I've been playing around with some curved crosshatching from Karen McTavish's new "Custom Curves" book. I marked the crosshatching with a blue water soluble marker so I could get the spacing right. I did this on my domestic machine, a Juki TL98. First I did a section of the crosshatching with the walking foot, and then the other 3 sections freemotion with the hopping foot. On a small piece like this, about 16" square, the walking foot is nice, but with a larger quilt, it would definitely be easier doing FMQ so the whole piece wouldn't have to be turned for each row.

I'm considering trying a small wholecloth...what do you all think?

Wendy

Here's a closer view of the crosshatching. The piece has been washed and dried after quilting to give it that "puckered" look.

This piece is about 16" square and done on my domestic machine. I used muslin and Warm and Natural cotton batting.

Wow that's fantastic quilting

Bonbonary 05-08-2011 07:56 AM

I think you did a great job. I'm just beginning FMQ and hope I can do this type of quilting one day. It will take me a very long time to match yours.

Just keep at it and you'll get there, Bonnie! I've only been doing this for a couple of years, in my spare time. When I first started out, I felt like a Kindergardener trying to write with a crayon, only worse! I really feel like I've gotten a lot of help in the learning process from lots of books and videos, but my particular favorites have been Sharon Schamber's and Karen McTavish's.

That is beautiful and you did it without the rulers. I am waiting for my templates to come and I am going to use them on my Big Brother.

I think that you are well on your way to creating the next show stopper!

Rose L 05-08-2011 08:27 AM

Stunning! I love your curved crosshatching and yes I think you should do a whole cloth quilt. It will be wonderful with your talent.

SharonD 05-08-2011 08:30 AM

I think it's wonderful. How you can do that on free motion I don't know. I can never keep straight lines straight. I think a whole quilt would look lovely.
Well done

Thanks to your post, I showed DH your curved cross hatching. DH loved it! He just told me I can order for myself my Mother's Day presents. I'm going to order 2 things: Ronda's Double S curved cross hatch rulers, thanks to you!!!, and a book by Pam Bono, The Big Book Of Quick Rotary Cutter Quilts, containing a quilt pattern for flying geese (literally geese in flight and not the flying geese quilt block pattern.) I've been wanting to experiment with the curved cross hatches on my domestic for a while now and the geese will go into the quilt for our bed.

Congratulations!!! Glad I could help out!

LOVE the geese quilt design you've got coming too!

For this piece, I made a half circle template out of clear gridded template plastic from JoAnn's, but it was clear that Ronda's rulers with the 1/4 and 1/2 inch markings would work MUCH better. So...I ordered and just got Ronda's small double S curved ruler in the mail and can't wait to try it out. I've also talked to the LQS about the possibility of ordering in some of her rulers. If they will, I'll buy more through them; if not, I'll order more from Quilter's Rule.

Can't wait to see what you create--Have a great time with your Mother's Day gifts!!!

Your quilting is wonderful. Wool will puff better. Or there is a very thin polyester that you can put over the cotton and get great relief in those feathers. They are done so well.

Thanks~I think you're right. This quilting needs more puff than the cotton batting gives it. I've got some nice poly I'm going to try out. I also find that I really like a couple of layers of 80/20 to give a quilt a softer feel and drape. I used Hobbs wool in a sofa throw and I just LOVE it, but it's not as easy-care as poly or poly cotton blends.

This turned out awesome! You should send a picture of it to Karen McTavish, she loves to see work from her books, tutorials, classes, etc. Or at least that is what she said in the class I took. She is so down to earth and nice I am sure she would love to see it. Also please let her know how you went about creating it. And yes I think you should go for a whole cloth. This design you did is just breathtaking.

CajunQuilter2 05-08-2011 10:10 AM

That is awesome. One day maybe I will be able to do something like that.....:-)
