Your quilt is just gorgeous. I love your colors!! The border is a great idea. You have made me want to buy some more flannel. Quite a few years ago I made several rag quilts for Christmas presents. My leftovers went to a cat quilt cut into 4 inch squares. It took as long to cut a 3x3 foot quilt as a larger one. My cats really love the quilt, so every snip was worth it.

I'm thinking of making 2 rag quilts for single beds. Did you quilt this yourself? That would be the one thing I'm worried about doing ...

Question. Really new at this so please bare with me. Do you quilt your squares before you so them together?

yes, you layer your two fabric squares with your batting in between, then you sew an "x".

What are rag scissors? Do you just mean the spring loaded kind or is there some special scissors to make cutting those edges easier? I love the look but cannot do the clipping.

they are scissors made for rag quilting. they have a short stubby blade. i sit and do a little at a time. it actually goes faster than you would think.

you don't actually quilt this as in the traditional way. your sewing your two squares with a batting square in the middle. then your sewing all the squares together. so it's kinda like your "quilting" it as you go

i think i might have to put together a tutorial with pictures...:)...that might be alot easier for everyone. or at least a information sheet with all the tips.

I love Your quilt!!! The colors are beautiful. Did you do this in flannel or cotton? Your squares are they 4x4? It is really a very nice quilt. I would love to make one.

I made 6 (yes, 6) rag quilts for my grandkids for Christmas. Instead of squares, I made them in different size strips. I have pictures, but don't know how to get them from the camera to the post. :( Your is so beautiful. I think the colors are striking. Thanks for posting.

Strips! Sounds like something different. What are the demensions of the strips you used?

grammy of 6 02-11-2012 04:10 PM

I alternated 5" and 6" strips. So the finished strips ended up being 4" and 5". Instead of using X's that you would use for blocks, I sewed lines down each strip. I sewed 1 line down the 5" strips, and 2 lines down the 6" strips. I will try to post some pictures because this is about as clear as mud. :(.
