Just Keep Going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 Attachment(s)
I am posting these pictures to hopefully inspire others who are much too critical of themselves and quit too soon. I thoroughly enjoyed putting this quilt together for my brother, in what I considered a masculine theme. I didn't have a pattern but saw it on a wall in a local quilt shop.

It wasn't until I started to quilt it on my frame that I realized each and every block was slightly different as far as how I cut it to square. I have a robotic feature on my long arm Innova and wanted to use it. That's when I saw that my blocks were not as identical as I wanted them to be. Next, I picked a beautiful pattern but after an entire row decided it was much too dense. Oh well, sit and rip out thousands of stitches, No, I think not, just keep going.

The more I kept going the more unhappy I was but at this point decided it was "just get it over with". When I finally got to the bottom border it was so crooked I just wanted to cry BUT "just keep doing it". I took it off the frame and marked the final border and quilted it on my DSM. It was sooooo heavy to move around. I always take pictures of my quilts before I give them away or use them but didn't with this one.

UNTIL I PUT IT ON HIS BED! Unless you were the quilt police and inspected this up close and personal you would not notice all that I've complained about. I know the men on horseback will think it's wonderful.

Point to all this is Don't give up, be forgiving and just keep going. He loves it and now so do I, It was my lesson in humility. I still have so much to learn.

It looks wonderful on the bed and he loves it! A win, win in my opinion no matter how much trouble it gave you.

MamaBear61 02-28-2014 09:03 AM

The quilt looks wonderful and you are so right about us being too fussy about things that non-quilters would never even see. Not all quilts are ready to be judged but that does not make them any less lovable.

Barb_MO 02-28-2014 09:03 AM

I love it! You did a wonderful job. Wish you had the pattern so you could share it. I want to make one just like it!. Hope someone on the board know if it is available.

pocoellie 02-28-2014 09:04 AM

Regardless of the problems you had with it, it's beautiful!! Thanks for inspiring us to not "sweat the small things".

PaperPrincess 02-28-2014 09:25 AM

Looks wonderful! Hope he appreciates all your hard work!
I know what you mean about being over critical of our own work. I'll be quilting away, then think to myself I'll have to take that out later. When I go to take it out, I can't even find the 'error'!

Gorgeous and unique! I love the colors!

nanacc 02-28-2014 09:41 AM

I have no galloping horse and I think it is great!! Unique pattern and I love the fabrics.

quiltjoey 02-28-2014 09:49 AM

You did a great job! Your blocks look "square on" to me. I, too, have kept on going on a couple of quilts that took years and I'm glad I did as I am sure you are also! Well done.

dunster 02-28-2014 10:24 AM

Beautiful quilt, the colors just flow in such a nice pattern. The quilting, what I could see, looks great too.

I'm interested in what type of robotics you have on your Innova. I'm considering that addition but haven't done enough research on what's available.

Mariposa 02-28-2014 11:11 AM

Great job on your wonderful quilt! Yes, we are our own worst critics~~

feline fanatic 02-28-2014 11:30 AM

It is gorgeous. I especially love how you left that small strip of curve un quilted.

QuiltnNan 02-28-2014 12:32 PM

nicely done

KimS 02-28-2014 12:42 PM

I like it! We're our own worst critics. I've ripped out so many stitches because they looked off but then took on the attitude like you did...just keep going. I think it turned out wonderfully!!! :)

Pollytink 02-28-2014 12:48 PM

I love it! basically large HST's, right? What did you use to get the curve cut in the block? There was one with smaller hst's similar to this that I saved to maybe try. Did you use a special ruler?

quiltstringz 02-28-2014 12:57 PM

I think it is wonderful. I love the quilt and the quilting

toverly 02-28-2014 01:09 PM

Terrific job! I know he loves it. It is the perfect pattern and fabrics for a guy.

QUILTNMO 02-28-2014 01:52 PM

Your quilt is wonderful, he'll love it!

I almost never really like a quilt I'm into making until it's been bound and washed when completely finished. :)

LindaMRB 02-28-2014 02:06 PM

Good for you! I like the colors and I like the curved lines! It's really quite handsome. So glad you kept going.

JoAnn Flynn 02-28-2014 02:17 PM

I think it's beautiful, I would be proud to own it and I'm not even Male!!!!

Zinda 02-28-2014 02:36 PM

Wonderful quilt. I love the fabrics and color. Don't be so critical of yourself. I know - easier said than done!

Jackie Spencer 02-28-2014 02:59 PM

SheriR 02-28-2014 08:40 PM

Yes! Fabulous! I see nothing bad from my horse. It's perfect and beautiful. Very manly!

JuneBillie 02-28-2014 09:19 PM

Before I even read your story I thought what a beautiful quilt. I am glad you finished it, and shared it with us. I love all those rich colors, and all the movement in the quilt.

starshine 02-28-2014 09:25 PM

Your quilt looks great. Very nice work.

earthwalker 02-28-2014 09:35 PM

Looks fantastic....and finished (which is the important bit). Thanks for sharing your journey with this quilt, it is very helpful to those of us who become crippled by fear of failure.

cathyvv 02-28-2014 09:48 PM

That is a very striking quilt! I bet your brother loves it, too. The fabric choices are wonderful; they make the quilt look very warm and inviting and add a rich tone to the room.

My husband inadvertantly gifted me with the right perspective on the actual quilting of a quilt. He told me that before I started quilting, he never noticed the quilting on a quilt.

cindy4857 02-28-2014 10:12 PM

Looks like it was made for that room and that bed. Well done. I'm sure he will show it off and will continue to love it till you make him another one.

quiltsRfun 02-28-2014 10:52 PM

That's a good lesson for all of us. And your quilt is gorgeous.

audsgirl 02-28-2014 11:38 PM

It looks great! It is a nice manly design, and the fabrics you picked are terrific, too. I'm sure he loves it.

Let me clarify, I'm pretty good about squaring up my blocks. The error is that each time I didn't take note as to where the point would wind up. Some were dead on the point, others here, there everywhere. Took great care of the measurements but not of the location.
