I was in a shop some time ago and saw a bed size quilt finished with the large stitches. The background blocks were white and the stitching was in red. It was eye catching. The lady in the shop called it "primative quilting". I've seen a lot of antique quilts but have never seen stitching like that. I think she just made up the name but you might try a google search for that term.

Hello Barbara, I really like your pillow and will try the "big stitch" method one of these days.

Susy 06-21-2010 03:18 PM

Never heard of it but I sure do love the look of it!

Lynnejean 06-21-2010 04:03 PM

Looks great to me!

MadQuilter 06-21-2010 04:04 PM

Margie 06-21-2010 04:24 PM

I absolutely love it

JKMom 06-21-2010 05:13 PM

I like to hand quilt, but I've never ever been a perfectionist about it. My stitches used to be tiny, but as my eyes have grown older  my stitches became larger. I guess I big stitch quilt now. I love the look. I do primitive embroidery using the same stitch technique on borders to personalize.

Your pillow is so attractive in its simplicity.

littlehud 06-21-2010 06:17 PM

I love that look. Great job. Your pillow is great. Thanks for sharing.

sewnsew 06-21-2010 06:25 PM

MN QUILTLADY 06-21-2010 07:06 PM

bettyjo 06-21-2010 07:31 PM

OHH I love it. Boy I got a long list of things to try by looking at all the work shown on here.

watson's mom 06-21-2010 07:33 PM

Beautiful..love the big stitches. Never heard of 'big stitch quilting' before but it looks great on your pillow. Thank you for sharing.

earthwalker 06-21-2010 07:41 PM

Looks fantastic...there is also an interesting thread on "Turkey Tracks" - which here we call "Fly Stitch" and also known as "Crow Feet" http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-26051-1.htm - you may want to check it out, as like the big stitch, could add that extra bit of interest to a piece.

I recently purchased a Singer Featherweight machine from a quilter. We had quite the visit at her home. This is where I first saw big stitch quilting. She was working on a pink lap or crib quilt with white stitching.

I have trouble with arthritis so I can't do the hand quilting I would like to do. However, I think big quilting might work if I don't do it all the time.

rootyr 06-22-2010 03:50 AM

I love it! very nice!

anicra 06-22-2010 04:41 AM

moneymndr 06-22-2010 05:49 AM

I think it looks wonderful!! Great job.

mdollar 06-22-2010 06:10 AM

It is beautiful! I love the colors also!

I did something of that sort on a quilt I am putting together of different kinds of houses- one is a bee hive, one is a bird house, etc. I have had stitched it all sort of embroidery style and left the edges to do their thing. I love the way it looks.

Thank you all so much for your kind comments. I'm afraid if you went too close to the stitches with a ruler, you would find they are not all as even as they might look.
It can be quite quick to do - if you don't keep undoing your work, which I confess I had to do on the smaller areas, to make the stitches finish in the right place when coming to a seam. I also found it better to start and finish on the back and not the front, as I was afraid of making holes in the front with the thicker cotton.
I do like the look the bigger contrasting stitches give it though, thanks for looking.

Tinabodina 06-22-2010 06:26 AM

I love the look. It makes the pillow have a "finished" look. Good job and thanks for sharing

AnnieF 06-22-2010 06:34 AM

I have done my share of "big stitch" quilting. I love it. You don't get crazy trying to make the tiny stitches and the stitching goes so much quicker. I made one black wholecloth quilt where I just used the big stitch and circle stencils to overlap circles in 10 or 12 different colored cotton thread. It turned out beautifully.

tryitall 06-22-2010 07:43 AM

I had a friend that did all of her quilts that way. I love it. Never tried it tho.

mdollar 06-22-2010 08:16 AM

I can't find that episode on Simply Quilts. That is a strange site- HGTV. I saw a beautiful Gingerbread Quilt that I wanted instructions for and I can't find where to get them on the site. Any help would be appreciated.

Quilt4u 06-22-2010 08:19 AM

I love it.

judyjo 06-22-2010 08:35 AM

Debo 06-22-2010 09:07 AM

I've never heard of big stitches but I love the way they look. I am definetly going to try this.

Katsie 06-22-2010 09:40 AM

Barbara,
I have also done the big stitch quilting. I read about it in a magaazine years ago. Mine were done around 2000. I did this technique on several lap quilts. I did my stitching in black and I think it gives the quilt and old fashioned look.

kdid82 06-22-2010 11:23 AM

loved the big stitch look, think it would look great on a quilt

cbuchanan 06-22-2010 11:41 AM

I've been quilting 10 years and can you believe, I have yet to finish the quilt I made in my first class sessions. It's very rustic and not my type of quilt. Since I hand quilt, I felt very discouraged to think about the time it would take me to hand quilt a standard size quilt. One lady at the quilt shop says, "Why not quilt it with pearl cotton and do big stitches?" As a novice, that certainly made since BUT I have found it is taking me forever to hand quilt it this way. The main problem I have is that I can't get several stitches on my needle at a time. thus, I do one stitch at a time and unfortunately, I decided for the background to do a 1" grid throughout the entire quilt. Maybe someday I may have a great, great, great granddaughter who will want to finish the blasted thing. It's my never-ending WIP.

mygirl66 06-22-2010 11:48 AM

I love the big stiches! I have seen a few quilts out there with the big stiches, and its really cool, just like your pillow! I am a hand quilter also, so when you can switch things up a little, its a good thing!Awesome job!

kwilter 06-22-2010 12:11 PM

Love that BIG STITCH! I searched the web for machine doing sashiko and discovered that Baby Lock has a brand-new entry on the market which does sashiko exclusively. I understand, however, it is extremely pricey....I think I'll wait 'til it becomes more affordable...on my "wish list" for now....(check it out on You Tube.)

rosieret 06-22-2010 12:24 PM

I LOVE IT. Gives me courage.

Wings 06-22-2010 12:30 PM

Love it - so fresh and vibrant. Yes there is a Tiger Tape for big stitches, although I found it a bit unwieldy on the fabric as the tape was rather stiff. Love the colour combinations you have used on this!

I have never seen it and I love it. My goal was always keep them small, now I have to rethink. Yours is really super.
