Fabulous quilt studio

Lucky you, love your room and I am really impressed with your roll of batting above the board. Great idea!
Now I know why all your quilts look so great, what a fabulous sewing room and it would be so relaxing to sew in there. Did you do it all yourself great room.

What wonderful lighting! Everything longs so handy. I am envious.
Michael, I think your idea is great. Picture shows a nice workable space for quilting.
Great sewing room! Very manly with all the wood
I just love your room and all the warm, natural wood in there. I would kill for this kind of space...not really, but I am pretty jealous.
It must be really nice to have room enough for a sewing room. I have to use our living room so it usually looks like a diaster in there, especially when I set up a "church dinner table, an ironing board, and all my boxes of fabric stuffed in a corner. Just hope company doesn't show up.
Love your studio michael. And now I see what you described recently for hanging the roll of batting. I hadn't been able to "picture" it from the description. Thank You for sharing.
Michael your space is great. Love your machines and good luck on your quilting. It is really a lot of fun.

hey michael,
Yes it is a wonderful thing to have a large surface. I am afraid though that your OSB might bow since it is hanging out over the edge of your island so far. OSB is made of soft woods is known to bend after a while w/o being supported. I made my own Big Board to lay on top of my ironing board for ironing yardages of fabric. I made the board out of 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood 20 x 60". I then covered with 2 layers of warm and natural batting, then a layer of regular muslin. Then finished off with the silver sided fabric. All this was stapled to the back of the board so it was all snug and smooth surface. This sits on top of my ironing board all the time for ironing, pressing, a work surface, etc. I love it. Chris |
Also love the batting rack!
:hunf: I am having some sewing room envy here. It is so neat. I am going to look online for a used island. Great idea. thanks for showing us yours..

Nice idea---that turned out great. Ok, what is OSB board?
Love the room and love your idea. The table came out so great.
You are very creative. Love your ideas.
I also love your sewing room...much neater than mine BUT I especially love the knotty pine walls, reminds me of up north before moving to SW Florida.
Great idea! It looks like you have a lot of space in your sewing room.
I love your idea, and your sewing room. God bless
Your sewing room is awesome!
Somehow you managed to create a very masculine looking quilting studio.
More power to 'ya!! Great looking! And very tidy. 8-) |

Chris[/quote] What is the silver sided material you used? Is it the same as Insulbrite? Or something else? |

Had that happen, found 3 kittens in my batting. But I have an old pooltable as a base and put an 8x4 board on top as a cutting table. Ofcourse you can only do that in Hawaii and I have it in my Patio set up. I also use old Iceboxes for storage of materials ect. I like your room a lot, now I am trying to figure out how to make my OPEN patio like that! 0:)

That is a great idea. Love the space.

I used a bathroom vanity I found at a yard sale for a dollar. It had drawers on one side and 2 doors on the other. I had a drawer handle on the drawers that would just hold a pair of scissors. DH put a back on the cabinet with some paneling. Since it lacked height, he put together a frame out of ply wood with casters for it to move around. He put on locking casters so it would not roll if I wanted. Then he rigged a frame for the top so it would not sag. Then DH used smooth dense particle board he varnished for a top. The particle board is smoother than strand board. You can get particle board with a rounded edge too. He put one piece of the particle board on the top then he hinged a piece to the back of the cabinet. There were fold up legs so it would set level. Then we attached an ironing board end to one end of the cabinet it had a leg hinged on it, too. This all folded out huge and stored pretty tight. We were not able to move it with us during our move. I think I like the idea of the top to be a surface I can iron on for next time.

Just love all the sewing rooms.
Nice work space!! I am jealous.....especially of the big TV! Hahaha!
Nice Room! What is OSB?
Love your spacious sewing area. You are a very organized and pay attention to detail by the looks of what you have accomplished, great job.
Mirrors bring in a lot of light, and we also replaced our neon tubes with tubes called "daylight", now it is just like being outside in the bright sunshine, when I'm in my sewing room. Whenever I get feeling a little tired during the day, can walk into that room, and voila I'm totally awake again, gives me a boost of energy to go for a longer time. Thanks for sharing all your pics, they are lovely to look at. Highly recommend those bulbs, and they are also available in lightbulbs. |

I then bought a piece of damaged OSB board from my hardware store for $10 and secured it to the top of the island. After that I purchased a large cutting mat from Joann's when they were having their 50% sale and created a cutting board at the perfect height. :) The other bonus....STORAGE under the cutting board. I store my serger, books, and other notions under there keeping my stations nice and tidy. Craigslist and the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store are a good place to find old kitchen island for little to no money. I searched for on in my area and found one for $25. For my NEXT project this weekend I want to make my own ironing board so it can accomedate a full width of fabric. So I'm going to make one with OSB - Batting - and Canvas. And it can easily sit on top of my cutting station. Space saver AND time saver now that I will be able to iron more cloth at once. :) |
:-D Great idea. My husband has a pool table and when he does not use it (which is most of the time. ;-) he covers it with plywood and then I cover it with a sheet. Bingo! I have a great table to cut on and it is just the right height.

I like your ideas. My friend made a dual usage one by putting a piano hinge so she could drop one side. It had legs to prop up for extra support. I like the idea of the extra storage you have. Looks like you have plenty of space in your room. Jan

OSB is oriented strand board - you can also get particle board
Particle board is smoother and denser. OSB is kind of glued up wood chips |
A man cave any smart woman would envy
