room. I swear there is a curse ! A Tablecloth curse ! This side was horrific ! The FIRST top I made, I was thinking, okay, this looks good, nice points, good seams…. then WHAM ! I realize I had only made enough blocks for HALF !! I had 16 blocks and not 32 !! I also did not have enough of the fabric to make another half .. soooo… I pieced an entire DIFFERENT Christmas side all together ! I am sorta glad I did, because it looks awesome like this !! Then came the basting ! I had to VERY carefully baste this bad boy so that the borders lined up on all 4 sides, since I was using the wide border as my drop, and wanted some consistency from one side to the other. Let me tell you, I had to ask myself what drugs I was on yet again, to decide to make such a thing ! More than once I decided that if I wasn’t on any when I made the decision to make the dang thing, I sure as heck should be on SOMETHING by the time I was done !Then there was the quilting. Ohhh the glorious choices I made for quilting. Yeah. I decided to use the SAME Variegated thread on both sides that I did for last years ! You may remember.. different weights ( top thread was a 60 weight, bobbin was a 40 weight ! ), different brands ( Aurifil on the top, Coats and Clark in the bobbin ) Hahahahaha… yep, I was in need of medication.Once I started quilting, I was thinking… this isn’t so terrible… not a single snapped thread… then the bobbin ran out, and I flipped it over ! The reason there was no broken thread on the top, was because there was NO tension on the BOTTOM ! My entire first bobbin of thread was sitting there snaking along the bottom of the quilt, being held on so loosely that a mouse fart could have pulled it off ! So a ripping I did go ! An entire L bobbins worth ! Once I fixed the tension issue, things went much smoother. The quilting finished up without any more major incidents, and the tripping up went very smoothly. I still need to bind it… but I am waiting for my refill of Xanax ! You know, just in case ! |
Love both sides. Did you put batting/ wadding in between? I desperately want a tablecloth but not sure about how glasses etc will sit on it especially the seams. As you appear to be an expert could you help with these questions.
I use Hobbs 80/20 as batting. Once it is washed it gets that crinkled look, but I have had no problems using a high steam iron to get it to play nice with glasses. My grandmother irons hers ( the one I made last year ) before she puts it on the table, and we managed to keep it spill free through Thanksgiving AND Christmas. She does NOT put plastic over it either. I make them darker and scrappier for just that reason, it helps hide any possible spills alot better than lighter colors !

I LOVE this!! I have a couple of quilted table cloths from Williams Sonoma and I was thinking of making one myself, gives me great ideas!!
No gifts started here, or even though about, I'm focused on Halloween and a wedding gift. |
Beautifully done, I to have the *cursed days* also but I just go outside and vent to the birds!
good morning SOQ, your tablecloth is beautiful. a job well done and when you tire of quilting go for "story telling". you do a fine job there also !!!!!! god bless
very nicely done
Great quilt/tablecloth!
great job,
Stunning! I had enough trouble with a double sided baby quilt, so don't think I will attempt this anytime soon. Love yours!!
I know it made you crazy, but it sure is a lovely tablecloth.
Stupendous job on this! Don't blame you for not wanting to do more.
I agree with amock. Tablecloth is beautiful. You could write a book...at least short stories.
Very nice!
nice job!!!!
Nice & thanks for the info on the batting. I was wondering about the stability of setting glasses on it!
Great job. Can hardly wait to see what you tackle next.
Loved reading your narrative of the tablecloth! Sorry it drove you batty, but the finished product is lovely. Thanks for the early morning chuckle!
Both sides turned out beautifully. You did a great job.
I have used Hobbs Thermore as batting for table toppers/runners. It is a very thin polyester and is suggested for things like this and quilted clothing.
Wow, your tablecloth is so pretty. I love both sides. Sorry it was such a trial for you, but at least you finished it in plenty of time. Now you can move on to other more peaceful projects.
Both sides are pretty. Loved your story. I agree you should write more stories. Glad you were able to finish. But ......you know you sound pretty sane to me. Hugs for a job well done. BrendaK

Your table cloths are really pretty. Sorry you had so much trouble. Sounds like some of my trying days. Seems that the first seam I make I have to rip. My own carelessness. If I did not have so much fabric on hand I would quit sewing.
Pretty quilt--or should I say quilts. If I could remember--I can't--so have no fear, I'm betting you will be doing another one next Christmas for another relative. Maybe you could make the next one one sided, but I doubt it. You are just a sucker for punishment. I hope someone with a better memory will comment next year to remind me. lol By the way I am also a sucker for punishment--welcome to the club.

It came out great! At the risk of showing my maturity level I will admit that I'm sitting here giggling about the mouse fart! Haha
Neat idea!! both sides are very pretty. would be fun to use.
Thank you everyone ! It is a miracle that it managed to get completed and not tossed into the wood chipper like I threatened to do on more than one occasion ! And no... I will NOT forget and make another one next year LOL. No way !
I understand completely, I made a friend a 14 foot tablerunner for her Christmas table.

Sorry it was such a bummer to make, but your tablecloth is beautiful on both sides! It was taking on quite a lot to make it double sided, but the end result was worth it.....at least to the rest of us! (PS) I loved reading your story.
I think you have a multitasking table the AND quilt! Both sides are really pretty. I would be sure to tell the niece of this table cloths creation. Let her spread the story to keep anyone else for making a request. You did a beautiful job. I know the frustration of ripping out threads. God bless you for taking on the second challenge.
Good for you. I was just sitting here thinking about what small items I can make for my co workers. So glad you were able to start early.
I feel you!!!! Glad I'm not alone!!!!! Good job...
Looks great. Thanks for the idea. Spray it with Scotchguard fabric protector. If anything is spilled on it it will just bead up and you can wipe it off right away without it staining. I don't think it will survive the washer though so you will probably have to spray it again the next time you use it. You can also try the new Never Wet. It is a waterproofer for fabric. It says if you spray your shoes you can walk thru water and it won't soak thru the fabric.
It turned out very nice! I'm sure your Aunt is going to love it! I especially like the Christmas side!
This is really pretty.
Just gorgeous and more gorgeous.
I'm wondering why the special effort to make it double sided. I think I'd rather have two separate table cloths and avoid the extra hastle. It would cost more for the extra batting and backing, I realize. You made a very special gift. Hope she treasures it. |
The end result was worth it. Bless you for making the effort! She will be thrilled I am sure.
