"East Meets Midwest" an Asian scrappy quilt
5 Attachment(s)
I just pulled this off the frame today so it hasn't been bound yet. I posted a sneak peek here:
https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...p-t290057.html The name comes from the Asian inspired quilting and fabrics which is the East and the traditional Ohio Star block, the midwest. This is the first time I have put a pillow tuck on a quilt and it works well with this one. They are Fan blocks set on point. Also scrappy. Specs: Pattern: None. Made Ohio Star Blocks and matched them up with chain blocks. The blocks finished at 7 1/2", an odd size come about by my experiment in making the hourglass units from HST units. I pretty much made the quilt for the quilting idea I had. batting: 1 layer of Hobbs Polydown Thread: Isacord polyester in the top in a gold color and magnaglide prewound in white in the bottom. Quilting time: 28 1/2 hours Ruler used: Quilted Pineapple 8" arc ruler Border stencil used: Circling cranes 9" size http://www.quiltingstencils.com/Circ...-9_p_1776.html The quilt on a queen size bed: A close up of the quilting in the blocks The border. I figured out how to quilt the circling cranes continuous which was great. Then I had to cut my thread and tie off for the center medallion but that was also quilted continuous. The back I used an Asian panel and more scraps to piece it up to size. I used a french braid on the sides and smaller version of the same on top and bottom but will lose about half of the bottom one. I will probably bind it in black. And talk about lucky! Here is how little thread was left on my cone when finished up. As always, I look forward to your comments. |
You're right, the fans are perfect on the pillow tuck. Those Asian fabrics make gorgeous Ohio blocks. Such a story of diversity in a quilt. Beautiful!

Beautiful!!

Boy, you sure covered a lot of quilting ground in that quilt! I love those creative quilts, where one combines designs, blocks and fabrics into one quilt and you've done it brilliantly! I think it makes for such an interesting and entertaining quilt to look at, and really fun to make as it isn't so repetitive. Your quilting choices are great and I particularly like your circle cranes. The back of the quilt is as awesome as the front! Just awesome!
|
that's gorgeous! This is the one for your Mom,right? She will love it!
|
fabulous quilt and quilting!

I love Asian fabrics and I love both sides of your quilt. In fact I may love the back more than the front. Both sides are wonderful and the quilting is stunning.
|
I like how the quilting enhances the piecing. That's a great quilt!
|
Wow! Stunning quilt and quilting.
|
Amazing quilting.
|
Both the front and back are beautiful! I love seeing a quilt where every part--fabric choice, piecing and quilting--works together as an integral part of the design.

I just love your quilt, I do not remember seeing Ohio Star that pretty. Your fabrics are pretty as well and I really enjoyed and appreciate your detailing how you made this quilt, how you quilted it and the thread you used. If we all did that we would be learning even more from this forum. thank you

Gorgeous quilt and quilting! Thanks so much for taking the time to share all of the pictures, I really enjoyed them!

Another stunner!
The blocks are wonderful, but the quilting, wow! I really like the double orange peel in the black squares, but I just love the 'lotus flower' motifs around the circles. Also, thanks for the info on the crane motifs! |
