Your quilt is magnificent..What an heirloom quilt...
Sew your sleeve on by hand using large stitches. Cut your fabric 9 inches the length of the quilt. Sew it together and then do not turn inside out. Sew the seam allowance facing the quilt so it does not interfer with sliding the rod through the sleeve. Good luck to you and the girls...
