I blame DH. He's been surfing Craig's List for a long-arm quilting machine to go with the quilting frame we got a couple of weeks ago. The frame is long enough to handle a king sized quilt if I ever get that ambitious. Anyhow, while he was surfing, he ran across an old sewing machine that he knew I wanted, and showed me the listing. It didn't come with a cabinet or other attachments, but the decals are nice. I'm pretty sure the motor isn't the original, because it looks new. It does work fine, although I haven't sewn anything on it yet. The colors are dull because I haven't cleaned it up yet.
This is a machine that could either be a treadle or electric, and it shouldn't be hard to change between the two. According to the serial number, it was probably built in 1920, making it around 90 years old. I hope to look so good when I'm ninety! |
Oh I just love the husbands who support our creativity and love for all things quilting :)

What a great find!

Beautiful...husband is a keeper!
Really looks nice! I love all the designs on it, still brilliant colors after all these years!
Super looking machine and super hubby. Lucky you!
Beautiful....keep the husband and the machine.....
Be sure to research cleaning before starting. I think baby oil is safe to use on the older machines. Many of the newer, seemingly "safe" cleaners will strip the shine off the finish.
Awesome find! Such a beauty!
Lovely, enjoy your new toy!
She looks fabulous!!! By the way, the only way I want to still be around when im 90 is if I don't still have to do laundry. Lol
What a gorgeous machine and the hubby is definitely a keeper!
Billy has a great tute on this one. It's around page 46 or so of the vintage sewing section.
I did it with that same machine and it's now fantastic!! I'm happy for you! :D:D |
Very nice! Nice hubby too!

The jury is still out, but that husband of yours might just be a keeper.

Hi Jlm, I have a RedEye ( like yours) dating back to 1916, a Tiffany / Gingerbread 1915, a memphis/Sphinx 1897 and a Painted Rose 1891. They all work and I love collecting them. Good luck in finding more. Singer has a great website to help you date these machines.

She is a beauty and I agree I could only hope to look that photogenic when I am 90!...Thanks for sharing!
WOW!!! What a beautiful machine.
Oh, lucky you! It looks like it may be in the base of it's original portable box, is that right?
She is very pretty!

Because she's a Red Head, I may call her Lucy. |
I have one just like it, it was my grandmothers, I was told at one time it was a treadle made over into a portable, wouldn't want to lug it very far, it's quite heavy, still works, only thing I think may have been replaced is the cord. Wanted to sell it but no one here wants it. If you look at the plate on your machine there is a number and some letters I think, if you call Singer they will give you the exact date and where it was made. Hubby made a great find.

It's more difficult to sell a machine online, probably because of the weight of these machines. They are HEAVY, and often damaged in shipping if not packed properly. If I had known that you had one to sell, I would have definitely been interested, but now I have one. I consider it a keeper. |
