WOW! Those are impressive! Are they paper pieced?

I really like your use of colors as well. Good work!

Tricky 01-11-2008 02:50 PM

Thank you yes they are-I am a new quilter(1 yr) and paper piecing took the sense of intimidation out of something I wanted to do my whole life!!

Tricky 01-11-2008 02:51 PM

I love the quilt on your Avatar

Diamonds 01-11-2008 03:37 PM

They are awesome....

Chele 01-11-2008 03:40 PM

Gorgeous! You've obviously mastered paper piecing! I really love your fabrics too!

Tricky 01-11-2008 03:43 PM

Thank you--most of the fabrics were picked up at Thrift Stores!!

Tricky 01-11-2008 03:44 PM

Thanks the patterns are Carol Doak's and the fabrics are mostly from Thrift Stores

Hey love your quilt!

I about fell off my chair who' when I saw "Denman Island" in the topic. Been over 45 years since I was there. Used to go often - my step-dad worked for Canadian Fishing Co. and we spent a lot of time up and down around and through the area. Loved it there - Beautiful!!!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful handy work - and for bringing back some very old memories.

Tricky 01-11-2008 03:53 PM

Thank you
We've been on Denman in the winter since 2005 when we built here--beats the Ontario winters. We are going to be hitting the road in a 25 ft trailer soon for a few years and are hoping our house here sells even though we love it here. Too much of North America that we haven't seen and the trailer is set up so I can still quilt!!!

Very pretty! The perfect points in paper piecing (say that fast!) really are striking. I have a star sampler rumbling aeound in the back of my head, and I think it will use some blocks using that method.

Good job!

Tricky 01-11-2008 03:55 PM

Looking forward to seeing your sampler

sandpat 01-11-2008 03:55 PM

WOW...WOW!!! I'm very impressed..I'm absolutely going to HAVE to learn to paper piece. Your blocks and quilts are beautiful...newbie or not~

Wow!! That's taking quilting to a whole new level. Just amazing.

Thanks for sharing your masterpieces. :D

Tricky 01-11-2008 04:06 PM

This forum is amazing--Thanks for the feedback--We have friends in Canadaiqua --our children and their children played in the Friendship games between Canadaiqua and Midland Ontario--are you near there as I know Canadaiqua is On one of the Finger Lakes?

Pam Pollock 01-11-2008 04:11 PM

Thanks for the close up photos. I just knew they would be as amazing up close. They are so neat!! Great job! Love the other quilts too. Thrift stores can be a good source of material if you hit it just right! Thanks again for posting the close up. It really helped me to see what was going on better.

Pam

Knot Sew 01-11-2008 04:46 PM

I have tried and tried to do paper piecing, I have had no luck, that is an outstanding job. I just love your quilt. The thrift stores here never have fabric like that......... great job :D

Tricky 01-11-2008 05:00 PM

Thank you Ruth--I found it easy but then I am totally intimidated at the moment with quilting without paperpiecing!!
Tricky

Dawn Hendrix 01-11-2008 05:19 PM

WOW.. you did a FABULOUS JOB!!!! I to was intimidated by paper piecing.. and then my light bulb went off and I to have mastered it!

Congrates and WELCOME!

MissTreated 01-11-2008 05:26 PM

Wow, nice job, Tricky! I, too, love to paper piece. Right now I'm working on one, half the blocks are paper pieced, and I'm at the painful part of ripping off the paper. It's a little dull....

Tricky 01-11-2008 05:27 PM

What kind of paper do you use for your paper piecing. I am using a light weight computer paper as I haven't found anyplace that sells foundation paper in bulk??

Tricky 01-11-2008 05:28 PM

Yes taking the paper off is a drag but I have found if I do it while I'm watching TV with my husband it isn't as onerous.

We were in Canadaiqua this spring. Had a wonderful old Pub with food good enough to remember 6 months later! Make your way to Utah and I can help you great things. Sara

MissTreated 01-11-2008 05:32 PM

I did that last night, but truly, there isn't anything good on TV!! Might have to put in a movie tonight.

M

Tricky 01-11-2008 05:38 PM

"ll let you know when we are headed through Utah--probably next fall as we are heading east through Canada starting at the end of March. We crossed over the top of the Utah panhandle this past September on our way to the Grand Coulee Dam. We were totally amazed by the countryside-did not expect the prairie we found around Spokane.

Tricky 01-11-2008 05:40 PM

The only good thing on up here last night was CSI the original and even it wasn't great. Movies are a good idea they take longer so more paper can come off!!!

MissTreated 01-11-2008 05:42 PM

A movie it is. I have one I borrowed from a friend, I'll get into that tonight. Maybe even be able to get some sewing done after.

One of our local quilt stores is having a sale tomorrow, so I can't stay up too late! Better be there early!!!

It's beautiful! I hope you have fun with your full-time traveling!

annmarie 01-11-2008 08:28 PM

Beautiful quilts! I hope lots of newbies see your post as most think paperpiecing is tooooo hard to try. It's NOT & your lovely quilts are proof of that!

Joanieu 01-17-2008 07:13 AM

WoW that is a good looking quilt. I did paper piecing once for a baby quilt, but didn't come out very good. After seeing your quilt, I want to try again after we finish moving. I still consider myself a newbie even though its been almost 2 yrs since I started, but only 3 completed projects. Have fun and be safe on your traveling... :)

Tricky 01-17-2008 08:22 AM

Thank you.
The paper piecing was the only way for me to learn to quilt without being totally intimidated. My first block was a log cabin block that I found on aboutquilting.com--the instructions were step by step and easy to follow. I also borrowed a paperpiecing beginners book from the Denman Island Quilters that took me through it step by step again--By Carol Doak I love the accuracy that the paperpiecing allows. Every seam and every point are pretty accurate.

try again its fun!!

Joanieu 01-17-2008 08:31 AM

Yeah, I know what you mean about being intimidated... my very first quilt was a kit from Joann.com which I am still working on - just the quilting now. But I really don't think I like piecing the quilt together. I do love applique and hand quilting... As soon as I finish my 3 WIP's I want to do Hawian (spelling?) applique or wholecloth quilting plus now I want to try paper piecing again thanks to you for showing your quilts.

That's what I love about this place, everyone here gives me inspiration and makes me feel better about my quilting experience... :)

Now, that I have talked so much, I need to get back to work... :)

The Compass on Point is stunning! Thanks for sharing

Tricky 02-25-2008 07:18 PM

Thank you!!
I have now cut out my 6th and 7th quilt tops as Iam off to a retreat in March. Likely I'll start before then as they are calling for rain the next three days!!!

Diamonds 02-27-2008 06:26 AM

They are beautiful but paper piecing scares the crap out of me  I have read the threads here and I keep thinking I can do this... However for some reason my brain just does not wrap around the process :(

Tricky 02-27-2008 08:29 AM

Please don't let paper piecing scare you I was a totally new quilter when I did these quilts with paper piecing. My first lesson was a log cabin square which I did following the instructions on about.com and with the help of one Carol Doak's paper piecing books that I borrowed from the Guild here on the island. I am now working on quilt number 6 and they have all been paper pieced. I am learning different things as I go. The last quilt Eloise's flower garden I left all the paper on while I stitche all the blocks together. It was more difficult to put throught the machine as the quilt got bigger but it retained its shape much better than my previous quilt tops. The one I am working on now I found in an old patchwork book and adapted it to paper piecing. It is called Indian Hatchet--very easy to adapt. Best wishes and do try your hand at it. That all being said I am scared to try to quilt without the paper!!!But I will with all my squares and rectangles of scraps!!

barnbum 02-27-2008 03:46 PM

That is a very unique quilt!! Stunning!!

bj 02-27-2008 04:06 PM

WOW! I was expecting a photo of an island. Your quilts are just beautiful! And way more fun to look at. Good luck with your travels. When we retired I tried to talk hubby into a couple of years of traveling. I think he was a little frightened to be cooped up in small spaces with just me and the dog to keep him company :) Or maybe it was his arthritis. Long rides make him so stiff he can't walk very well for a day or so!
