I was supposed to make my first quilt for DH as a thank you for insisting I buy my LA. I ended up making it for his cousin's wife who had terminal cancer. So this my second. I planned to do an elaborate design for a beginner but when I showed it to him he said he didn't want any of that frilly stuff. I asked "what frilly stuff?" and he said "those triangles and squares." Then he proceeded to describe a panel with borders around it and just straight lines for the quilting. Since the panels are in a square I had to adapt the design to make a rectangle as it is for his bunk on his semi. I thought crosshatching would be great until I attempted it. There are so many mistakes. Thank you to the person on a previous post who puts rubber cement on her ruler. You saved my sanity. When in the middle, he informs me that he just wanted horizontal lines across it. How boring is that? These pictures are as it came off the LA. I still have some ripping out to do. I will post a finished picture with the matching pillow cases when I finish. I'm not proud of this, my second quilt but accept it as a learning tool. DH loves it though.

After living in a semi for 12 years....this quilt is perfect. I found the light and white is hopeless there. This is a very manly quilt and you have done a great job!

moonwork42029 07-05-2011 06:34 AM

I think it looks great! Glad he was interested in what you were doing and about he LA

debcavan 07-05-2011 06:36 AM

The quilt is gorgeous. Good for him. He got what he would enjoy.

For a new longarmer you are going a little fast. Get use to handling that big baby, just doing simpler things and then get fancy. Get your muscles trained in. The fancy will turn out better with a little experience on your machine.

This is the second quilt I pieced but the 7th I've quilted. I try to do a different technique on each one to learn. I admit that this one was over my head, lesson learned.

Very nice looking quilt. Great job and if hubby likes it that is all that matters.

RenaB 07-05-2011 06:43 AM

I like it and I agree, if he likes it, that is all that matters! Well done!!

Selena 07-05-2011 06:51 AM

Now you know kind of how yours will look and what you might want to change. I like the fabric myself.

It's great!

feline fanatic 07-05-2011 06:56 AM

I like how you mimiced the fabric with your quilting, like the grass and a tighter meander in the leaves. I would definitely invest in more colors of thread though. You would be surprised how much a difference in thread color can make. Less contrast hides mistakes ALOT  Also sometimes you just want the texture visible not the actual quilting stitches themselves.

Awesome quilt! It is wonderful that DH had a part in the design too :D:D:D

Toto's Mom 07-05-2011 08:28 AM

I have those panels, too, and hadn't decided what to do with them.
Both of these quilts are very nice!!! Thanks for sharing them!

charismah 07-05-2011 08:49 AM

Great job! Crosshatching isn't all that easy on a long arm...SO considering it is your first quilt with crosshatching...you did a wonderful job! People don't realize how hard it is!

Your Dh loves it....

blueangel 07-05-2011 08:53 AM

quiltsRfun 07-05-2011 10:02 AM

It's a perfect "man quilt." He did a great job with the design and you did a great job with the rest. :)

soniboo 07-05-2011 10:02 AM

You did good, nice quilt!

Selena 07-05-2011 10:23 AM

Thank you so much. I found feathers to be easy but crosshatching was the hardest thing I've ever tried to do.

If he's happy...that's what counts. Looks good and will keep him warm when you aren't together.

Selena 07-05-2011 11:59 AM

Don't be hard on yourself!! This is truly a learning tool...the longarm is a tool that takes a long time to get really good at. Practice, practice, practice!! I only have a short arm and I am still practicing different stitches after 4 years!!! :-) Be patient! You'll get there. This one looks good....and don't mind about the picking out...everyone does their share of that chore!

dunster 07-05-2011 12:48 PM

Sometimes it's harder to make a quilt to someone else's specifications, but you did a fantastic job.

CajunQuilter2 07-05-2011 01:07 PM

wonderful job. have tons of fun on your la

bjnicholson 07-05-2011 01:17 PM

I love your "manly" quilt. My son is waiting for his "fishy" quilt! And, it's true that it's hard for a girl quilter to get the manly thing right. We're just not of the same wave-length!

Edited to add: ...or on the same planet sometimes!

VernaL 07-05-2011 04:17 PM

You did a beautiful job on this quilt. The quilting looks really good.
Mostly I quilt, but I do make short sleeved shirts for my husband. He is a fisherman and if I see a fish fabric, I will ask him if he likes it for a shirt. He only likes drab (my opinion) fabrics. So I miss making shirts in bright colors, but he does love the ones I make him that are sort of drab. So some of us have to make a sacrifice, but it is always worth it.

alikat110 07-05-2011 04:37 PM

Juliebelle 07-06-2011 03:18 AM

quiltymom 07-06-2011 03:20 AM

very nice!!!manly!!!

emsgranny 07-06-2011 03:44 AM

Man - I love the quilting expecially on the panel. I kinda like the white since it picks up the other whites in fabrics - but what do I know - I too have alot to learn lol

This quilt will be very special for years to come especially since you worked on it together!!! I say great job!!!
