My hubby asked for an "Indian" quilt. I came up with this. I'm thinking about trying "again" to machine quilt. Should I? I'm a very experienced hand quilter but have not had success with machine quilting. I have drawn a swirly-type pattern for the white but am stumped as to what to do with the bird. Thinking about plain in-the-ditch. I know there are lots of suggestions out there. Thanks.

that is great

go for it. Think your idea of swirly in the white would soften that area while in the ditch would highlight the "Thunderbird?"

Very pretty quilt...

My, that is gorgeous! I love the colors. I'm a hand quilter too but now learning to long arm quilt. What about making a template and putting some arrowhead shapes on the eagle? Can't wait to see what you decide to do. Please post again when it's all finished?!!

Hope you MQ it- it's beautiful!!! :D

Beautiful quilt! Good luck what ever you decide.

This is beautiful and I think your plan for the white area is great. There is a technique called "continuous curve" that might work for the eagle. It's easy and fairly fast and can be done on a longarm or on a regular machine. There is a Youtube video that gives general instructions if you google continuous curve quilting.

That's what I was thinking but not sure I like in-the-ditch stitch.

Good idea. Have to think on it. Thanks.

Beautiful quilt, but I have no idea how to quilt it.

timepasser 02-08-2011 09:20 AM

gorgeous

I would do a straight stitch on the diagonal. That is popular machine stitch these days and is easy to do with the walking foot that comes with the quilter. Very nice quilt!

SuziC 02-08-2011 11:26 AM

That is gorgeous!!! Either way it is going to enhance your beautiful quilt :!:

candlequilter 02-08-2011 11:43 AM

I love your quilt top. I would try to do a diagonal curve from one upper corner to the opposite bottom corner to give it a look like the bird has feathers (not the regular feather design you see on many quilts).

Thanks,

Well, I chickened out (again) on maching quilting. I think I will just do what I know - I will be hand quilting it. :)
Thanks for the ideas.

Hey, Dorothy! I have drawn my pattern on half of the white - not sure what I will do on the blue. But I have decided to hand quilt because I can do it in the living room in my easy chair and not working over a sewing machine off in another area. When my husband is home, I like to be in the same area as he and since I quilt all of the time (I am driven) this will be best for me. My fingers are healed well and I guess I am ready for pain again! :)

grannyoquilting 02-09-2011 05:41 AM

Beautiful, it seems like when I quilt things it just comes to me as I am quilting along. The quilt will tell you what it wants. But your piece work is outstanding.

Cyn 02-09-2011 05:42 AM

I can't do machine quilting either but your quilt is awesome!

Yooper32 02-09-2011 05:53 AM

In the ditch definetly for the thunderbird. Great quilt.

CIGAINEROJD 02-09-2011 06:10 AM

awesome

grannyp70 02-09-2011 06:22 AM

Beautiful quilt, I love it, you did a great job on it. I wouldn't do a whole lot of quilting on it, don't want to take away from the thunderbird. Just my opion.

thegypsy1968 02-09-2011 07:10 AM

Absolutely Unique..Well done and thanks for sharing..mmmm I would probably go with your idea..swirly for the white and stitch in the ditch for the bird..It really is Sweet!!!

pattilynn 02-09-2011 07:12 AM

I think you should..... you'll do great

Laura22 02-09-2011 07:13 AM

No quilting suggestions for you but had to say the quilt is really cool, love the design.

colleen1978 02-09-2011 07:28 AM

I think some feathering on the bird would be nice.

Debd 02-09-2011 09:24 AM

I'd create feathers on the bird by quilting it diagonally on the wings and tail, with maybe a cross hatch on the body.

LivelyLady 02-09-2011 09:33 AM

Beautiful quilt! You'll have fun fmq it. The easiest way I was taught was to STD in a few grids following seams. Then you can remove pins and FMQ in the sections.
