Without going into sordid details; there's a girl at my work who is pregnant and due July 10th. There isn't a father in the picture, and she's from Ecuador and has very little family here.
I work with one of my 3 sisters and she and I (mostly her! lol) planned and organized a 'baby shower' for her- but we just asked for used clothing, onesies, bottles, etc. for her; she literally had nothing.. not a single thing, for this baby. She didn't even have any maternity clothing.

I got to thinking... Why don't I just make a quilt (isn't that we all think?!)? So another sister and I picked out some fabric and cut and whipped this bad boy together for her in an afternoon (all except the basting/quilting/binding). That sister, Karen, is also on this board- kbiederman. I can't take ALL the credit. :D
On top of making the quilt, I was able to find a beautiful coordinating bumper and bedskirt from Pottery Barn Kids for nearly free... well, together they would have been $160, and with my employee discount, I got them for $20 total. Yikes!! See? Nearly free!!! The bumper also had airplanes on it.

You wouldn't have believed the outpouring of people's love for her! I cried! We had to take 3 car/truckloads to her apartment. She got a crib, mattress, quilt, bumper, bedskirt, highchair, stroller, 2 carseats, diaper bag, diapers, onesies, pjs, bags and bags of clothes, etc etc etc etc... I mean, she is so loaded now! I was just happy to be a part of it... You know- make someone else's day and see how you feel. It's amazing how it puts things in perspective!

Anyway, this isn't the fanciest quilt, but it will keep little baby boy warm in the cold Minnesota nights, and hopefully remind Elsa that we love her and we wish her the best for her little cutie-pie-to-come. :)

I did the quilting in an opposite diagonal of the quilt pattern. What do you think?

My straight lines! lol

Oh! I made a pillow too. :)

Oh what a nice thing for you all to do for this gal! Gives me a shiver...

Maggie_Sue 06-28-2010 06:22 PM

So nice to hear about genuine caring people, quilting on the opposite diagonal was a great idea.

cjomomma 06-28-2010 06:24 PM

That was a fabulous story. You have put tears in my eyes. That was just an incredible thing for you and your sister to do.

JudyG 06-28-2010 06:31 PM

I think it is a bright, beautiful quilt for a baby boy and you and your sister are wonderful people for doing that for her.

IrishNY 06-28-2010 06:42 PM

I am often not proud to be a member of the human race when I hear about the things we do to each other, but I sure feel different after reading your post. I'm sure she was thrilled.

tmg 06-28-2010 06:42 PM

What a nice thing you and your sister did. You will be greatly blessed.

deedles215 06-28-2010 06:48 PM

Ooooo! Thank you thank you thank you! I'm crying again, lolol!!!
I just know people have it in them... it just takes a spark to get a fire going, you know?
We were having doubts about our human race while we were planning the shower.. people can be nasty out of ignorance. But in the end... I just challenge people to be the spark. That's all.
Have a wonderful night and enjoy!

Such a thoughtful thing to do. Wish the girl and her new baby all the best, I sure wouldn't want to be raising a child alone the way the world has gotten.

You and your Sister made a very pretty quilt for this yet to be born Baby and the Mother to be. Good for you two getting the ball rolling, good for the other people that was so giving also. Yes, giving to others that appreciate it is a very good feeling, that is why I give away most of my quilts. I give them to mainly people I know or my Grandaughter knows.

charismah 06-28-2010 07:46 PM

Oh Deedles..that is so nice..I love your quilt and I am glad to hear about the out pouring of LOVE!It is nice to see you on here..it has been awhile!

annieshane 06-28-2010 07:53 PM

Your story gives me goose bumps. The quilt is beautiful, but your heart is even more beautiful. You will probably never know the blessing you have been to this young woman and her baby. She will never forget you, and you will never forget the blessing you received from organizing this. I would bet that when her times are seeming very hard and she feels lonely, she will look at the quilt and all the gifts and remember that tremendous outpouring of love.

There are so many wonderful people in this world. Too bad we most often hear of the horrible, instead of stories like yours.

deedles215 06-28-2010 07:58 PM

Annie, thank you so much. :)

Charisma, I KNOW!! I've been sooo busy... argh. But I hope to be back- for a while at least!

Sweeeeeet :-P

thequilterslink 06-29-2010 04:50 AM

what a wonderful thing to do. Love your quilt!

mom-6 06-29-2010 04:54 AM

Sometimes all it takes is someone like you to get the ball rolling and WOW! the result is incredible. I've found most people are quite willing to do something to help out if they hear of a need, but don't know where to start.
Thanks to you this need was taken care of abundantly beyond what you or the recipient would have dreamed.
And your quilt is just perfect for this new little one.

deeceem 06-29-2010 05:15 AM

Such a warm hug!

aorlflood 06-29-2010 05:25 AM

Wow! Beautiful quilt and a wonderful thing you did for that lady! Blessings to you, your sister and everyone who was involved!

raptureready 06-29-2010 05:29 AM

I love the quilt. How fortunate this young lady is to have friends like you and your sister. That's going to be one lucky little baby.

p.s. the airplane fabric is the very same one that I used to make my husband, the RC plane freak, a quilt a year ago for his b-day.

Elisabrat 06-29-2010 05:53 AM

You have blessed this baby with the generous gift of love. And the mother who has limited family. I think we chose who are families are when we get older and by adding this woman into your lives you have enriched everyones life experience. The blanket is lovely and the gesture even lovelier.

Pineapple Princess 06-29-2010 06:59 AM

I got goosebumps on my arms when I was reading your story. You and your sister cared enough to do this for her and her baby. So nice. Then so many others cared as well and were so generous. What a blessing.
I really like the quilt. It is just perfect. /Regards, Dorothy
