Born May 22, 1923 in Elizabeth NJ. Works beautifully...I just need to get the hang of it....Looks gorgeous!! The decals/painting is almost perfect. Found this on craigslist... The man selling it gave me and my hubby lessons, showing us what we needed to do to keep it operating smoothly for many more years to come.
A beautiful addition to "my sewing space" :
Now to find time to learn the rhythm of the treadle and not go backwards....not as easy as it seems..

Charlee 06-18-2011 10:21 AM

Beautiful!! And I love the way you worded that... "my FIRST treadle"! :)

blueangel 06-18-2011 10:22 AM

Nanamoms 06-18-2011 10:31 AM

Gorgeous...looks pristine. And to have "private lessons" on how to use/take care of it!

Mariposa 06-18-2011 10:34 AM

Wow! Gorgeous machine!!

sylviak 06-18-2011 10:54 AM

That's a beauty! I have my DMIL's treadle in storage that I need to clean up, but it is a lot more worn than that one. Yours is near perfect!! Enjoy!

irishrose 06-18-2011 11:07 AM

Beautiful decals and very good condition. Is the plate on the right side copper? That makes it special.

cedarvalleyquilts 06-18-2011 11:11 AM

It certainly looks to be copper....why is that special?

Learned how to sew onm one of those. Belonged to my Granny. Would give anything to have it now, but when we moved form MI to FL in 64, we just left it in the basement. Momma said we didn't have room for it in the trailer and it was so old anyway. 20-20 hindsight!

Both my Grandmother and Aunt on my Mom's side used a treadle right up thru the 1960's....I have no idea what happened to both those machines....I was so lucky to find such a nice one.

jrharry 06-18-2011 07:23 PM

Congrats! This is really nice!

irishrose 06-18-2011 08:49 PM

The vintage site is collecting birthdates of machines with a copper plate. I'm not sure why. Why don't you post her there. Type "vintage sit" in the search box and just 'reply'.

amma 06-18-2011 09:05 PM

She is gorgeous! :D:D:D

bisseau 06-19-2011 06:09 AM

Can anyone tell me the significance of the copper plate on right side of machine and the birthdate of treadle.....someone said it made it special but I can't find anything on this. Thanks everyone.

I learned to sew on a treadle oh so many years ago - I'd forgotten it went backwards!!!!

quilt addict 06-19-2011 06:43 AM

Absolutely stunning! Glad you are looking forward to using and keeping that beauty doing what she was meant for. You will love it.

Wondering if you could go back to the man and find more
history on your machine.....how it came to him and the
previous owner(s) and other information ,mabe even names
of previous owners (if any). Be a nice history to have for
yourself and others. Just thinking out of the box here.

Great idea! Thanks.

DebbyT 06-19-2011 08:08 AM

This is the freshest looking treadle I have see yet. It was well taken care of. --- The only way I could keep from going backwards half the time was to pull the hand wheel forward for a kick start. Otherwise it was a 50/50 chance of going backwards. Unfortunatly the older machines didn't have needle up/down options so it simply starts where it left off. Our feet seem to start the same way each time. enjoy your machine. It will be quite reliable.
