I love your fabrics. They are perfect for an I Spy quilt.

some prints really are more usable (in my opinion) as an individual square/picture when they are "fussy cut" so that each piece is like a picture instead of just cut "wherever"

Ahhh I like to see the whole bird. That is great but wouldn't it make less 5" squ.

How much fabric did you buy to make 40 squares? That is the ones that you aren't fussy cutting

Technically, one could POSSIBLY "get by" with 3/4 of a yard - IF the fabric is cut really straight and it shrinks very little, and there is at least 41 inches of usable fabric across the width. Theoretically, 40 inches should be enough to get 8 squares from. It isn't. There seems to be a bit of "loss" at each cut.

7/8 of a yard (31 1/2 inches) gives one a little wiggle room. If I was buying new fabric and watching my pennies, I would buy 7/8 of a yard. It is so frustrating to be about an inch short and not being able to find any more.

Most people buy a yard in case they mess up a cut - the ruler slips, the cat got in the way, there is a flaw in the fabric, etc.

Fussy cutting usually takes quite a bit more - this is where taking a template along and checking out how it goes is useful.

It is only "necessary" to get 40 5-inch squares from what you have and that it be I Spy type fabric. (and washed)

I Spy type fabric has something that can be identified on it - such as baseballs, cats, macaroni, cars, etc.

Some of the older fabrics are absolutely adorable - and less likely to be duplicated.
