I use "regular" quilt solids with 44" width. Unfortunately the wide fabrics for backings that we can purchase here don't have the quality I want for my quilts and only very few colors.
I try to find a fabric that has a high thread count like 75. The P&B brand is great for me, also the Moda Bella Solids.

Elizabeth,
I don't use a zig-zag stitch for cross hatching, the direction I follow the quilting lines is zig zag. Here is a little sketch, I hope that helps to make it clear.

Yes, I sew the length together by hand.

I have several books about the British Quilt Tradition with pictures of wholecloth quilts. Most of the books don't have patterns in it - but these quilts are my inspiration and I love to use the traditional patterns by redrawing them and make cardboard templates. Sometimes I change them a bit by adding lines and I also do my own pattern combinations. Some smaller items like the scrolls or feathers I draw freehand. You see it's a bit of everything...
