Absolutely beautiful. I went to a talk given by Nancy Chong of Pacific Rim Quilt Company. She said that there is no such thing as reverse applique. I think she is right, because you are always putting one fabric on top and turning the edges under (for needle turn) or stitching it down around the edges. However when people talk about reverse applique it's usually because the fabric on bottom is the one that forms the design, rather than the fabric on top.

I took a hand applique class in which we made block after block of just hearts, but we used different techniques. If the "heart" fabric was on the bottom (so we were turning under the edges of the background fabric), we were doing reverse applique; if it was on top, it was not reverse applique. I think that's the definition most people use.

". . . . . on my Hawaiian quilts but they can also be done by machine."

Fancifrock, please explain how you do needleturn on the machine or did I misunderstand your method.

Nanna, your applique is very very, nice. I can see you embellished the flower petal and it looks great. Thanks for sharing.

I admire your persistence ! At least each block is different which would keep my interest, but your skills FAR outweigh mine in applique. This will be some heirloom for someone special, hopefully you!

It feels like I've been a mad woman working on this block. It's #13 of the 40 needed for this quilt. The name is appliqued feather. The space to cut and turn under was so small that I had to take even teenier stitches than usual. And, as always, my block isn't exact to the book. I take designing liberties with what I do. The feathers were stitched in reverse applique method. I think that's the same technique used on Hawaiian quilts. Someone out there will know and tell me if I'm wrong. Please do.

Okay, this quilt is Little Brown Bird by Margaret Docherty. I have completed other blocks and they are posted in my album here on QB. If you have any questions, just ask and, thanks for looking.

Your block is beautiful!
