I have a question about the applique block on your design wall--the one on the left. Is it from the book "Where the Cold Wind Blows"? I just bought that book and want to make the Love Letters quilt. Your block is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! |

I envy all of y'all with such nice sewing rooms... or really a sewing room period. I'm still just a beginner, and am living in a tiny apartment... so I'm just stuck using the kitchen counter.

This has been a great thread to get ideas. Love seeing everyone's space.

boomwooshblahh...There are many here that are limited on space and have really great ideas to make use of smaller areas. Maybe they will post w/their ideas soon. We've talked about it in chat before. There are many great plastic type of containers and some w/wheels that fit right under your bed. Some have even added lifts on their beds to make them a bit higher to slide bigger containers in storage there. Keeping their fabrics folded, even by color. When they pull out the container, there are all their colors easily at hand. Also, you can use the silverware trays..and, there are fun ones out there made out of wire or plastic. Even individual ones. These can hold all your important cutting tools from rotary cutters to scissors and small rulers. You will find in the quilting breed that we all are...we are savy!! I personally may not have a huge stash of fabric, but, can really stretch what I do have in many ways. Before this room I presently am in, I sewing in a space of about 4x5':0)Which was big enough for me to sew one direction and get up, turn around to cut the next:)Best part of sewing in a kitchen is the ergonomics of our countertops...perfect for our cutting boards to cut our fabric on w/the best height! I bet we hear from more w/savy storage ideas, etc, no matter what the space! All any of us want to do is create:)Skeat

A good cutting area is a drafting table and it fold up. It is a wide table, great for cutting, drawing etc. The height is wonderful.
Just an idea for cutting. I conficated my husbands that he used in college. It is great. |

Here are a few pictures of my sewing room. It also happens to be the family room and the computer room, but as you can see, I have spread my quilting all over the room. I just took these pictures a few minutes ago with no lights on, just the natural light that comes in the sliding glass door.
Cutting table with storage underneath for scraps and fat quarters. My girls will usually come sit by the door if they are outside when I am quilting The quilt hanger (treadmil) with quilts waiting to be quilted The television is not used, not sure if it even works, we've had it for 27 1/2 years. We don't watch tv, just occasional movies on DVD My cabinetss for fabric storage. I um....... have about 12 more 60 quart clear buckets in the garage with a few fabrics in them |

A couple more. We don't use the fire place very often (last time about 5 years ago) this room stores 6 broken chairs that are in need of reconstructing. My quilt books and some of my quilt magazines are the 3 lower shelves on the skinny case My sewing desk has a back piece that comes up to give me a nice big work surface. It also has 3 positions for the sewing machine so I can put the machine all the way down and put a piece that fits in the hole to have a desk top. The door I stare at when sewing is going out to the garage. So When it gets warm in here, I just open the slider and open the garage door and I get a nice air flow, also have a ceiling fan I turn on. If I step about 4 steps into the garage I can get into my extra fabrics. The main computer is in front of the desk just to the left of the garage door. Often times DH is on computer, I'm sewing and DS's girlfriend is on couch and we can talk while we are all there
view across room, back to cabinets. That is a couch right next to the cutting table. Very handy for setting strips or just pressed pieces of fabric on ready to cut. My sewing desk, it has a back piece that comes up to give me a nice big work surface. Fabric cabinets open. My sewing desk, cutting table, chair and fat quarter/scrap storage are all on wheels and so move out of the way very easily. |

I used to do all my sewing on the dining room table and had to clean it up cause we have a small group Bible study here every Tuesday night and need the dining room table for the coffee and snacks and stuff.

Nighttime pic of my sewing space WIPS - Stack of tops ready to be quilted - about 17 of them My design wall with the rest of my WIPs - Fabric storage is in the corner out of the pic - Plus the closet - which has scraps, storage, batting, etc. - doors stay closed :) |
Love seeing everyone's quilt rooms. My DL just bought me the most comfortable glider and footstool at Walmart. I have my TV, wireless laptop, great place to do my sewing, reading and handquilting, what more could a girl need. I do have to come out occasionally for food and water. Our poor pup can't understand he comes in just to see what I am doing and gets his puppy hug and then he is happy and off he goes for an hour and then back to check in on me.
