My grandson is a special needs child and I wanted to make some quilts for his classmates that ride the bus. Something small enough for them to have on their laps when they ride the bus so they will stay warm. In Michigan, we can have some sub-zero temps!

Since i'm new to quilting, I recruited my sister and niece who are also new to quilting to help me so we could have these ready by the end of September. We each have a boy and girl quilt to do. I chose Lance and Emily. My grandson Kayden seems to be really attached to both of them.

I had the teacher paint their hand and put the print on some fabric. It is the center piece of the quilt and I will embroider their name and the year on it.

This quilt is for "Lance". He is a seriously impaired child who LOVES dogs and smiles everytime he see's Kayden.

The second quilt (pink) is for Anaya, made by my niece Maryann. Anaya is a sweetie and this quilt is totally fitting of her personality.

The third quilt is for Jauann and made by my sister Linda. He is a very inquisitive child and will love all the bright colors on this quilt.

3 quilts down, 4 more to go! Thanks for looking!

My daughter has spina bifida - she has received two quilts, much simpler than those you & your family have made. We love them very much, regardless. You're doing a lovely mission!

They are so darling. I especially love the quilt with the hand print. My son may not be able to play with toys, but he sure enjoys his quilts. And they sure brighten up a hospital room when that is needed.

Hospital stays we know all too well (50+ brain surgeries on my grand baby). He received a quilt when he was about 2 from Children's Hospital of MI volunteers. He will be 6 on Sept 10 and he still has the quilt and will sign for it.

Quilts do indeed brighten up the long days for the kids!

Kitsapquilter 08-30-2011 04:51 PM

What beautiful gifts you and your family are making and the joy your are giving! I have a little guy with special needs too and I believe he is pure, untarnished by the world around! His name is Jonathan and although he 16 he looks more like 9 and is developmentally more about the 2-3 range. Thanks for sharing...you lifted my heart today!

emsgranny 08-31-2011 06:17 AM

What a great idea!! I have found that the "special needs" children are so special and loving - they will most certainly appreciate their quilts. Also These kids bring out the best in us and allows us to show our love and support. You and your family are doing a great thing!!! Just goes to show that the little ones have a gift of bringing people together and brings out the best in all of us!!

While all of them are great quilts I really like #2. I really like that each quilt is personalized. Their families will be touched that you all hae thought of the needs of their kids. Thanks soo much for sharing.

brightstar_202 08-31-2011 07:01 AM

very nice love um.....

pollym44 08-31-2011 07:33 AM

Blessing to you all for what you do. Before I thought about quilting (or maybe it was there and I didn't see it), I made an elephant "quilt" for a little boy who had been badly burned and was bed ridden for a long time. Now, at 44yrs he still comes by to see me and still talks about that rag. They will remember your kindness and those quilts will be in their hearts yrs later.
After seeing the happiness and love they bring, you're gonna be hooked on quilting for kids. I am. God bless you for what you do.
