Wanted to share a recent cushion cover I quilted. I wanted to hand quilt it and decided to big stitch quilt it, as I like the embroidered effect it gives, but when I searched on this board for techniques came up with nothing. I found trapunto, but that is not quite the same.
After searching the web, I used coton a broder No.16 and the stitches are two and a bit to the inch, with the space about half the size of the stitch. I would really appreciate any feedback if there is better way of doing it, but having started hand quilting after reading all the encouraging posts from hand quilters on this board, I'm afraid I've got the bug! Cushion cover big stitch quilted. |
I love the look of the big stitch! Great job!
I love it! Great job. The quilting really enhances your work!
I like the big stitch look. How did you get your stitches so even? When it's small, differences in size aren't discernable, but in this it would be.
I haven’t done it yet, but I really like the rustic look of big stitch quilting. I think I will try it on my funky chicken quilt. Here is a post from a blogger I follow that does it, I think she may even have a tute on there if you poke around.

That is fantastic. It really goes with the red and black fabric too. Nice job. And all this time I have been fighting to make mine smaller.....
Your stitching adds a lot of character to the cover. I really like it.
I love the look! Yup, with quilting just about anything goes and we get a creative license with it!

I am impressed. That looks great. I have tried hand quilting and hated it, but this looks fun.
I love it - will need to try this now!! :)
I like it. That looks really cool.
No feedback other than it is beautiful. I don't do any kind of hand work.
I really like the big stitch look. It adds so much to a quilt.
Maybe I could actually handquilt this way!LOL I think this was about the size I was doing when Mom tried to teach me to handquilt, but it wasn"t what she had in mind! Hers was more 12 to an inch, never could do that.
I like it and it mucst be faster!!! LOL
My niece does big stitch on all her quilts and they're gorgeous. I love your pillow. I think the big stitch quilting adds to the design.

Beautiful and very nicely done! Thanks for sharing.
Oh, that looks marvellous! I really like it!
That really looks nice. Big stitch certainly has a place in quilting. It especially looks great on homespuns, plaids and the thimbleberries type of patterns.
How neat is that?! Great look!
I have never seen it done that way before but I like it
I love the big stitch you've done. Now I'm wanting to try that. It looks so great on your pillow.
Would you share the pattern for your pillow? |
I love the big stitch now after seeing how you did yours. I'll have to give this technique a try! :)
If I remember correctly Billie Lauder did an episode of this on Simply Quilts years ago. Not sure if HGTV still has her episodes or not, but maybe Billie's site would have something on it.
Really like what you have done with it Barbara. Beautiful. |
similar to Sashiko.
That is really nice. I am going to have to try that!
Never heard of it but it looks beautiful
You did a fabulous job!
I've never read anything on big stitch quilting either, but I have used that technique on a couple scrappy quilts. I used embroidery floss, and a large eye needle. I like the idea that the stiching is really part of the design. Come to think of it ... Better Homes & Gardens featured a wall hanging with big stitches,,, maybe last year... Anyway, Great looking work! |

Really like what you have done with it Barbara. Beautiful. The HGTV's Simply Quilts' episode 121 by Billie Lauder showed how Billie did it. |
This looks beautiful, and would definitely be faster.
I bought some Tiger Tape on Saturday to help me make more even hand stitches, even with regular (smaller) stitching. I'm pretty sure they had some specifically made for Big Stitch quilting (although you could probably use the kind I bought and just skip every other mark). |
