I ran across this on Etsy and absolutely love it - especially if the center block had a fussy cut square :)

Is this a log cabin?

DebraK 01-22-2011 06:51 PM

I would say no, but I love it.

CoriAmD 01-22-2011 06:52 PM

Looks to me like a variation of the log cabin.... Love this quilt! You are very lucky to have found it.

fleurdelisquilts.com 01-22-2011 06:52 PM

I agree.....it's not. Very cute block though.

scowlkat 01-22-2011 06:52 PM

I don't think so but it is pretty.

Bluebonnet Sue 01-22-2011 06:55 PM

That's a great block, but I need to see the back to see how it is constructed. Not a log cabin.

Ms Grace 01-22-2011 06:57 PM

I would love to find the pattern for this one! :)

leatheflea 01-22-2011 06:59 PM

Nope but I like it too!

Prism99 01-22-2011 07:04 PM

I would say no also.

Do you see how it is made? You assemble two strips with a shorter cross-strip at the end; make 4 of those. Then sew them on to the center square as if you were making a log-cabin. Only thing is you have one extra short seam to sew at the end.

Clever. Think I will bookmark this one.

Edit: Actually, you would have to sew each component to one side of the square first, then go around and finish the 4 seams. Still would be easy to do!

gzuslivz 01-22-2011 07:09 PM

I agree that it's not a log cabin. But it sounds like Prism99 has figured out how to make it. Maybe she will post a tutorial for the rest of us? Hint Hint!

LindaM 01-22-2011 07:09 PM

That *is* pretty!

It's done using partial seams.

Here are some graphics on how to do this:

Well, I have to master posting digital photos first. Just got my camera today! (20yo dd has hogged the family camera for years. Finally bought my own and am going to keep it hidden when not in use so she doesn't know we have another camera.....)

LivelyLady 01-22-2011 07:12 PM

Very pretty, but I wouldn't say it was a log cabin.

LovinMySoldier 01-22-2011 07:14 PM

Wow I love it! Really cute. Looks like it wouldn't be too hard to wing it on the pattern.

Jingle 01-22-2011 07:18 PM

It could be a variation of the log cabin quilt, I have a book that has lots of variations.
It is a pretty block, whatever it is.

seymoore 01-22-2011 07:25 PM

I think it's a variation of a rail fence, just has a square in the middle instead.

I was thinking it looked like a fence/rail variation too :)

kriscraft99 01-22-2011 07:35 PM

oh I'm hoping Prism99 will post a tutorial or somebody will find a pattern. I need step by step - I can't wing anything yet.

it is pretty

pittsburgpam 01-22-2011 10:49 PM

That's really cute! It looks like it would need one partial seam.

I'm making some blocks for the border on my Giant Dahlia and I sewed all the strips together to cut into strips of squares then changed my mind about the block I wanted to do. I found that in order to use what I had already sewn I had to do a partial seam.

It turned out well though. The center of the block is white and I'm pressing all 4 sides outwards and it gives it a really nice look.

Technically probably not, but creative wise, I would say yes.

kriscraft99 01-23-2011 10:37 AM

if anyone finds a link to an online pattern, please let me know :)

Have you thought about asking the seller what the name of the pattern is? :)

kriscraft99 01-23-2011 07:26 PM

I did and I have - but no response from the seller yet. I've looked and looked at the block but have no idea how to put it together.

Well looks like someone found a link for the pattern. Here is what I came up with though. Just winged it. turned out 8 inch. Pretty easy

This one could be done without partial seams.

LOL mine wasn't the same as the pic. I should have done a bit shorter strips and wider. Someone said it could be done without the partial seam. I'm not sure how. That's what I used.

I spoke too soon. I thought you could piece this without a partial seam. But after studying it, I was wrong. Oh, well. Nice thought. Sorry if I got any of you excited at the prospect:-(

gaigai 01-25-2011 10:14 AM

It's pretty, but I am anaphylactic allergic to set-in seams. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! LOL

I found the pattern for sale on eTsy:

I was hoping to find a tutorial for free but I may have to break down and buy the pattern
