I don't have a pattern, but an easy way to do this is using HST. Try sketching in out on graph paper.

Here's another site

Quilter's cache has a pattern but for a small one. It is also called a broken star and I think Judith Krentz has a patter tut for it.

nativetexan 05-13-2011 12:17 PM

I would make it with half square triangles. the size of them dictates the size of the quilt. but there are lots of free patterns out there too.

msjenny 05-13-2011 12:18 PM

Thank you so much. You guys are great, I got 2 responses in less than 10 min. Now I can start making plans! ..Jenny

so make this quilt out of squares ans HST. Pretty simple. Just look at the quilt and go from there. Don't think you really need a pattern for it. Cut your squares the size you want and the cut the HST squares 7/8 of an inch bigger, draw a diagonal line down the middle and sew 1?4" on each side of the diagonal, cut in half and viola! you have your HST, then square up the squares and piece em together.

That is a beautiful quilt.
I'd love one for my queen size bed.
Wonder what size squares I would need to do???

bj 05-13-2011 12:27 PM

As you can see from my avatar, I love this layout. You can go bigger just by adding extra rounds. Very easy to do. :-D

Crafty bear is absolutely correct. The version she sent you is made from half square triangles. SOOOOO much easier than making it with diamonds. (No set in or Y seams required)

Rose L 05-13-2011 12:44 PM

It looks like easy construction. Wow! Isn't that quilting just perfect on it?!!

The quilt center is a 8 blocks x 8 blocks. Plus two borders that together equal the size of a block, making it a 10 x 10 layout. Ten inch blocks ought to do it. Then a 2 inch finished border and an 8 inch finished border. That would get you a 100x100 quilt.

Carpenter's Wheel is the name of the quilt. It's all squares and HSTs.

I want to try your avatar someday. Do you still have the yardage requirements for it by any chance? And did you make it with HST's? Thanks!!!!

Mizgoodie 05-14-2011 05:43 AM

Look in the tutitorials. You will find it there.

I know it is the Carpenter's square but don't have instructions. The quilt is beautiful and whoever did the quilting did a great job.

I did make it with hst's and squares. I don't have the yardage. I just charted it out on graph paper and figured how many of each combo I needed. I had a yard or so of each color and 2 yards of the green. But I had fabric left over. It is a baby quilt, so didn't take a lot.

Fergie 05-14-2011 07:55 AM

Wonderful idea/quilt. I have a grandson that wants a hunter green/tan quilt and this would be perfect. I love HST and the lady is correct: just follow the placement. Happy Squares Fergie

Sheree from Chicago 05-14-2011 08:24 AM

What a gorgeous quilt! Who did the quilting?

jamannix 05-14-2011 08:28 AM

Quilter's Cache lists it under "Carpenter's Wheel" and not Carpenter's Star,
as most other sites refer to it. - Judy

MaggieMeg 05-14-2011 08:57 AM

I printed out the pattern instructions for the Carpenters Wheel and the Hunter Star some time back. I look at these two patterns every day wanting to make them. I have only made two quilts so far, and I have a couple of other quilts that I need to do for others first. But when I can do one that I choose, I will make the Carpenter's Wheel pattern. I think the Hunter's Star may be more difficult to make, so I will wait till I have a little experience under my belt before I tackle that one. But I so look forward to it. Good luck with the Carpenters Wheel Pattern. I am sure it will be lovely. I can hardly wait to make one myself.
