FUN Machine Applique Piece

4 Attachment(s)
I want to share some pics of a machine applique piece I just finished binding. I started it in a class in June called "I Can't Believe It's Machine Applique" with Carmen Geddes, and had such a great time learning this applique technique! The piece measures around 18" x 20" or so and I did a curved binding on it just to add a little more "movement". I did the freemotion quilting on my DSM (Juki TL98Q). Even the crosshatching in the background was done with a freemotion foot rather than a walking foot. I marked the lines first and then just went for it. It was actually easier than I thought it would be and was great practice controlling my speed/stitching as well as starting and stopping smoothly.

I'll definitely be incorporating this applique technique into some of my future works.
Hope you like it!

Just beautiful. Would love to learn that technique one day.

I am curious wendy. Does she have a book on her method? You can not tell this is machine appliqué. I need to buy a book cause I don't think she has offered a class here in reno.

This is breathtaking beautiful work.

nannyrick 07-22-2013 03:43 PM

That is absolutely stunning. What a wonderful job. Congratulations!!!

Pollytink 07-22-2013 03:48 PM

Absolutely fabulous!!! Question: What stitch did you use on the edges of the various pieces? On the green leaves it looks like a tiny invisible zz stitch, right? But on many of the other pieces, can't even see any edge stitching? An amazing piece! Congratulations!

Linda, I used a blue water soluble marker on this piece. Any water soluble marker would work since the final step is this applique method is to give it a good soaking anyway.

Polly~You are correct, the edge stitching is done with a small, narrow zig-zag using an invisible thread. When the piece is quilted and then soaked and blocked, the stitching mostly seems to disappear into fabric. All of the applique also has stitch in the ditch quilting around it on the background fabric, as close in to the edges as I could get.

What a little masterpiece! I can't tell you how much I love this!

Nope... just freemotioned it following marked lines.

very nicely done... i love the 'stamen' you did in the pink

debcavan 07-23-2013 04:21 AM

Wendy, your things are always stunning. I usually concentrate on your quilting. But your fabric choices are just as awesome and imaginative as your quilting. And your quilting is always totally outrageously wonderful.
