This is what I've been laboring on for the past four months. A little here and a little there. Sometimes, it got the best of me, but I think I've semi-tamed the beast. There have been so many OBW, kaleidscope, and 3D quilts in the shows I have attended and they really caught my eye. I didn't want to invest too much money in this, just in case I goofed. I found my focus fabric at Joann's and got the book at a quilt store. And I needed that book! Even with it, I managed to mess up some cubes.

I think I like this layout, but will leave it on the design wall for several days. I may decide something needs to be changed. There will be a solid black inner border, then the focus fabric for the outer border. I may use the black and gold between the two borders, but have not decided yet. I may also put some hexagons in the black border. There are some pictures in the book with that done and it really is neat. Whatever fabric is left after the top is done will be used as backing.

Oh, and that design wall? I made it last week from two sheets of styrofoam type stuff found in home improvement stores. I had to get them cut to fit in the car. At home, I used Gorilla Tape to put them back together to a 6' x 6' size. I used a big roll of that Gorilla Tape! I've got quilt batting covering it and that is taped to the back. It is attached to the top with heavy double sided tape. And there is a window behind it.

Thanks for looking.

I gotta try one of the cubes... this is great

jljack 02-13-2011 03:41 PM

I'm gonna be a "wet blanket" and say....

I like these quilts better without the cubes. I don't get the purpose of them at all. But that's just my stupid opinion!! :-) I like the colors in yours. Very nice.

charismah 02-13-2011 03:47 PM

Oh I JUST LOVE IT!

moreland 02-13-2011 03:50 PM

I like the relief from the busy pattern that the cubes give to the quilt top. Isn't it great that we all like different things--sure makes our world a more interesting place.
Great quilt.

I think its pretty cool looking. What book does this come out of? I have a one block wonder book but don't remember it having the cube in it.

sandyo 02-13-2011 04:16 PM

I like how the blocks turned out different colors.

earthwalker 02-13-2011 04:16 PM

Looks fantastic....I am seriously going to do one of these one day. Maybe without the cubes for mine, but I have a step-son who is really keen on the geometry of the whole thing, he is definitely getting the cubes.

I am looking for a user friendly book....which one did you use, and would you recommend it?

shadoh 02-13-2011 04:19 PM

I love the OBW quilts. They always turn out fabulous! Thanks for sharing, especially the pictures of the original fabrics!

PJisChaos 02-13-2011 09:00 PM

I am not real into the OBW quilts but, this is so awesome!! I love the cubes, really breaks up the design and gives my brain a chance to rest. What a great job

sharon b 02-13-2011 09:08 PM

Love it

sharoney 02-13-2011 09:11 PM

Yeah, the cubes are too cool! gotta try that.

Katrine 02-13-2011 11:11 PM

Well done, it looks good - that focus fabric has a lovely colour mix and has given a good mix of blocks. It's a good idea to let them "stew" for a while on the wall - I always do it. The cubes are fun aren't they?

Janie Q 02-13-2011 11:13 PM

Wow! Fantastic. You can be really proud of that one.

Babs194068 02-14-2011 03:22 AM

Nice!

obie2 02-14-2011 04:10 AM

I love it. I must gather up the nerve to try cubes. I think they look great with the quilt. Your focus fabric is fantastic, too.

JulieB 02-14-2011 04:40 AM

love your quilt and the blocks! Which book did you use? I'm getting very intrigued as well by all the OBW's I'm seeing.

janiesews 02-14-2011 05:35 AM

Nice job! They are fascinating to see the focus fabric and then the designs that emerge from making the blocks and cubes.

Kutnso 02-14-2011 06:12 AM

Wow!!! I would never have believed that you could do that with the original fabric. Terrific job!!!!
Congrats, Kutnso

indycatcarol 02-14-2011 06:15 AM

Very pretty. My DIL does a lot of OBW. I have a pattern for a "cube" quilt but haven't tried it yet. I have not seen one with the long cubes like some of yours are.

GladGrams 02-14-2011 06:38 AM

Terrific! Love it!

reach for the stars 2 02-14-2011 06:40 AM

The cubes look great in it. I got to try those.

Dianne1 02-14-2011 07:20 AM

IDquilter 02-14-2011 09:23 AM
