Oh Bummer...I have some extra fabric but like you said it may not match...;(

Ok me and friend cut our strips out today and realized I didnt have a 90 degree ruler...we tried the markings with the regular quilt rulers and decided it was too confusing and I know I would mess up when hurrying like I do. Her name is dorothy and hers is going to be so cool! I still am not sure how the blocks go together to make the rows...I thought I understood and when I started to show Dorothy and it wasnt working like I thought it would. I gave her the book to read and so i will reread that part but I think they could have done better job explaining...maybe better pictures than they did because I caught on to the rest really easily. Does anyone have pictures of how the rows get sewn together?
|
Hi Daisey - you're right, she isn't very explicit about the row joining part. I'm about to do my last few rows so I'll post some pics later showing my way - it's what I've found works best for me, I don't think there's a 'right' way but it will at least give you a jumping off point...
|
thanks, i am waiting on my 60 degree ruler and then I can play too.

Here's the link to me on You Tube joining rows. :-D :-D :-D

Awesome video!Hope your cold is getting better. I think daisey is not understanding how to make the rows, though. Setting the blocks together can be a bit confusing :).
I didn't get any cutting done over the weekend. I had a sewing marathon finishing the kaleidoscope blocks for a nieces quilt. I got all her blocks done now i just need to set them together and do borders. I've changed my plans for this Otogon flower quilt :). I was going to focus on orange and purple for a brother of mine, but I have a baby sister that needs a quilt first. Her favorite color is green so I've decided to focus on the teal and make this quilt for her. I think i'm going to hit up Walmart and get some more of the fabric so i can make most of the top out of the Octo's. Then a skinny teal border and maybe a skinny border of the original fabric. Are then any online instructions on doing the cubes? I really don't wnat to buy another book just for the cubes but I think I would love to add that to this quilt for her. It does give the quilt such nice dimensions. Hoping to start cutting tonight, maybe. |
A video! Good idea and lots of fun to have in our repetoire of resources. Thank you! <wave>

Thanks so much for the video that will help when I se wthem together but it is how to set the blocks up to sew them into the rows that is confusing...It looks like one 1/2 of one block top gets sewn to another blocks 1/2 bottom is that correct? When I get the book I will read again and after triangle are cut I guess I will just play with them to figure it out...Thanks again for making that great video for us!

Great tute/video! Hope your cold/allergies? don't slow you down too much. Thanks again. Loved seeing you.

wow :P

Thanks Julie I am a visual learner so I will probably figure it out when some of the hexs are done like you said...Thanks!

Well I cut my blocks out tonight! I've made a few mistakes and hopefully learned a lesson or three to take with me if I ever make another one after this :)
First off, I IRONED...duh, mistake. And I realized this as soon as I decided to refresh my layering memory and looked at the book. So, all it really meant is that my fabric did shift a tiny bit here and there..but I expected that anyway. Also, doing an octogon means you need EIGHT repeats...that could end up being a lot of fabric. I did use my accuquilt go to cut my triangles. Like I said before, I did get a tad of shift but I don't think it will be noticeable much at all. Using the die means my strips need to come out 6". Fortunately this fabrics repeat, or at least mine was, was about 12 1/2" so I did manage to get two strips worth of cuts from the set of repeats. I got 32 blocks cut from my 1 set of (8) repeats. Another mistake was that I was supposed to cut a strip for the little squares out of the repeats..and I didn't and of course I used ALL of the repeat for blocks. I think I'm going to figure out how many of those squares I need and maybe do some fussy cutting, mainly because I'm not going to do another set of repeats JUST to cut a 4" strip for those squares :) I'm going to go to my EQ6 now and see what I can come up with as far as size and borders go with 32 blocks. I'll probably do 5 x 6 and use the 2 extra blocks on two opposite corners in the borders. Oh, btw, my blocks will end up being 10" finished. |
You're all welcome - sorry for the sniffing, at least I controlled the dripping! Too much info? LOL
Daisey, when you get the blocks up on the wall (pinned in halves) you'll see how they nest like Julie said, otherwise I'll make another video! I could turn into a real prima donna! But this time, I'm putting make up on! I TOLD him not to film my face. Julie, you could if you wanted to use a toning fabric for the corners - you'd get a more 'separate block' effect rather than the all over OBW but it might be nice. Did you see Karen K's pink and b & w one? It gave an effect of cathedral windows - she set every alternate block with 4 OBW segments and 4 toning segments - hang on, I'll look for the link... here it is - the pink one at the bottom http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-94938-1.htm |

I think the second book IS worth getting at some stage though, if you're really into these - there are futher ideas for borders, setting etc in there as well. :-D Just had a look and ther link has changed - it used to show all the pages for the cubes and not the hexagon part, now it only shows the solid cubes and the cubes in a corner. I'm sorry I can't be more help but I don't feel comfortable doing tutes on stuff that IS in the books. Feels a bit like stealing to me. :? :-) |

I'm going to offset them differently this time for more variety in my blocks. But instead of two 6" strips I'll only do one and that will give me 16 more blocks and the other strip can be used for the squares. I have around a yard left now and allthe leftovers will make nice fillers in the rest of the top or back. This is for my baby sister and she's been sick a LOT in the last few years so I want it to be pretty special  And I DO appreciate all the help. |

I wasn't sure if there was info on the net or not :). Is the Encore book the second one that you suggest? Ok, my next question is though, is it possible to put cubes into the Octo quilts? and if so does this book go into that? I may try to find a used one on ebay or somewhere. |
The cubes come up as hexes - the Encore book is really worth having as it gives really clear pictorial instructions for all the different kinds, The third book goes into interlocking cubes etc - I haven't braved those yet, though I have the book. Katrine on here is an absolute whizz at those! One thing though - you need the 60 deg ruler for the cubes the Clearview 6" is best. It won't work with the line on your regular ruler. Wasn't sure if you had it or not with your fancy Accucut system! LOL BUt yes, check Amazon for used ones, I get a few quilty books that way. Or how about the library?
|
You looked great!
|
k3n
Thanks for the video. When I pinned my half hexes together, I just lined up the dog ears, but your method is more accurate. I learned something, so thanks for that. Cheers! |
Very Nice.

Well, I guess that means no cubes in my sisters quilt :(. It is the Octogons. If I find the book cheap enough I may still get it..I like collecting  . I don't know if I have a 60degree die for my accuquilt or not. The top I just did I started in a class 4 yrs ago and I used the special ruler (yeah, that one I JUST sold a few weeks ago cuz I was NEVER gonna do another OBW again! ) hahaha...so if I decide to do another one with hexes I will have to get another ruler.... |
Thank you so much for the video. I learned a lot. Love the fabric great blocks. I am hooked.
|
You're welcome everyone... for a show off like me, it was fun! I might even do more when I've got something interesting to share... Julie, I don't think you can do cubes with your accucut so looks like you NEED another ruler!

I had about a yard left and ended up cutting the short sideways repeats in order to get my square pieces. For the squares I didn't need 8 repeats, just 4. So now I have a few scraps I can use to add some color to the borders and I have a selvedge edge piece that is 8" wide and about 45" long. It doesnt' quite show the entire original repeat, but its pretty close and the general idea is there :). I think I will clean up my scrappy mess and start sewing tonight!
I need to work on a block swap I am doing. Not behind but need to get back on track. I also need to sew the kaleidoscope blocks together for my nieces quilt top :). It's main color palette is purple and yellow. |

Busy busy Julie! Glad you made your limited fabric work - quilters are nothing if not resourceful! :-D
OK here's my pieced top - it's 65" x 41" It's not 'done' I have an embellishment idea with applique... might start that now! :D |
k3n,
Ooooh gorgeous!! I can't wait to see what you come up with for your applique idea. |
k3n, that turned out really pretty!!! I'm glad to see the green working with that as that is what I'm going to end up doing also...my sisters favorite color is green :)
|
I'm deep in applique land now! Having great fun playing with my scrappity scraps! The inner border is a very dark purple BTW, doesn't show up well on the pic.
|
That's gorgeous k3n, hanging out to see everyone elses :-D
|
That is so beautiful, I can't stop looking at it. I am working on my first one. I am new to quilting but I was so amazed by the OBW I had to try. I am learning as I go. Thanks, can't wait to see the next one.
