Meet Rufus the Red

Meet Rufus the Red. This is my daughter’s dog and I told her I would make her a quiltfeaturing Rufus for her birthday.
I’m really enjoyinglearning the ‘collage’ technique! Using up scraps is wonderful (I have sew manyof them)! I put a layer of tulle (is that spelled right?) over Rufus to keepfraying to a minimum and have mixed feelings about it. It made the black background all shimmery(the tulle is a dark green) but it had very little effect on Rufus. I also had some issues with quilting black onblack because I couldn’t really tell where I had been and where I was going! All in all this quilt was a good learning experience. |
Fantastic portrayal! What a wonderful birthday present. Your daughter will treasure it I'm sure.
great job!
Very cute and the green reading glasses add a nice touch!
Adorable! I see that Rufus is a reader. He should be reading "A Dog's Purpose". :)
You did a fantastic job of capturing Rufus on fabric. You daughter will absolutely love that quilt.
Oh I'm in love!! Both with the quilt and the pup! Amazing job!
Love your portrait of Rufus!!! My son had a dog with one ear down and one up!! Was his companion for many years! It’s on my bucket list to create a quilt for him and his dog who had passed away and came home to the ranch for burial! After seeing yours I’m excited to do something similar!! Great job!!

Very nice and such wonderful workmanship. I am sure your daughter will treasure your work.

Love the quilt. What book or source are you using to learn this method. I am working on a project now(kit) that requires a lot of cut up flowers using steam-a-seam. I to am wondering about what to do and tulle was one of my considerations, but it isn't mentioned as a requirement. I have quite a lot of flowers to stitch down and am concerned about missing some and how this is going to hold up in the future. Any hints about the tulle would be appreciated.

She will love it, very nice

You captured him for sure. Love it!
Wow, you really captured the essence of the pooch! Both are wonderful!!!!!!!!!
That is just wonderful! You are very talented. Collage is definitely a technique I would like to try and is on my to do list!
Rufus is a real winner... both the real pup and the quilt! You captured him perfectly; even got his expression. The book and the glasses just fit in! Wonderful job!
The ears on both are adorable! :) |
...and one of my favorite books, too! When I was a teenager, I worked at a bank where Madeleine L'Engle was a customer. I would see her checks coming thru the office where I worked, but I never saw her because my work area did not have a view of any of the customer areas. But one of my co-workers heard me say that I liked her books. My co-worker put in a good word with the tellers, and every time Ms. L'Engle came thru the drive-thru someone would give me the heads up! I would run up the stairs, scuttle down a hallway, and discretely peek around a corner....unfortunately I never saw anything but the back of her car, driving away. Sigh!
Wow, that's a great portrait. Good work!
You have certainly "captured" Rufus. Beautiful work.
Rufus is so special. What a wonderful gift you have created.

You did a terrific job. I like that. I'm not sure I have the gumption to just right in and try something like that but it so realllllly cute.

That's fantastic!

Amazing job!
Just GREAT. Lucky girl!
This is THE MOST ADORABLE thing I've ever seen! The quilt melted my heart, and then I saw the photograph! You did a wonderful job!
Is he 'Rufus the Red', or 'Rufus the Well-Read'? :D
Great quilt. Your daughter is sure to love it. |
What a great collage quilt representation of the dog! You really did nail it. I have been watching some of Susan Carlson's videos and although she makes this method look "easy", I just can't wrap my mind around how you pick out and cut the fabrics and then you can get it all to look like your subject. Well, you did it all perfectly! I would love to do my dog(s) but will need to do more research or take a class, I think.
Love this!! I need to try this!!! Looks like so much fun!!
Really great job on getting Rufus captured on a quilt. It is amazing love your quilting too.
Love your Rufus!
