Two quilts are what I would do. I think I agree with you on those larger pieces on the outside, I would personally try to mix it up more or cut them smaller or something. But, it would look great left as is too!!!
Great job!!!

Izy 05-11-2009 10:27 PM

Just mulling over the endless possibilities Quiltcrazy!! :D

My original plans was to add applique on the big blocks, BUT it WAS supposed to be a quick fix.....(in answer to Sandpat...yep I was expecting too much as usual  ) lol!!

I might Just cut the big border edges off like Jimsgem suggested and reuse them to make a more scrappy border...or am I just complicating things as usual, I might just get it layered up and get cracking on the quilting, and call in DONE   :D

Well afterall....I have hundreds of ideas for new projects and I must get started on my sons wedding quilt SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!! :D

Barb M 05-12-2009 12:47 AM

I have the answer for you lol :) Love your quilts, that's quilts with an S lol, so yup, two quilts it is. Know what i would do with the first quilt? Don't take the big border off. Instead, use your rotary cutter, and cut each of the lengths and widths of the border in half. Then re-sew the strips back on, just put them on opposite sides of the quilt that they came from, to mix the colours up a bit :)

I don't know what Izy thinks, Barb, but I think that's GENIUS! :D

Great idea Barb!!!

gcathie 05-12-2009 04:06 AM

Sounds like you've got a lot of grand ideas and knowing you ....you have something in mind .....:-).....they look realy great and a good use of fabric.....:-)......good luck figuring out what to do next.......:-)

Izy 05-12-2009 04:39 AM

Oh Barb...you are such a quick fixer, I love your ideas!! :D

I have been to the quilting class today and asked a few opinions there too, so now I have even more ideas to mull over tee hee!!

Think this is was I will do...

1. Chop the outside border down the middle
2. Add a small plain border (No idea what just yet, will have to see what I have got left.)
3. Chop up the remaining half border width ways and make a scrappy piano style border about 3" wide using up some of the scraps left over and the fabric for the binding I reserved.
4. Add binding to match thin border.

Now does that sound like a decent plan? :D

ambquilter 05-12-2009 06:14 AM

Did I overlook it? Where did you get the pattern for the second quilt?

I didn't use a pattern Angie, I just roughly cut up the scraps I had then just started in the middle with a square (ish) piece and worked my way around like a log cabin, when I got it to roughly 10/12" across, I added 4 rough cut triangles of fabric, then squared the block with a 12.5" square ruler, then added 3/4" navy polka dot sashing to each block. The borders are made from all the leftover scraps, just stitched them all together and cut them at 2.5" joined them up and made up the quilt top as usual. I didn't have enough scraps to go around the outside edge, so added the tone on tone beige, which I think frames it better anyway

Very nice no wonder you got a go on your quilting. I recieved Sandpats IRR today and it is simply gorgeous.

I'm all for the idea JoanneS suggested. Break out the long rulers and start cutting and playing. Make it your own. This way you get to release that inner artist that is just begging to take someone else's idea and make it your own.
And even if you don't cut this one up, they both deserve to be their own quilt. After your 6 week rest you came up with two. You seem to be on a roll and back in the quilting scheme of things.
Just have fun, is my thought.

ambquilter 05-12-2009 09:54 AM

Thanks for your help. I love how framing the blocks make them stand out. Also, the scrappy sashing is perfect.

Izy, you have pinned me to a T lol. I don't rip out any seams, too much work lol. Love your idea! Slicing the border down smaller, and adding a solid border, then your scraps, awesome! :)

sandpat 05-12-2009 03:38 PM

Izy...sounds like you are on a roll now! I like your plan and am waiting to see new pics.

I'm sure Elle has Colin trained perfectly...why else would she waste time marrying him if she didn't???

Barb, it's funny to hear the variations in 'sayings'... we tend to say 'You got me down to a T'!!!!!!!!!!! BUT I get what you mean

I got one of the lengths of piano keys done last night, and am itching to get the rest done today, so might have pictures later today Patti

Butterflyspain 05-12-2009 11:57 PM

I am sure you have a jet engine on that sewing machine of yours :D

To think you had never had a sewing machine until fairly recently, you are certainly ace on it now hun :D

Have to admit, it must be in shock after laying dormant for six weeks or so......and the dust and fluff on it is terrible...just noticed last night  Definitely neglected it, when I finish this top I will give it some TLC

quilter1962 05-13-2009 01:51 AM

Izy

Great to see you back here - I've not been around much lately so have just caught up with your thread. WOW - I love both of your tops/bottoms !!!
I think two separate quilts would be perfect & Barbs idea ofs slicing through the last border on the big block top is a brilliant idea.
Looking forward to seeing it completed.

Tisha

Izy 05-13-2009 01:55 AM

Thanks Tisha,

NOt been around much myself, but got back into sewing last week as you see, it won't be long (if I get my butt off this chair) til I finish the last border on the big block then will post another couple of pictures :D

sandpat 05-13-2009 03:43 AM

OK Izy.....my foot is atappin' and I'm waiting for those new pics!!!

Izy 05-13-2009 05:06 AM

THEN I just had to come see what was going on here....so distracted again lol!!

Going to get some done right now!! :D

Very nice Izy, love those borders, that was a great idea

Been out shopping for the IRR border I have to do to Sandpats, gosh its lovely, wait till you see it next week. Took it to the fabric shop with me where they had a patchwork session going on with all Spanish ladies, they went gah gah over it, was considered preciosa.
Sorry for the hijack.

Izy that's turned out great! I love the piano keys - finishes it off with a flourish! And the big blocks are ideal for showcasing those WONDERFUL fabrics!

I LOVE lemon curd, and I haven't had any since my last visit to London in '96. Please send a recipe! For the American gals who don't know what it is, it's like the best lemon meringe pie you ever tasted WITHOUT the crust and meringe!

JoanneS 05-13-2009 09:52 AM

Izy - great decision! And now you have lots of room for great quilting. Looking forward to seeing how you finish BOTH of these cheerful quilts!

JoanneS 05-13-2009 09:53 AM

Elle - please post a picture of the IRR - or tell me whaere the thread is. I accidentally find it once in a while, but I can never remember how to get back!
I'm sorry, too, Izy for also hijacking your thread.

mgshaw 05-13-2009 09:56 AM

Oh WOW Izy!!!!!! I love it!!
It looks like a completely different quilt!!!
