I started this in September and had to take a 3 week break while my machine was in the shop. The past few weeks have been very slow going as I find the little 9 patch construction very tedious. But, I finally finished enough 9 patches to put it up on my design wall and I have to say, it looks even better than I imagined. I am so excited to finish this.

I am leaning towards a border color of either pink, aqua or a purple as those are my favorite colors from this quilt. If you are making one of these, I'd love to see what you have done so far. It is nice to see other people's fabric and color choices. This is my first rainbow themed quilt but I have lots more imagined in my head so there will be many more to come. None quite as intense as this one though!!!

You will notice it looks a little funny in 2 spots and that is because I already attached 2 different sets of blocks together to see how my seams were matching and up and to make sure everything was going to nest properly. I think it will come together pretty well.

I love your quilt. Thank you for inspiring. I can't tell, are you using all solids? I would love to make one. I am taking a picture of yours to inspire and motivate me. It must be difficult with such small pieces.

farscapegal 01-12-2013 11:52 AM

That is going to be so gorgeous. I can't wait to see it all done up.

tesspug, that is a great idea about the piano keys. I used that on one of my first quilts and really liked the look. I think that is definately a good way to go on this.

This uses 54 different batiks, mostly from Hoffman. I have also used 8 different white on white fabrics. One of the biggest tips I would give someone wanting to do this quilt is to make sure you pick a background fabric that is sturdy. Some of my white on white is very thin and flimsy and starch didn't really give it any more body. My thicker fabrics were much easier to work with.

Thanks for the encouraging words.

Here is a close up view of my fabrics that shows them better. A few have prints but the rest are the batik look. They are all crinkly looking in the first photo as they have been prewashed but not pressed in this photo. the second 2 photos are the collection of selvage strips after I had cut all my fabrics.

What size are your 9 patches?

I've been making 3.5" 9 patches as leaders and enders and have quite a shoe box full :)

mighty 01-12-2013 01:11 PM

Just so beautiful!!!!!!!

AngelinaMaria 01-12-2013 01:14 PM

The tiny 9 patches finish at 1.5 inches!!! Each square in that 9 patch finishes at 1/2 inch. The full size 9 patch and the coordinating shoo-fly bocks finish at 4.5 inches. There are 221 main blocks. The quilt will finish at around 75 x 85 inches depending on border choices. I am leaning towards the suggestion of piano keys.

red-warrior 01-12-2013 01:43 PM

Bright and beautiful! Please post when all done so I can see it finished!
