This is my first attempt at hand applique - I started small!

Each individual flower which makes up the Geranium head is held in place with 3 French Knots. For the veins on the Geranium leaves I used 2 strands of DMC thread.
Still not too sure whether I am going to make it into a small wall hanging or a cushion cover. I also thought of adding binding made out of the buttermilk fabric to frame it or maybe black to bring out the French Knots on the flowers - what do you ladies advise?

Tisha.

MAXIES2 03-29-2009 01:20 PM

Trish, that is lovely, depending in where you maybe putting this I would go for a black edging, but then I always do favour darker colours.

You have done a beautiful job and I love it. I would go with the black or a dark green

MadQuilter 03-29-2009 01:27 PM

Very pretty. You can use any of the colors from the piece in the binding. Dark green, red, or black.

sewjoyce 03-29-2009 01:35 PM

Wow -- very nice! (Sure you don't want to make a big king-size quilt like that???)

I think a dark green would frame it nicely.

Katherine, Darlene, MadQuilter, Joyce - thanks for your comments I think I am tending to lean towards a black binding/edging to make the French Knots pop out.
Will post once completed.
Joyce - this is one block of 9 I think - each one is a different flower, it would take me years to get it made

Thanks for your comments - I have the pattern if you want a copy PM me with your email address & I'll forward it onto you. There are about 9 different flower blocks in total. Each one as beautiful as each other.

Great job - hard to believe you have not been doing applique for years!

littlehud 03-29-2009 06:12 PM

This is your first try. You are a natural. That is beautiful. I would make it a wall hanging.

live2teach 03-29-2009 06:19 PM

Absolutely beautiful!

Tisha, Did you use freezer paper to applique?

k3n 03-30-2009 02:06 AM

Tisha i love it! It's so realistic.

I agree with black for the binding; if you don't want to do them all, you could do a few (!) of your favourites as individual wall hangings then group them together. Just an idea - I'm good at finding work for other people! LOL

K x

PS If you're PMing patterns, can you add me to the list? I want to do a 'flower of the month' appliqué wall hanging at some stage so I'm collecting flower appliqués. Thanks in advance!

tlrnhi 03-30-2009 03:09 AM

AWESOME!! Great job!!
You did good!

Bevanger 03-30-2009 04:38 AM

You did a FANTASTIC JOB!~

sandpat 03-30-2009 04:55 AM

Ooohhhhh Tisha, that is wonderful! That is a great first attempt, heck, its a great any number attempt. I was looking at the flower petals...since they are held in place with the french knots...then the edges feel all loose and fluffy like the flower if you rub your hand over them??? Its lovely and your work is sooo beautiful!

Can you tell me the name of the pattern and where you bought it? I'd like to look at it

Patti

sewspecial 03-30-2009 05:14 AM

wonderful job!

Hope you will do more and show us.
Did you needle turn?

Thanks for your comments, maybe I will make afew of the other blocks too - you never know.!!!
The lilac one is so beautiful but there are loads of small flowers that make up the individual lilac.
Anyhow if you want copies PM me your email & I'll send them on over to you.

Thanks for your comments Loretta - yes the technique used for the Geranium gives it a sort of 3D effect.

Ah Patti

Thanks for your comments - yes the Geranium is a sort of 3D effect which I think makes it look so realistic. I'll email you the info, do you want the other 9 (I think) LOL blocks that go with it. Each one is a different flower. If I remember before I go to my next meeting I'll get the lady those made all of them to bring the quilt along for me to take pics & then I can post here for all to see. That won't be until the third Monday in the month though if you don't mind waiting until then. :D
Let me know for certain.

Thank you for your comments.

Yes I used the needle turn technique I was alittle aprehensive at first as I am very self critical of my work  But overall I'm very pleased with the end result. I'll have to do more now I think, as it's kind of addictive

So would I Loretta LOL
I may well give that one a go next, I'll need to search for some variegated fabric to give it a realistic look though. I think Makower do some - will have to do a search. I'll be thinking of you Loretta every inch of the way, wish me luck.
