We recently moved into a house that had a 50's kitchen. We remodeled it and I was fortunate enough to rescue the old kitchen island.

I then bought a piece of damaged OSB board from my hardware store for $10 and secured it to the top of the island. After that I purchased a large cutting mat from Joann's when they were having their 50% sale and created a cutting board at the perfect height. :)

The other bonus....STORAGE under the cutting board. I store my serger, books, and other notions under there keeping my stations nice and tidy.

Craigslist and the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store are a good place to find old kitchen island for little to no money. I searched for on in my area and found one for $25.

For my NEXT project this weekend I want to make my own ironing board so it can accomedate a full width of fabric. So I'm going to make one with OSB - Batting - and Canvas. And it can easily sit on top of my cutting station. Space saver AND time saver now that I will be able to iron more cloth at once. :)

Wow.. What a room. How much sq footage to you have in there? I want to make a topper for my fat Rowenta board, but I don't think I have enough room in my room for more then what I have there now.

I love your sewing room and cool idea for your cutting table!

erstan947 08-31-2010 06:11 PM

I'm not sure....it's the entire half of our basement. So I am fortunate to have space to streatch out. Also on the other side is my new toy.

Someday I would LOVE to get an Imperial frame. But for now this setup is great for me, and what I could afford....now I'm eatting ramen noodle for a few mohts until all of my quilting bills are paid off....:)

Michael ... You the man! I love your idea. I wish I had the room to incorporate it into my space. But, if you saw my thread earlier this week, you know that it is way too small for this tip.
The rest of the room is set up nicely too. It looks so functional. I love that!

Quilter7x 08-31-2010 06:54 PM

You're making great use of items and space in your sewing studio Michael. And I love the dark green on the walls! :D

Grammy o'5 08-31-2010 07:05 PM

A very, very nice room, great set-up and all those machines, too!! Love it! I would eat Ramen noodles for awhile too! LOL! :D

Great idea!

NikkiLu 08-31-2010 07:17 PM

You SIT at your long arm machine/frame????? I thought everybody had to stand up at theirs. Learn something new every day!

MrsClaas 08-31-2010 07:18 PM

I purchased an av cart from our school district after we closed 3 elementary buildings. I cut my piece of plywood about 30 x 40. I covered it with batting and then the thermal stuff and covered it with a nice cat print. I attached guides on the bottom so it stays put on the cart. I love it!!! And, I think because it can easily be removed that I will make another in the same fashion for the cutting board. Total cost of wonderful ironing board was about $20.00

Ditter43 08-31-2010 07:21 PM

You have a great work area!!!! :D

My DH and I took a piece of solid door and covered with MDF board put a lazy susan bottom on it...plan to cover with a piece of cutting mat for a rotating mat...will post pics when completed...love the room and batting that is hanging...we have some of those brackets.....going for another do it yourself.
Thanks for the ideas.

What a super area to sew in!

Champagnolle 09-01-2010 04:02 AM

Nice set up. My cutting mat is now on a the top of a heavy cardboard that I have on top of a giant dog kennel. I use the kennel for my meddlesome black and tan coonhound when I have to go out.

Years ago when I didn't need a guest bedroom, I built a couple of frames of plywood and furring strips and put them on casters. The inside, open part held transfer file boxes full of fabric. They had 24 boxes in each framework. I did a lot of sewing on clothing then and could spread out long pieces of fabric for cutting.

Mariposa 09-01-2010 05:16 AM

Great ideas! You have lots of room too! Thanks for sharing~

LOL....you can't see it very well, but there are some curtains at the end of the room. In there are about 8 plastics tubs separated by color. :)

I've left them out of the room until I get my stash tamed....cause everything is just tossed and wadded up in the bins....SO I need to take time get them looking nice and tamed before I add them to the room....I know, I'm CRAZY!

Well I sit there and watch the Qbot! :) I normally have the Golden Girls playing on DVD and just watch to be sure everything.

That setup is really new, I've only done 1 quilt with it so far - and have NEVER free handed....it make me nervous! :P

amandasgramma 09-01-2010 06:01 AM

Michael - I just bought Qbot, too.....but don't be afraid of freehand!!! I used 2 sheets from thrift store and cheap batting and went for it! It's easier than you think!

I love the set-up you have.

Jeanniejo 09-01-2010 06:04 AM

I am soooooooooooo jealous !!!! :

SueDor 09-01-2010 06:05 AM

You're an incredibly handy & crafty man!!! Kudos to you and your awesome ideas! There's nothing wrong with Ramen noodles, I eat them because I like them. I never thought about eating them because I had to,lol!!

wolph33 09-01-2010 08:09 AM

great room to create in

leaha 09-01-2010 08:27 AM

great room and a greaT IDEA for your cutting table. I use the butcher block table I got for my cafe'. I got an undermount dawer for my rottery cutters and small rulers. The large ones are hung on the wall next to the table.

Jim's Gem 09-01-2010 09:46 AM

Your sewing room is gorgeous!! I love the wood of your cabinets. It looks so warm and inviting!!!

Deb watkins 09-01-2010 10:19 AM

You can't possibly be creating and sewing in that room. Where are all the rulers and scraps and threads on the floor? I don't see any ufo's or wip's around. Oh, I know, you made a curtain looking like a sewing room to put in front of the camera......WHAT IS REALLY BEHIND CURTAIN #1???
