I learned (at least for beginner) this is almost impossible. The bulk of the quilt was hard to maneuver especially in center and much frustration plus ripping out. I kept telling myself this is a practice quilt and for my own use so hung in there. :? To make matters worse, I decided to be "artistic" in center and do flowers, leaves, waves. When I stopped to adjust fabric, there are obvious bobbles. But DH assures me he likes it and it looks good. I like the colors and I find as I got closer to outer edges of quilt the FMQ got more fun. But probably won't attempt this again

It's beautiful!! From a fellow Coloradan

GGinMcKinney 08-10-2011 07:37 PM

Looks wonderful to me!!
I am in process of making a queen size that will come to the floor. I will quilt it on my home machine. I am thinking wonky flowers on top and curves and such on the sides. Nothing as fancy as your detailed flower. Wow!

jean1941 08-10-2011 07:38 PM

Hope my firsts looks that good it is very pretty Did you use patterns for flowers in center of block?

Sandee 08-10-2011 07:39 PM

DH is right. You did a nice job!

timepasser 08-10-2011 07:39 PM

Hi, fellow Coloradan. I'm near Longmont.

Vanuatu Jill 08-10-2011 07:40 PM

Great job, Shirley-love your colors! I only have the guts to try small wall quilts, runners, etc on my machine! Just still trying to get the hang of it-I usually hand-quilt and hand-applique!

UglyCook 08-10-2011 07:40 PM

I think it looks great!

But I'm with you, I won't be attempting anymore large ones on my tabletop machine. lol

I started out drawing flowers (no pattern) but as I sewed, it seemed easier to just free hand it. Just took a deep breath and went for it! :-)

blueangel 08-10-2011 07:46 PM

Beautiful

Cherylsea 08-10-2011 07:49 PM

I think it is really great for a first attempt! It's very pretty.

alikat110 08-10-2011 07:54 PM

Don't give up. You did a fine job and will get better with practice.

dublb 08-10-2011 07:58 PM

We always look too closely at our own work & forget to step back to see the whole picture. You did a great job with this! I'm sure that only you see the flaws. Keep up the good work!!

cbridges22 08-10-2011 08:00 PM

Beautiful!

oma66 08-10-2011 08:08 PM

I admire the fact that you quilted this queen quilt on your home machine - and that it looks so very nice. I really like your color choices as well. I would say you deserve 5 gold stars. Great job!

LETIA 08-10-2011 08:10 PM

That is beautiful.

klarina 08-10-2011 08:14 PM

Great job. I'm having the same problem now with a quilt I'm quilting. Your post inspires me to keep going. Thanks!

shirleyd 08-10-2011 08:16 PM

Thank all of you for your encouraging and kind words. It really does make me feel better about the mistakes and it's true if you don't look real close for faults, it's not bad! You're all wonderful for being there for us inexperienced quilters. It means a lot. And I enjoy seeing all the beautiful and inspiring work you do!

Teddybear Lady 08-10-2011 08:20 PM

Looks great!

sammygirlqt 08-10-2011 08:29 PM

It turned out wonderful and I love your colors. I have done FMQ on large quilts by doing them in sections. You might consider doing that another time. You did just a great job on the whole project.

Jim's Gem 08-10-2011 09:09 PM

It looks beautiful!!!!

amyjo 08-10-2011 09:10 PM

I think it is beautiful. You are too hard on yourself. It takes a lot of practice to do FMQ and with a big quilt takes a lot of manuvering to get it quilted at all. You will get better with practice.

aorlflood 08-10-2011 09:11 PM

Once you wash and dry it, the fabric will crinkle and even you won't be able to find the mistakes.

We are our own worst critics.

I like the quilt and think it is beautiful. I've even used that same backing fabric on 2 of my own quilts (in different color combinations).

Jammin' Jane 08-10-2011 09:15 PM

It looks wonderful! And you did an awesome jog quilting it! Give yourself a pat on the back! :)

Iluv2quilt 08-10-2011 09:21 PM

You did a fine job, looks great!

MelodyWB 08-10-2011 09:28 PM

Great job..looks very pretty..when I did my first one (on reg machine) I don't LA..I did mine standing up..on my kitchen bar..I stood at the end of the bar..looking at the machine from the side..left room for the quilt on both sides to rest..I'll try to take a picture of that tomorrow..as I read this it might not make sense to you !!

debcavan 08-10-2011 09:50 PM

It is a gorgeous quilt. That is a lot of bulk to do a fancy center. You are a brave lady.

Painiacs 08-10-2011 10:43 PM

Great first time. Go smaller! Lol

coloradosky 08-10-2011 10:44 PM

Good job!

BrendaK 08-10-2011 11:03 PM

Great Job. I had a hard enough time doing SID on my sons Queen. I can't imagine what you went through. I applaud you. Love the colors. BrendaK

cheri62 08-11-2011 12:42 AM

I think it looks great, hope when I try it I do half as good.

mcdaniel023 08-11-2011 01:52 AM

It'sJustMe 08-11-2011 02:58 AM

I agree with everyone else. There's so much about your quilt that's wonderful. You are a master quilter at the beginning of her journey.

plainpat 08-11-2011 03:01 AM

I like it & the only way to learn is to go for it. Your husband is right. Nice quilt!

PattyH 08-11-2011 03:28 AM

Wow! I know that must have been a bugger! I've only fmq'd baby quilts and that was hard enough on my home machine!
