I also have a question...do you cut the excess off now...those little ears so it reduces the bulk a little or doesn't it make enough difference?

I need to shop for some border fabric. I don't have enough left over to use as a border as I hoped to do.

That turned out really pretty so far!!!!

wildyard 03-16-2011 07:56 PM

It's really beautiful, great block placement!

k3n 03-17-2011 08:06 AM

Elaine that is fabulous! Re the dog ears, I don't bother cutting mine off. Except the ones that get sliced when I'm trimming the pointy bits top and bottom to square up.

i just rec'd my fabric to do my obw.. i had some different material months ago and did not like the results.. i think this is going to work....

quiltykitty 03-18-2011 08:12 PM

Colleen, I think that will be stunning. Nice choice.

colleen53 03-19-2011 06:08 AM

ty very much.. i am hoping so too !

Deb watkins 03-19-2011 07:04 AM

I wish I wasn't such a chicken with this. I would love to do one. Just can't seem to get this.....which is frustrating as I am sure once I do it, it will seem so easy. Woner why I have the mental block? (no pun intended)

i have seen your work and i am sure if you had the book you could do this..
after i purchased the book it all seemed to go together with the help of the board for questions.. I just didn't like my first fabric choice so I didn't continue on with that one.. this one I am more excited about.. once you get that fabric cut and lined up its a breeze..
COME ON.. YOU CAN DO IT.. i haven't cut this fabric yet.. maybe later today i will ... lol

Do you have the book Deb? It really isnt difficult with the book, the illustrations and instructions are just so clear. You will be surprised how easy you find it to do one.

tangledthread 03-19-2011 09:23 AM

You are all so talented! I just loved reading the posts and looking at your pics! I can't wait to start a OBW!

wildyard 03-19-2011 09:56 AM

LOL You are not alone Deb, there are lots of us clutching our fabric and fearing to take those first steps!!

colleen53 03-19-2011 01:12 PM

it won't happen by 'CLUTCHING' .. you have to trust and lay it flat and rub it smooth and then CUT!!!!
come on ladies.. jump in and get those machines humming !

That will work great! Nice big print, limited colour palette to be 'spilt out' and lots of swirls and curves in the petals and leaves - perfect! :-D

And Deb, I agree with Katrine - get the book, read it through once first then get the fabric, book open at the side of you, follow the instructions step by step - easy as pie! And post your progress and we'll all interfere - I mean, HELP!

Post by "feffertim" >actually you can put a triangle on all four corners and make a square. Thats what I did, and I really like the look <.

Yours are Octagons, if I'm not mistaken, hence why you CAN put triangles on all 4 corners. The hex with 6 sections doesn't have 4 corners the same way. Hope this helps someone.
Best wishes.

How do you quilt a OBW?
I am not good at FMQ but am considering an all over wavy pattern of quilting. Maybe SID around each hexagon but that is a lot of stitching.... What do you do? I have seen a lot of OBW pictures but cannot tell just how they are quilted.

LAB55 03-25-2011 06:19 AM

Beautiful !! ;-)

itsmesuzq 03-25-2011 06:43 AM

You guys are off to a great start!! I'm going to bookmark this thread so I can watch your progress. I love the fabric.

cozycrafter 03-25-2011 08:00 AM

Relax and you will have a blast, each one is a masterpiece I tryed for months just looking at everyones quilts, messed up and when I got the book it was easy. There is a tutorial you tube about how to connect the blocks that was very helpfull, but you do need the book. It is so fun, so just enjoy, it is a very forgiving pattern, there is so much motion you don't notice the small stuff. No need to clutch just sew. Please post pics!

I wouldn't SITD the hexes personally - the beauty of these is the all over design NOT the individual blocks so you don't want to emphasise them. I generally do an all over FMQ design, just a meander is fine, or swirls, or something on the theme of the fabric. (For eg on my Turning Over A New Leaf one, I did FMQ leaves.) Then I SITD round the centre part and quilt the border with feathers, leaves, vines, etc etc again trying to enhance the theme of the quilt. :D :-D

kimscruzer 03-30-2011 03:58 AM

I have been wanting to try the OBW. I think they are awesome and magical . I will definitely be watching this closely. Maybe I will build up enough confidence to actually do one.

gramto4 03-30-2011 05:20 AM

Thanks K3n. That's what I will try - an all over pattern on the center, probably just wavy lines and swirls or such in the borders. I'm struggling with FMQ but even with a few bobbles, it doesn't look too bad. Like I wanted it that way!

Hey those bobbles are a design decision! 8-) And don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Actually in my early days of FMQ I practised meandering on these - the first full quilt I did on the machine was an OBW. They're great because they're so busy, they don't show the bobbles, errrr, 'DESIGN DECISIONS!

I am liking this better now that I have my borders on it. I added the borders because it will go on our Murphy bed that my husband is making.I am a bit worried about quilting it though...never done FMQ except a sample I tired once...not pretty. Now to get the batting and continue on... :?

Looking back at some of the messages posted here, I see that Katrine and k3n have used SITD on the cubes in their quilts. My question is "Have you used any other method on the cubes?" I have the Cubed book, but it doesn't show any quilting. I'm thinking what to do with my quilt. Here's the link to mine. It's near the bottom.

The actual quilting is what always stumps me. I look at all those beautiful quilts posted here and wonder how on earth they ever come up with such perfect designs. Could always fall back on meander for the hexes, but not the cubes.

I hope all of you are having a wonderful weekend. I am.

I love the ridhness of these jewel tones. Very pretty

Elaine that turned out beautiful! I actually learned to FMQ on my first OBW as I didn't know how else to quilt it!

Re the cubes, yes I always SITD to emphasise the 3D effect but I have also seen quilts where the FMQ just continues over them. The SITD IS a pain, especially hand sewing in all the ends, but I always do it because it really makes them pop. :-D

I prefer just to SID with cubes too, so that they are prominent from the hexes - and even the big interlocking ones I've done (Ice Follies and Chain ReAction) I did SID.

I am not keen on the ones illustrated in the books which are quilted over as part of the overall quilting, I think they lose alot of the 3D effect.

I normally quilt the obws from the back too as it is far easier to see where you've been and are going - so once the cubes are SID, I can see them clearly and that way can avoid going over them.

Your quilt is beautiful Kitty, love your design, and the cubes are wonderful!

Ok I started sewing some of my blocks together today and I see they are going to come together quickly,,,well as quickly as possible for a lady who works 45 hrs a week and long arm quilts for business on the side Ha Ha...hows everyone else doing?

daisey 04-09-2011 05:21 PM

wow yours is turning out beautiful, since I am using the same fabric I am hoping mine will be as beautiful! I am a long arm quilter so I will probaly meander or do swirls...not too much of a design so it wont take away from the block designs,,,

pjnesler 04-09-2011 05:23 PM

The Fastest design wall you can get is to get a nice big piece of flanel and some tacks for bulletin boards, and hang it on the wall, doesn't take many tacks, they leave very small holes when you take them down. Your quilt pieces may stick to the flanel on their own, or you may need a pin or two, but you will have a good view of your work in progress, and it's great art! ;) ;)

daisey 04-09-2011 05:29 PM

Thanks I plan on making one with flannel just not sure what to use for the back...probably cardboard or something...cement walls so tacks wont work..

Get a queen size (or any size actually) cotton batting. sew a sleeve in both ends and put a curtain rod through one end. Now put two to four large 3M hanging hooks on the cement and hang your curtain rod from them. The bottom sleeve is for you to put another heavier curtain rod in to hold the batting taut, but it's not strictly necessary. I just found it easier.

daisey 04-09-2011 05:48 PM

I could do that with either batting or flannel i bet,,,I have both..
great idea! We are finishing our basement this year so that will work fine until its finished,,,Thanks!

Here is my neices kaleidoscope quilt. It will get a skinny yellow border then a wider border of the print. I will post one more after I get it finished and quilted.

I STILL have two basket quilt tops to finish for *gulp* Easter  . Blocks are done, one top is half finished. They are being sashed and put on point and i have NEVER done point...lol. Soooooo I am learning as I go!

I have FINISHED all the octogons from the floral master fabric  . I still have a few sitting here getting ready to iron but that is it. I will start sorting them and placing them on my design wall in the next few days

daisey 04-26-2011 07:45 PM

very pretty I have not done a kaleidascope quilt, just started a whack and stack and a OBW..you must have alot of time to quilt ,,,last week I counted how many quilts I am in the middle of and its 27,,,but slowly they get done..I work full time and long arm quilt on the side so my own work comes around slowly! Congrats on the beautiful quilts youve done!

k3n 04-27-2011 02:23 AM

That is really pretty and fresh looking Julie - now get cracking on those floral master octos! (she nags, with her top sitting here STILL not quilted!)LOL!

justlooking 04-27-2011 02:41 AM
