I blame DH. He's been surfing Craig's List for a long-arm quilting machine to go with the quilting frame we got a couple of weeks ago. The frame is long enough to handle a king sized quilt if I ever get that ambitious. Anyhow, while he was surfing, he ran across an old sewing machine that he knew I wanted, and showed me the listing. It didn't come with a cabinet or other attachments, but the decals are nice. I'm pretty sure the motor isn't the original, because it looks new. It does work fine, although I haven't sewn anything on it yet. The colors are dull because I haven't cleaned it up yet.

This is a machine that could either be a treadle or electric, and it shouldn't be hard to change between the two. According to the serial number, it was probably built in 1920, making it around 90 years old. I hope to look so good when I'm ninety!

Beautiful....keep the husband and the machine.....

Prism99 03-12-2011 04:23 PM

Be sure to research cleaning before starting. I think baby oil is safe to use on the older machines. Many of the newer, seemingly "safe" cleaners will strip the shine off the finish.

Awesome find! Such a beauty!

Billy has a great tute on this one. It's around page 46 or so of the vintage sewing section.
I did it with that same machine and it's now fantastic!!
I'm happy for you! :D:D

I heartily agree. My DH told me this evening that we will get whatever I need for my quilting. He meant it, too. I have no intention of going overboard. :)

That is a beautiful machine and it was so nice of your DH to find it for you.

The jury is still out, but that husband of yours might just be a keeper.

Hi Jlm, I have a RedEye ( like yours) dating back to 1916, a Tiffany / Gingerbread 1915, a memphis/Sphinx 1897 and a Painted Rose 1891. They all work and I love collecting them. Good luck in finding more. Singer has a great website to help you date these machines.

thegypsy1968 03-13-2011 06:35 AM

She is a beauty and I agree I could only hope to look that photogenic when I am 90!...Thanks for sharing!

katlady 03-13-2011 06:57 AM

WOW!!! What a beautiful machine.

ShirlinAZ 03-13-2011 08:02 AM

Oh, lucky you! It looks like it may be in the base of it's original portable box, is that right?

ssgramma 03-13-2011 08:05 AM

She is very pretty!

No, the base it's in is not the original, but I don't care. I am debating about whether to convert it back to treadle or use it as an electric. Either way, I have cabinets it will fit in. My original singer treadle is a model 27 with sphinx decals which are not in very good shape. I may swap it out for my new lady.

Because she's a Red Head, I may call her Lucy.

quiltqueen61 03-13-2011 08:46 AM

I have one just like it, it was my grandmothers, I was told at one time it was a treadle made over into a portable, wouldn't want to lug it very far, it's quite heavy, still works, only thing I think may have been replaced is the cord. Wanted to sell it but no one here wants it. If you look at the plate on your machine there is a number and some letters I think, if you call Singer they will give you the exact date and where it was made. Hubby made a great find.

I did look up the serial number - the number was released in December of 1919, one of 50,000. However, I can't assume it was actually made in December of 1919, more likely it was sometime in 1920. The motor and belt look new, so it may be a very recent conversion.

It's more difficult to sell a machine online, probably because of the weight of these machines. They are HEAVY, and often damaged in shipping if not packed properly. If I had known that you had one to sell, I would have definitely been interested, but now I have one. I consider it a keeper.
